“Meal with a Friend”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 8, 2014

Went for a meal on the Saturday night of the Grand Prix. Was expecting it to be very busy but less than half the tables taken. The food was great, well prepared generous portions and well priced. Service was a little slow but given we were expecting it to be heaving was a relief however given it was not that busy things could have gone a little faster.

“old fashioned pub with good food”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 22, 2014

We met up for a Sunday lunch and a natter and this was the perfect spot to do this. The menu is not long, but there are enough traditional 'pub grub' things on it to suit most tastes. I was a bit surprised not to find a traditional roast on Sunday, however. The pate was tasty and there was enough bread for it. The accompanying salad was fresh and had some interesting ingredients including blueberries. The chips with the main course were crispy and light (and not a skin in sight!) The steak was a little pricy, but the other items were value for money - lots of ham and two eggs, for example. The main bugbear, and what stopped me giving the extra green blob, was the 'pie'. It is NOT a pie, it is a cobbler. It is basically stew with a bit of puff pasty dumped on top. A pie is surrounded by pastry. The chicken one today was runny and bland. Such a shame, as this let down otherwise good food. The cheesecake was yummy (bit too small a portion!). The service seemed a little chaotic, but friendly nevertheless. We wanted to sit and chat over a leisurely lunch and this is good place to do it. The tables are not too close together, and thankfully, no music or television. Would recommend to anyone looking for a quiet place to meet up with friends and family.

“Great Family Evening Meal”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 28, 2014

My family organised a fantastic meal to celebrate my 60th Birthday at this local Public House. I was very impressed by the high quality of the food that they offered my party of 25 Adults & children - the menu consisted of 3 large Fish Platers with various whole fish including Sea Bream
& other white fish, plus Lobster / Langoustine / Clams / muscles along with Samphire / Salad & chips, this was also accompanied with a 3 meat roast of Local Lamb / Pork & Chicken with a good selection of seasonal roasted vegetables and all of this was followed by a very good selection of Cheeses & biscuits afterwards for those who still needed more to eat. All was washed down with excellent Real Ale & Red Wine. I would recommend this as a good place to eat as they offer a variety meals from the Pub lunch through to the special event and I will be eating there again.

“Excellent food in a perfect English country pub.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 6, 2014

We reserved a table after reading the reviews and were glad we did. I had fish cakes, my husband and son had pies and my daughter had a child's size fish and chips. All our meals were very tasty and well cooked. Pub staff were very friendly and helpful. We will be back!

“An unexpected pleasure”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 3, 2014

Having taken a spur of the moment decision to divert off the motorway and call unexpectedly on old friends we had not seen for fourteen years we adjourned to the pub in the village for a quick drink.
There was a warm welcome from the staff and after enjoying a pint of Old Hooky we decided that we would have a bite to eat.
There were some tempting fish specials on the board along with the standard menu plus a Friday night sizzler menu which had some tempting treats (surf & Turf, Mixed grill plus a Monster feast)
The surf and turf consisted of steak and scampi with fries and onion rings - the steak was cooked to perfection (rare for me) tender and full of flavour, real quality ingredients and for £15 absolutely great value for money. In fact the steak was so good it was almost a shame to have added the scampi (also very tasty) as the quality of steak was a real winner on it's own.
The owners and staff were very welcoming and seem to be making a real effort with differing menu themes on various nights of the week in addition to fish specialities and a regular menu. There are also a number of rooms available which if they done to the same standard as the rest of the pub would make it an ideal stop off point only a few minutes from M40 junction at Banbury.
Worth a visit based on our experience
