“A different”
Reviewed January 4, 2014

We took a taxi to Lak Lake with only about one hour from the center of Buon Ma Thuot City. Lak Lake is certainly worth visiting than Buon Don if you want to enjoy riding both boat and elephant across the lake. As far as I concern, there are 2 travel agents, which you can contact to book a riding tour by either way or by both. It costs around $22.5 to ride an elephant (for 3 people) in one hour and $9 to hire a boat in one hour.
The experience of riding a boat and an elephant is amazing and unique. You can also buy a bunch of banana for elephants. They are really nice and cute but you should asked the guider to be more careful when feeding elephant. DON'T STAND BEHIND THEM!

“A refreshing change from the chaos of the big cities - village life & an elephant ride !”
Reviewed January 31, 2013

Our tour company suggested a trip out here from Buon Ma Thuot (about 50kms) as we fancied a break from large cities, temples and pagodas and we wanted to see a little more of the rice fields and rural life. There was also an elephant ride through a village and across the lake that we thought the kids (aged 12 & 10) would love.

Although we had a driver and guide there are also buses that run from Buon Ma Thuot that are pretty cheap - about 25,000 or 30,000 VND. Check with your hotel as to which bus to get.

The drive was about an hour though we stopped of at Dray Sap falls (worth stopping at but not worth a massive detour to) and the drive was very pleasant - lots of small villages, fabulous scenery (fields stretching out to the distant mountains), twisty and relatively quiet roads and plenty of rice fields and locals going about their life. Plenty to see and a relaxing trip.

At Lak Lake we initially had a very enjoyable hour on a couple of elephants. Having read a little about elephants in captivity I was somewhat concerned about how they would be kept and treated. Pleased to say that we were all pleased and a little impressed - though naturally I recognise that elephants really shouldn't be kept to carry tourists around. There were three elephants that weren't tethered/chained, had plenty of shade and appeared to be well fed and looked after. We were provided with bananas to feed them as we arrived, on the trek they stopped twice to feed and on their return they were fed again and we also bought some bananas to feed them. As we passed an hour later they were being fed again. During the trek across the lake the elephants dropped almost completely into the water (gave us quite a fright !) but this allowed the guides to wash and cool the elephants. It was a fabulous way to pass through the village and see the Lake. The kids loved it.

The Lake itself was such a serene and peaceful setting. No mopeds or bikes hurtling around, no horns blaring and no putt putt from boats ! Flanked by rice fields and views to the mountains. We saw locals working in the fields, fishermen out on the lake and school kids heading home. Just a wonderfully relaxing setting - perfect after the noise and pollution of Nha Trang etc.

After the ride we stopped for a brief drink, the kids fed and photographed the elephants and we bought a couple of nice scarfs from a very small stall - but thankfully no pressure to buy and no hassle.

We stopped at a local village afterwards for a 30 minute wander - probably as free from modernisation as we saw throughout Vietnam. One street down a dirt road, largely wooden houses with just a couple of brick units. Kids running around chasing chickens, women cutting the tapioca and drying the rice. Dogs, pigs and buffalo wandering the streets - just what we hoped to see. We got a few great photos but please remember to ask the locals - a couple declined our request to take pics.

All in all a fabulous day in the central highlands, one of our most enjoyable days in Vietnam.

This is another area the guidebooks have not described properly. They give the impression you are in a remote location when in fact it is adjacent to a busy market town. There is little to do here even for nature lovers. The villages are more westernized and so not that interesting.

“The real Vietnam, off the beaten tracks”
Reviewed September 20, 2012

Lak lake is a really good option if you want to visit the real Vietnam, off the beaten tracks. You can go by public bus from Buon Ma Thuot, only 25.000 VND / pax. The bus is a blue one, and there are quite bus stops along Buon Ma Thuot. We recommend you to ask in the reception of your hotel to know if there is one nearby. Do not go to the main bus station, because there are kind of privates vans whom would charge you no less than 50.000 VND / pax. We have stayed in Than Binh Hotel, which is really convenient. You can go to Lak Lake to spend just the day (as we have done) or you can stay in, there are hotels and homestays. You can also have a ride in elephant, really cool, because the elephant gets into the lake. To us, they charge us 300.000 VND / 2 pax - 1 hour, bargain. In our opinion, there is no point taking a tour there, because they are quite expensive, and you can go by yourself and there you can walk and see the village and really nice views from the lake.

We passed through here during our easy rider tour and this was a really beautiful site. There are maby villages around this but i cannot remember the names unfortunately. It seems off the beaten track but probably doubt it as this is a popular trail to Saigon on motorbikes. Great opportunity to take photos.
