“Loved it.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 10, 2013

Loved this place. Set in an old disused army barracks, the hotel sits within the old city walls and has a decor resembling a castle.

The rooms are grand in stature with appropriate decor. Rooms were clean and spacious with a more than adequate bathroom. The majority of rooms opened on to the small courtyard which provided a nice area of relaxation with tables and chairs.

The courtyard leads to a secluded outdoor pool. I didn't use it but it appeared clean.

The only meal eaten at the hotel was breakfast which was more than adequate and tasty. There is a simple/ cheaper option of fruits, juice, yogurt and toast or a slightly more expensive option which provides a choice of hot meal option.

Was tempted to stay a second night but schedule did not permit.

My wife and another couple have stayed here twice and enjoyed it both times. You can find more modern hotels in Campeche, but Castelmar has charm. It was a soldier's barrack many years ago, and retains a feeling of old Mexico throughout the hotel. The rooms are adequate with clean, comfortable bed and bathroom.
The swimming pool is adequate, but small and surrounded by a high wall which blocks the sun except for around noon.
The staff is friendly and helpful, although sometimes there are staff on duty who do not speak English, which was ok with us.
Campeche is an interesting city and region to visit, and Castlemar makes a great base for that exploration.

Room Tip: Choose a room away from the noisy side street.

A relatively expensive place compared to the hostels we stayed in but well worth the price. Beautifully laid out private rooms in a gorgeous colonial building - like staying in a grand manor (if you're used to hostels). The pool at the back is a nice touch and the view from the roof near the pool is well worth it.

We got a good deal via hostelworld so worth trying that or hostelbookers for the best price.

PROS
Beautiful building
Beautiful room
The pool
Quiet
Clean

CONS
No breakfast (the breakfast they serve if you want to buy breakfast is standard continental fare but plenty of good local across the street).
Above budget if used to hostels
Maybe a bit too family or couple orientated for some

Would we stay here again? Yes

The hotel is very well located so you can easily visit the city walking. The hotel is a old mansion beautifully decorated, clean and with a nice pool. The rooms are large and nicely decorated.

The staff was nice and attentive. Overall, a very pleasant stay.

campeche is not one of the nr 1 destinations in mexico, but using it as a stopover going to Palenque is a good idea and Castelmar is just the [place to get you into the colonial mexican atmosphere. beautiful set up and rooms, very good service and a location in the middle of the towns center make it worthwhile.

A great old colonial building. The hotel rooms were big and very nice. A small pool but in a lovely little coutyard, not a swimmers pool but good for a refrshing dip after a hard day sightseeing. Great location, on the doorstep of old town...

This is a beautiful old historic building that used to be army barracks! The rooms are a decent size and well appointed, our bathroom was a bit of a cupboard, but the rest of the hotel more than compensated for that. The pool is lovely - small, but refreshing and perfect after a hot day. Breakfast is served in a beautiful shady courtyard, fresh and good value. Secure parking is availabe. Location is perfect - right in the heart of the old city. Staff were helpful, we thought it was very good value and would definately return if in Campeche.
We needed some laundry doing. The hotel doesn't offer this service, but they did recommend a laundry about a 3 minute walk away which was excellent. 10 pesos per kilo, delivered back to your room on the same day.

Room Tip: Make sure you get a room with a window - some don't and seemed a bit dark.
