Walkerbouts Inn - Rhodes
Ranked #2 of 4 Rhodes B&B and Inns
Reviewed January 24, 2014

Forget Hilton, Sheraton or Holiday Inns...this is a pioneer style hotel in the unique and special township of Rhodes. Stepping in is like instantly going back 100 years and is a lovely experience. Rooms are simple, large and comfortable with good bathrooms even if they are a little tired. There is a nice dining/breakfast room and a pleasant louge area. Breakfast is first class. The small bar is truly cosy and friendly and a real meeting point for locals and visitors alike. Toasted sandwiches and wonderful pizzas are served here if needed. There is a nice little beer garden with lovely views, as well as a lovely garden terrace with fabulous views over the town and distant hills.
David and the lovely Ray give great personal service and are endlessly kind, informative and friendly.
If you want a truly different and uplifting experience in an area of South Africa you may not normally think of visiting, The Walkerbout is not to be missed. The 4* rating reflects only the simplicity of the hotel and not any lack of charm or satisfaction.

We were surprised by the service and quality of the food. The rooms of this older establishment is clean but the wooden floors tend to be very noisy. The staff is friendly and very accommodating. They prepared us the most scrumptious pizzas ever for lunch after a day out on a sight seeing trip in the nearby passes.

I spent 3 nights with my family at this delightful jolly place over Christmas , it was a very enjoyable . The inn is situated in a wonderful little conservation town with no tar roads and only just got grid electricity recently. The pioneer town has specifically maintained and conserved its original character from a bygone era
If you like off the beaten track and quite, relatively undiscovered venues this is a must. Activities in the area are... great trout fishing ,breath taking mountain walks and quite extreme 4x4 routes . As an outdoor person I loved this place the Inn and the area and I recommend it to any outdoor enthusiast.

Room Tip: Room 4 was great for a family traveling together

You can't visit the Eastern Cape without going to Walkerbouts in Rhodes! The people are warm and welcoming! They make you feel part of the long lost family that has returned home! The food is simple however very well presented and tasted amazing. You have to stop for a moment and experience what "the centre of the universe" is like ...thank you for a fantastic visit!

Old fashioned hospitality in a town so remote I don't know how they manage to operate so far from civilisation. The 95km drive from Maclear up the Naudesnek pass took two and a half hours and I would visit this town again even if that was all they had to offer. The town itself is frozen in time - so far from everything that one wonders why it developed into a settlement at all. The lovely old stone lodge is furnished with country style furnishings and the en-suite filled with complimentary shampoo etc often lacking in more expensive accommodation. We took the dinner bed and breakfast option and were served a really delicious 3 course meal when we arrived and the breakfast was one of the best I have had anywhere in the world. We were pressed for time so only spent one night but Walkerbouts is on our list for a longer visit. One really needs to spend a couple of days here to see the wild flowers and fly fish in the beautiful rivers.

We were served cold pizza in empty beer boxes for which we were charged R330.00. When I spoke to the owner about this the following day I was told not to be stupid, that the boxes came "straight from the factory". Really? You have to be kidding me! Beer boxes that were filled with dirty beer cans in a truck on a dirt road? A simple apology would have sufficed, rather than being told not to be "stupid" & dismissed like a school child. Not cool Dave Walker.

I arrived at Walkerbouts having hurt my leg up in the mountains above Rhodes and immediately got the hospitality, warmth and care that this guesthouse is well known for. Crutches were supplied by David, my leg professionally attended to by Penny & Irini kindly took me to the clinic. The attention was most appreciated.
The rooms, service, food and pub were all of the highest standard - comfortable and clean. We were made to feel at home and had a most relaxed stay.
I cannot recommend this wonderful guesthouse enough - a perfect spot on the fringe of the town of Rhodes, ideal for exploring the village on foot & the surrounding area. Thanks again Walkerbouts I will definitely be back!
