Visiting this ancient giant of an olive tree is like coming face to face with the Ent Treebeard from Lord of the Rings. According to the experts, the Ulivone has been around for about 2700 years, and it is still bearing fruit that makes the much prized Sabina D.O.P. Extra Virgin Olive Oil. To think of the waves of people from different eras and cultures that have harvested olives and made oil from this tree: Sabines, Romans, Lombards, Byzantines, medieval monks, to modern Italians... it is just mind blowing... People are impressed with the great red cedars of Canada's west coast, or the majestic California redwoods, but there is something truly awe inspiring about a living tree that has fed and provided precious olive oil to so many generations. I would recommend combining a visit to L'Ulivone with a tour of nearby Fara In Sabina's Civic Archeological Museum and Farfa Abbey. There is a small fee to have access to the tree.
