“Spectacular frieze and lots of monkeys”

Stopped off here briefly en route to Calakmul. The frieze was very interesting and well preserved (make sure you ask for the door to be unlocked!) but did not hold the attention of our children for long. However we were lucky enough to see a troop of Spider monkeys playing in the trees above the path back to towards the entrance; they stayed there for a while and we watched them for ages.

Located very close to the main road and also to the road leading to the ruins of Calakmul. Well worth the stop The main reason to go to this site is to see a very large frieze still with some of its colors that they put inside a the pyramid to preserve it,. You also to get feel what it is like to be inside a pyramid. Very few pyramids are open to the public.

A 55 foot long stucco frieze is what makes this an amazing site. If you visit this site for no other reason, you really should see this frieze. The fact that original colors are still evident and the detail that exists will make your visit worth the time that you took.

There are better sites in the area! If you arrive not expecting the majesty/history of Calakmul, you will not be disappointed. We beelined it to the temple housing the frieze, were awed by it for 20 minutes and took off. Less than an hour spent. The frieze is excellent and when you consider that you only paid 3 bucks to see something that amazing, how could you leave disappointed?...(you would leave disappointed if you couldn't get the door unlocked. It would be better if the signs explaining the frieze were in English...)

Protected by a strange concrete shell, the stucco statues in the interior of one of the temples show the Maya belief in the city Lords' linkage of the surface and underworlds. Tip the man who unlocks the gate 20 or 30 pesos, and be transported to another reality.
