“Deliver on Your Press Clippings.”
Reviewed April 2, 2011

We had planned on a 3 night stay at Rancho Pescadero as part of out southern Baja vacation, we only stayed 2.
The hotel does not quite live up to its reviews and press clippings, they do market well. A pleasant enough place to stay but:
1) the hotel did not seem to be to busy yet we had to wait an hour for a dinner table - the area they had arranged for dinner service is quite small and the tables very close together making a private conversation impossible.
2) the pool area can be crowded, yes there is a second 'quiet' pool but in this case quiet means no service. Why there is no service at the 'quiet' pool is just one of those mysteries or maybe cost savings - there is a nice bar area but no one there.
3) Hot water would be nice! On the first day we mentioned that we had no hot water and were told we were in a new building and to let the water run till it heated up - no luck. The second solution was to tell us to play with the faucets.... no luck.
The setting is great, the room spacious and clean, the service level is friendly but could be more professional and the food good but not great.
Rancho Pescadero has built hype and a nice property but needs to spend more time delivering on their promise.

When we arrived in our rental car we were warmly greeted and whisked away to the poolside bar for a complementary drink - the most delicious, unique drinks! The staff took our car keys and unpacked our car for us. The room was very cozy - beds were great; hanging chairs on the porch were very relaxing to sit in and listen to the birds and ocean waves crashing. The room came with binoculars to view the whales & dolphins at the beach, bug spray, games... anything you may need and have forgotten. Every morning we woke to a basket at our door filled with fresh fruit and a pot of smooth, freshly brewed coffee. Since the hotel is relatively small, there was plenty of room at the pool and restaurant. There are hats in case you forgot yours... At the beach there are lovely cabana beds, lounge chairs and the staff even collect dried cactus for the oceanside fire pits each day!
The friendly, relaxed staff really make you realize your vacation because they think of everything so you don't have to!

This hotel is absolutely beautiful - it is right on the ocean and the views are spectacular!
The rooms are spacious - we had the Pacific King Suite and the Rancho Double Double for our two boys and they were both spectacular. The service is beyond what one would expect - everyone is friendly, helpful, and willing to do whatever to make your stay more pleasant!
From the front desk staff - Karla, Karla and Mario - to all the fabulous waiters and bartenders(Danny, Marcus, Julio and many more) - we felt so special! The hotel recommended Mario's Surf Shop for lessons and Mario and his team are the absolute best!
You will not be disappointed by this awesome hotel!

I can only add to the accolades of the others here who have written about their stay at Rancho Pescadero. It’s beautiful, low-key and the service is extraordinarily easy-going but never lax. Rancho Pescadero is a perfect example of what you get when (presumably) you hire carefully, treat your team well, train them well and (presumably) pay them a fair, living wage. To a person, everyone on staff was so genuinely kind – they were literally a joy. The only thing I’ll say about the food – which was good – is that the breakfast granola with honeyed yogurt and fruity was the BEST EVER and I'm still pining for the goat cheese lime cheesecake.

As for Todos Santos – eh. A small dusty town with a bunch of tchochke shops. That said, dinner at Santa Fe, in town, is terrific (order the lobster ravioli if it’s on the menu). We also ate one night at Miguel’s, also in town – I get better Mexican food at virtually any restaurant in Chicago. (World Wide wrestling blaring on the TV didn’t exactly help.)

We also went horse riding along the Pacific (arranged by the RP team) with Khia and we loved her!

Lastly, as a gay couple we were totally comfortable.

I will end this review with the letter of thanks I sent to Rancho Pescadero. It tells you something about this place. It is a special place, no doubt, but you should know that it has a niche appeal. That niche is couples seeking to escape to a remote place where they can appreciate each other, surrounded by all the ammenities any reasonable person could desire. The accommodations are first rate, the food and bar are more than adequate, the service is wonderfully laid back, while at the same time attentive to the guest's every need. We went down there for our wedding ceremony and honeymoon. We aren't starry eyed kids (I'm 61, Sharon a decade younger), and we've travelled a fair amount.

The resort isn't ostentatious, but quietly luxurious. Our room was #2. The sleeping and bath area met every requirement:: very comfortable mattress (the best we have found in Mexico), large walk in shower, interesting large sink that extends the length of the five foot vanity, good-sized closet, plenty of storage areas, and combination safe. The patio is at least as large as the sleeping area, with a wall of sliding doors that, when opened, make the entire room seem spacious and airy. The patio has two chaise lounges, a setee, a small breakfast table with two chairs, and a mini-fridge. The views from this room, of the beach and the Pacific, are spectacular. There is a circular staircase off the patio in this room, leading to a second patio on the roof, large enough to house a bed, two bar height chairs, and another couple of chaise lounges. We had coffee up here every morning. Incidentally, a pot of excellent coffee, a couple small pastries, and a fresh fruit plate are delivered to your door every morning between 7 and 7:30 a.m. In the rooms you will find no TV or radio, no phone, not even a clock. It gives you an idea of the intent of the place. There is wifi, and I was able to download a book on my kindle.

The buildings are set back from the beach, so that from a ground floor room you would not have a view of the beach and ocean. The beach is accessed via a short (perhaps a hundred yard) walk through dunes and native vegetation. The beach is expansive, likely another hundred yards wide, and the resort shares it with only one other small resort (perhaps a half mile to the south) as far as we could see. The remaining structures on the beach appear to be private residences. There are few other people on the beach, other than those staying at the resort. The resort has four beds and four palapas with chairs on the beach, and during our week stay we never saw all of them occupied, most times they were all open. There are also four fire pits stocked with dried cactus for evening fires. The beach is not a swimming beach unless you are a strong swimmer and can deal with a heavy surge. It drops off quickly, consequently waves break quite close to shore. There is a point break a short (3/4 mile) walk north up the beach that is popular with surfers. A number of surfing couples were staying at the resort while we were there. The resort has surf fishing rods available for free, and there's a decent chance to catch fish from shore. If you catch them, the resort will cook them.

The resort has two pools, one with a bar. They pools are nicely laid out and of adequate size to accomodate all guests, and there are plenty of towels and loungers. They even lay in a supply of straw hats and magazines in the pool area for the guests. There is a community hot tub and a gas fire pit in the central pool/bar area. The facilities are kept very clean, the bar is well staffed, and a cocktail is never far away although the staff doesn't push drinks.

The small restaurant adjoins the registration area, not a big issue given the place only has 26 rooms. A dining room separated from the registration desk wouldn't be a bad upgrade though. The menu selections are somewhat limited, perhaps a dozen entrees typically. The food is decent. They serve a solid caesar salad with shrimp, and the chili rellenos is quite good. The kitchen will accomodate custom orders, but if you order something custom it will help if you have a working knowledge of Spanish. For appetizers/lunch, the nachos are first rate and the ceviche is excellent.

We didn't take advantage of the spa or yoga offerings, nor did we make use of the available bicycles.

For our purposes, this resort was perfect. If you are looking for a romantic getaway you will not find better. The nearby town of Todos Santos has some decent restaurants and the same type of tourist shops you find anywhere in Mexico. There are a couple of art galleries that offer some really beautiful work. There is virtually no night life. It is a small village, only marginally influenced by tourism, although this seems to be changing.

As promised earlier in this review, I will now quote the letter of thanks I wrote the resort following our stay. It will give you an idea of what they will do for your special occasion:

"To all our friends at Rancho Pescadero,

We're sitting here listening to Arena de Rio's CD. It puts us back in Pescadero with that lovely music softly accompanying our wonderful dinner on the beach. We can't thank all of you enough for the perfect wedding ceremony, the impeccable service (many thanks to my best man Sergio!), the incredible pictures (Rick Kessler, you did an absolutely amazing job, not only on the finished product, but also with the way you made us feel special as you led us through the resort, catching the perfect light and and settings), and the truly memorable dinner on the beach. The music from Arena de Rio (I hope that is the artist's name) could not have been more romantic, not to mention beautifully played and sung. Our Officiant, who's name I have unfortunately forgotten, performed a beautiful ceremony, perfectly attuned to our spiritual needs. And I can't forget the delicious cake you made for us that capped off a great meal on the beach, before a crackling, dried cactus fire. Don, we could not have asked for a more accomplished wedding planner. You anticipated our needs and wants, and gave us a day that exceeded our expectations in every way we can think of. Every single member of the staff at Rancho Pescadero did a wonderful job of making us feel welcome, and attending to our every need. We have travelled a lot, and been to many wonderful places in Mexico and abroad. I am not a gusher, but I can tell you we will never, ever forget the magical experience you all created for us at Rancho Pescadero. Both Sharon and I are truly grateful to you for making our entire experience more memorable than we had ever imagined it could be.

Best regards,
Bob and Sharon"

having traveled to numerous resorts this is at the top of my list. The resort forces you to slow downn no TV, no phone, no clocks etc. The food is top notch, the service special, the best beach all to your self. The rooms are too cool. Can't say enough. crazy dirt road to the resort only adds to the fun.

One word describes Rancho Pescadero.
Phenomenal
Our expectations were exceeded in every way.
The room, the grounds, the people, the vibe...phenomenal
My only complaint (if you can call it that) is the spotty wifi.
Our stay was mid February - beautiful days and cool nights.
