“Stunning faded colourful hacienda”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 12, 2013

It was a really hot day when we arrived at Campeche airport - 36 degrees - phew! We rented a car at the airport and made our way courtesy of google maps to Hacienda Uayamon.

As soon as you arrive you are transported back in time to the days of sisal production and colonial glamour. The cluster of buildings and ruins have a great charm particularly as they are colourful, now fading and crumbling gently, surrounded by jungle with a huge ceiba / kapok tree in the foreground. At night they are cleverly lit to provide an eery, romantic setting.

The rooms are some way from the main building along forest paths. Ours was quite dark with high wooden vaulted ceilings with a modern open plan bathroom along a corridor with huge square bath (we didn't try it since it would have taken an age to fill !), and an outside shaded lounging area.

We only had 2 nights there and needed to explore the local town so didn't make use of all the facilities but the pool within the ruins of the old sisal factory is a superb setting for a cooling swim and lounge in a hammock, and the complimentary 10 minute massage was certainly invigorating.

The staff were very friendly and helpful. Only one spoke any english so some spanish is definitely helpful. The food was ok, not outstanding - perhaps the only thing to let the place down a bit, but you can take your meal wherever you fancy. We had lunch on our own under the huge ceiba tree enjoying the surroundings - marvellous.

If you need wifi it is only available in the main building and we found it quite slow.

It is quite expensive, particularly for Mexico, and part of the Starwood Preferred Resort group so top US prices - but we were glad to have experienced it.

Hacienda Uayamon is, very simple, a little paradise on Earth.
Our "room" was a little house with a large bedroom, a bathroom with a shower, a jacuzzi with a panoramic view to the woods and a covered bench in the forest where you could read or just relax. The scenery is incredible: the rooms/little houses are spread out in the woods, a colonial larger house serves as the main building, and the pool is inserted in the remains of an ancient fabric factory.
The service was outstanding. We went bird watching with one of the staff, who also told us a bit more about the property and the village.
The only thing that is not excellent is the restaurant. Given the high quality of the accommodation, I was expecting a marvellous meal, but it was just good.

This was, without a shadow of a doubt, the best hotel I have ever been to!

Hacienda Uayamon is a gem. It is located about 20 minutes outside of Campeche city, but a world away from everything.

It is not the easiest place in the world to find -- if you're driving yourself, try to arrive during the day. We drove there after nightfall and it is down a bunch of dark country roads lacking any lights, and the road is not well-signed. The property has a quite large sign at the turnoff from the main road, and then again right outside the property, but they are not lit, so at night it's a bit nerve-wracking to find.

That said, it is well worth the trek to this amazingly beautiful oasis of calm and luxury in the middle of the low jungle of Campeche. The property is much more beautiful than is understandable from the pictures on the website. It is arranged as a bunch of small buildings spread throughout the property. You walk down jungle paths through the property to the big house (reception and restaurant), the pool, and the spa. The property is in a state of arrested decay, which makes for a very beautiful and romantic setting. The ruined chapel is especially stunning at night, when it's lit up.

We stayed in "Uaya", which was one of two rooms created in the old hospital building. The room was perfectly appointed, and we had our own private plunge pool and outdoor seating area. It was heavenly to open up the large doors on every side of the room and let the afternoon breezes blow through.

The food is very good -- we found the food at Hacienda Temozon to be a bit better -- but it's fairly amazing what's on offer given that you're in the middle of nowhere. The staff is incredibly gracious and helpful. We had massages and they were terrific. Also I highly recommend taking the bikes out to see the other parts of the property -- there's much to see just beyond the main rooms.

We had never been to Mexico and did not want our first time to be in a heavy tourist area, so we decided to visit Campeche, and I do not regret a single moment. Despite spending three hours traveling through the unmarked Mexican countryside wondering where our magical turn-off dirt road was (I do not recommend traveling in Campeche without a modicum of Spanish), we found it and spent six days in bliss. Know a bit of Spanish, but this place will treat you like royalty. It is more than amazingly beautiful and ever single person on staff is awesome. Some of the staff is of Mayan decent and we were lucky enough to have them tell us the ruins to visit and just talk with them. They are an incredible bunch and the grounds are truly amazing. The cieba tree is enough to hold it's own, but the staff served us drinks in the garden late night, by candle-lit bags. This place is an experience of a lifetime and the staff will make you feel right at home. Kudos on such a great and wonderful staff, Starwood.

Room Tip: Beware of bugs in the summer. The area is akin to a Mexican rainforest in summer and bugs go with th...

My Ex's father treated us to an amazing weekend there.. Beyond all expectations! This place is by far the most luxurious hotel I've ever been to. The beds are amazingly comfortable!
Went to relax in the pool and found myself getting a great foot massage.

impressive hacienda, the rooms are the old houses of the workers very well contioned, consisting in a building which is the main room with an excellent bed, reasonable air conditioned, very nice decoration.... connected through a wooden corridor with another smaller building which is the bathroom, where you can find a large tub with a view to the jungle, and separate shower and good amenities.

good minibar, very limited tv channels selections (6 mexican channels, cnn and several starwood advertising channels).

besides, you have an outdoor "palapa" for each room, with a large bed where you can enjoy the outside (if mosquitos allow you to do so, although insect repelent is part of the room amenities).

the common areas are nice paths through the jungle and old buildings of the original henequen hacienda : the old chappel, the old machines room...

the entire property is charming. the swimming pool is a very special place.

the service is professional and helpfull.

the inside restaurant is nice, however most of guest prefer to enjoy meals at the porch where no fans are installed, making the place too hot, at least in july and even at 9 am. the property should seriously consider installing fans there..

the restaurant offers a limited variety, of average quality and severily overpriced. this was the weakest item of the hotel under my point of view. the service, however, makes every effort in order to please the guest, with the exception of bringing the coffee in the morning, for wich they took about ten minutes the two morning that i stayed there.

i do not recomend having american breakfast included in the room fee, as they do not accept ordering a more expensive item even paying the difference and i would always prefer having breakfast at the outside palapa in the room, ordering to room service.

the hotel offers, at very reasonable extra price, charming dinner alternatives for special occassions, such as dining under a centennial ceiba, illuminated by torches.

the spa was ok, but i have seen better ones.

the free wifi works very well in the room. mobile phones have no cover in the area but hotel wifi keeps you connected with the world.

some minor maintainance failures could be seen ( some broken bulbs in the paths, small damages in the room....) but not big deal.

prices are expensive (close to 380 dollars per night, taxes included taxes), but the hotel is really a special one. i recommend it.
