We spent 3 nights for a girls weekend in Great Calva Cottage.

Findingg the cottage using the website instructions was easy and we were very impressed with how clean and neat the grounds. We were greeted and shown around our cottage which was huge yet cosy- I'd love to stay here in winter!

12 of us stayed and there was more than enough space for us all- the dining room table easily accommodated us all and we had plenty of space in the living room. Apart from a rolling pin the kitchen had everything we needed to cook our own meals and the afternoon tea which was waiting for us when we arrived was a perfect touch.

Despite the rain we had a great time in the hot tub and the sauna and spa bath made the cottage feel like we were in our own spa!

A lovely little place to stay, with extra touches that make Monkhouse Cottages feel quite special.

We stayed for a week in Raven Howe as a family of 5. The property is very easily accessed from the M6 which makes it an ideal base. As you drive through the electric gate (which was a nice touch as felt very secure and also led our young children to believe it was magic) the grounds are beautiful and very well maintained. On arrival, we were warmly welcomed and shown around before we enjoyed a delicious homemade afternoon tea. The cottage itself was very cosy yet spacious. We had preordered our tesco shop as suggested which arrived without hassle and we were set up for the week.

There is so much to do in the area, we were never stuck for things to do. Although the heart of the lake district is a good hours drive, there are many quaint villages within a few miles radius. Handy for pubs, shops etc. That said, it is worth the drive to the touristy spots also. We enjoyed trips to Ullswater, Keswick, Ravenglass steam railway and much more. The children were kept entertained which is obviously the priority. The grounds of Monkhouse Hill are stunning and the childrens play area is a bonus. It is so peaceful and although there are a number of cottages, at no point did we even feel aware of any other people around other than the owners who were always pleasant.

The hot tub was a very welcome addition at the end of a busy day and looking out over the beautiful countryside was just perfect.

To find such a high level of accommodation which is also dog-friendly can be tricky but we found a gem at Monkhouse Hill Cottages.

Monkhouse Hill was our 1st choice for "Home from Home" to host 25 American family and friends for our Daughter's wedding in the Lake District. The owners, Jennifer and Andrew, could not have been more welcoming and helpful in making sure we were all comfortable and that everyone enjoyed English country living and leisure. We let 4 cottages for two weeks as our base for wedding preparations and exploring the Lakes. We sat 40 friends of the bride and groom for a relaxed grill fest and and night of storytelling the evening before the wedding. Great Calva is 1st class in every way. Our only caution for those who need Internet is wireless service is spotty at best. We all journeyed to the complimentary spa in Penrith when we needed it. The county is working to make new cell towers a priority and hopefully Monkhouse will be fully online any day now. But for now you have the perfect excuse to tell the boss you are on an old fashioned vacation and beyond technologies reach. Savor the fleeting chance. We look forward to many happy return trips to visit our new Cumbrian family and friends.

Just arrived back from a weekend at Monkhouse Hill with a group of 12 girls, we had Cloven Stone and Brae Fell cottages and they are just lovely.
Loved the old style building with the cute little windows, exposed stone and beams mixed with a modern touch of an upside down style property (bedrooms downstairs & living area upstairs) and great decked balcony and hot tub. Hot tub absolutely made the weekend!
The cottages are well equipped with plenty of good quality plates, glassware, everything you need to cook or entertain, quality appliances - dishwasher, fridge/freezer and washing machine. Everything is provided apart from food (ie wshing up liquid, hand soap, dishwasher tablets etc) We also had use of the North Lakes Spa which is well worth a visit.
Monkhouse Hill had a relaxed feel to it by the owners, nice touches like local cakes proivided upon welcome. All in all a great time was had, many thanks for a memorable weekend :-)

We had such a lovely stay at Monkhouse Hill and would definitely recommend it.

Away from the hussle and bustle of the main "touristy" parts of the Lakes, but near enough for a spot of sightseeing too, Monkhouse Hill is a tranquil little piece of luxury where you can really relax.

We stayed in Round Knott and it was a lovely size for us (Myself, Hubby and our 1 year old daughter). The cottage was really clean and we were even welcomed with a scrummy Afternoon Tea! There was plenty of everything you might need (cutlery, crockery, pots and pans etc) which made cooking in rather than dining out really easy (this was our first family holiday and we cooked more than we ever did when it was just us two)!

Round Knott has a private hot tub on the balcony and the views were just beautiful, it meant we could really chill out when little one went to bed.

We used the pre-arrival ordering service too, ordering the village hamper (which was yummy and meant we didn't need to bring too much food with us) and lots of baby things (which really took the pressure off packing - plus everything was really clean and in great condition when we got there which we were so pleased with).

Overall, Monkhouse Hill is great place to holiday - really family friendly but not "in your face", you could easily come for a romantic getaway and not notice any kids! We had a fab stay and hope to saty again in the future.

we stopped in Raven Howe cottage for our honeymoon & it was fantastic, great surroundings & nice people, great accommodation & we will be defiantly returning at a later date. The hot tub on the balcony was great & really made our honeymoon so much better, the cottages are very private & just a short drive away from local town & only about 20 mins from Keswick. would defiantly recommend 100%
