“4 relaxing nights in Gold- great place!”
Reviewed July 25, 2013

My boyfriend and I stayed at the Gold hotel for 4 nights and really enjoyed it. The service was amazing. Everyone was constantly trying to please you and serve you and make sure you are happy. The rooms were large and beautiful, so was the pool. The beach is a bit far out but that's the way it is everywhere on the Kendwa beach strip. There was constant security so people from outside were not bothering you trying to sell you things while you were laying out in the sun on the beach (as so many do over there). The manager himself came over various times to make sure we were happy, and they gave us a good price, even though we had no booking in advance. The hotel is really beautiful, half board (breakfast+dinner). The only thing was that it was fairly quiet, so for couples on honeymoon that might be great, if you're looking for company/friends/upbeat place, this is not it, however Kendwa Rocks is right next door and filled with young college kids and parties. So it was nice to have the mix. The staff speaks so many languages which is good, though at times it felt less local. But overall, really great experience. We managed to relax, eat good food, and enjoy the beach.

Some of the earlier reviews for this resort were not favourable and my husband and I were rather worried about the type of stay we might have.
Our concerns were unfounded as the resort is now under new management and all staff work very hard to give their guests a memorable stay.
We chose this resort to celebrate our wedding anniversary and we had a wonderful time.
The hotel is surrounded by walkways and gardens and stands on the most beautiful, powder white beach which gently shelves down to the sea. Whilst we were there they had quite a low tide, which meant that you could see the exposed shallow ledges on the sea bed and watch the local women using traditional methods of fishing. You can walk quite a distance from one end of Kendwa beach to the other where there are other luxury hotels, small bars and locals selling their wares.
If you use the loungers on the beach, bar staff bring you nuts and olives at sundowner time and you can enjoy a relaxing drink whilst watching local children playing football or just watch the dhows sail across the horizon.
If you don't like swimming in the sea there is a fabulous swimming pool with a jacuzzi area also ample loungers or you could try a game of pool or table tennis.
The food we had was brilliant and all the staff made great efforts to give polite and attentive service and even taught us some Swahili.
Breakfast was lovely at the bar restaurant overlooking the beach where we could watch local fishermen returning with their catch. Omelettes and crepes could be ordered and there was always a fresh fruit platter and choice of pastries and rolls.
Each evening we had an excellent choice of soups, salads, seafood and meat dishes and the deserts were mmmmmm. Scrummy!!
One evening there was a traditional fare buffet meal on the beach and some of the local Massaii came and entertained us with chanting and dance and the staff wore traditional dress. Another evening we had a superb barbecue where we were spoilt for choice with the menu.
On the evening of our anniversary we were surprised with a very special seafood and lobster dinner on the beach. We were led to our table, which was under a thatched canopy, through an archway decorated with palms and flowers and we were surrounded by lanterns and candles. It was so lovely and very romantic. We even had our own individual and very attentive waiter and special commemorative menus! For my husband and I this was a wonderful end to a lovely wedding anniversary day full of pleasant surprises, as earlier in the day housekeeping staff had decorated our room and bed with flowers and there was champagne and flowers from the management.
Despite a couple of minor hitches with housekeeping and our room, which were soon sorted, we can honestly say that we had a very relaxed and enjoyable stay and would recommend anyone to go to this hotel.

Room Tip: 412 is a good room as it has uninterrupted views and is at the end of the block so is relatively pri...

Gold is a new resort on Kendwa Beach. It is truly lovely and the service is impeccable. The food is quite good and it has two excellent outside restaurants, one on either side.. Kendra Rocks and Essence. This may be some of the best eating on the north side of the Island. The rooms are superb, large and spacious. Kendra is a beautiful beach, larger and more uninterrupted by rocks than Nungwi. Yet, Kendra is adjacent to Nungwi and easily accessable, especially by local boat taxi or a swim.

Gold is lovely and the staff are special.. enjoy your stay!

Room Tip: be sure to get a sea view room

Great location. Best beach on the island, white sand & crystal clear water. Excellent food. Friendly staff. No complaints. Definitely the best hotel in Kendwa and possibly the best beach hotel in all of Zanzibar.

Just returned from several days at Gold Zanzibar and I cannot say enough great things about this property. My friend and I were visiting a friend in the Peace Corps and this was our last stop in Tanzania. The view from the lobby area when you arrive is absolutely gorgeous looking down to the Indian Ocean. Our room was beautifully decorated with a very island/clean decor of whites and gold. The design of the hotel is almost Moroccan themed - there is a gorgeous pool and very comfortable lounge chairs on the beach. The breakfast included wonderful fresh fruit, made to order omelettes or crepes and tons of pastries. Dinner was different every night - my group really enjoyed the traditional Swahili buffet we had one night. I will recommend this hotel to anyone travelling to Zanizbar.
