Highly recommend Hotel Puerto Calakmul. The setting is beuatiful - the cabins tucked into the forest. The dining area is screened so you can enjoy the forest and birds while you eat. Food is great and the service lovely. Gary who runs it is very congenial and accommodating. The pool is lovely. Rooms are clean and attractive, using natural materials to good effect. The location is unbeatable - A short drive to the spectacular bat volcano and about an hour from the amazing Calakmul ruins.

Welcomed by Gary New Year's Eve who set our trip to rights with great recommendations and a cancelled room. Fine food and cabin with mosquito nets. Used Enrique for a birdwatching tour of the site the next day ... a great birder and patient and excellent guide to the site and surrounds.

The Mayan ruins, when we were there, were simply incredible. We had the place to ourselves...almost...and the atmosphere was fantastic. Silence. And birds. Saw toucans, parrots, morpho butterflies, oceolated Turkeys and both spider and howler monkies. The road down is a nightmare with the pot holes so stick to the 30 km per hour speed limit. The hotel staff are friendly and the rooms clean and simple. The one downside is that the food is unexciting and because there are no alternatives...very expensive..expect to pay London prices for small portions. Still, a small price to pay for the atmosphere.

So if you rather stay in an all-inclusive compound, afraid to come out because you never know what these Mexiricans are up to and customs forbid you to bring your beloved AR': fine. But this hotel is fun. It's right at the first entrance gate to Calakmul (there is another one after 20 kilometers), a little hidden in the woods. Yes it is price, because it's quite hard to maintain stuff in the middel of a rain forest. Be prepared that there is no money machine and if you didn't book it in advance, you'll need to pay cash. And that does not includes essential extras like breakfast and special interest pay-per-view movies since they ain't got no telly anyway. But don't worry: the cooking and wine are excellent, so in stead of watching BS on Fox I advise you to have a romantic dinner in the midst of the jungle.

Thank you for staying with us and your comments. I am glad you enjoyed your stay in this very special area. One needs two nights to be able to see it and to have time to start relaxing. One night is just too short and one misses out on some of the sites that need to be seen by rushing away right after their visit to Calakmul. Not including the distances to be travelled afterwards nor the tiredness after a 5-6 hour trip to Calakmul in 35-40C degrees.
