Upon arriving at the Castle I was quite taken aback at the fact that it was an actual castle. When we arrived at the Hostel initially I was disappointed that there were not enough car park spaces but I could park right next to the castle Motte. This was a great experience for me, as a National Trust Member I visit such locations and everywhere is normally guarded by a velvet rope, No such thing here. The Hostel is run as a low cost base for other activities in the area. The staff were friendly and helpful. We ordered an evening meal which was supposed to be a medieval banquet, however, due to some confusion we ended up having a choice of either Chilli Con Carne or Vegetable Lasagne although not exactly what we wanted it turned out to be really nice. Behind the reception kiosk there were an array of Soft and (locally produced) Alcoholic beverages which all our party enjoyed. There was a set of Norman stocks in the courtyard which was an attraction to the kids and adults alike. The accommodation was clean and warm. Bed linen and pillows was provided and offered some entertainment as the younger people struggled to make their beds up. Toilets were located on the first floor and there was a modern heated shower facility. Breakfast was reasonably priced and included an attended service where it seemed like you could have kept eating if you were up to it. Traditional English breakfast, toast and conserves, yogurt and range of cereals. Freshly ground coffee, english breakfast tea orange and apple juice was also available.
The Castle is fabled to be haunted but my snoring kept all out party awake and this must have scared the spirits away too! :oD.
All round it was a great stay and relatively cheap in comparison to an overnight stay in a hotel. One of or party members did quote that it was the most expensive for a Hostel, I really enjoyed it though.
Whilst the town seemed to only have one single pub there was no issue with our kids. Beer was good at the George public house. But we had to be back at the Castle before 11pm to allow the custodian time to lock up. We then purchased a few more beverages and chocolates and retired to a games room where the kids were quite entertained.
Upon leaving we were instructed to place our dirty linen into a hamper downstairs which was also quite fun again watching.
Definitely recommended ..... (CAMP Dad Seal of Approval).
