As a NZer who has visited this property regularly for over 15 years I hesitate to let anyone know about it. Oh well!

Firstly, all the units are individually owned and the property has full time managers. You could be rubbing shoulders with visitors or owners (who have to allow their unit to be let out for so many weeks and holiday weekends each year).

All units are individually decorated and furnished, but do have standard things like microwaves and showers (no baths) in each unit. There are one, two and three bedroom units and the view is different from each.

This may account for one reviewers dislike of the pillows, but we all have different tastes here. I like mine very flat.

Yes, the slivers of soap are small, but this is common to motels in NZ. It is not a hotel or resort. Not many places provide beach towels.

There is a steep, but very safe, path down to the motel's private beach - it's worth the trek.

This property is on its own headland with one of the best views in NZ. Would you worry about the soap?

So please don't tell anyone about this place. I want to continue to be able to get bookings relatively easily.

We stayed for 1 night at Pacific Rendezvous recently. We were extremely dissappointed and shocked at what they adverstise as a 4 star accommodation. The grounds of Pacific Rendezvous are certainly 4 star and well maintained, but the interior of the unit is a different story.

The interior of the unit was not cleaned properly. I thought I read somewhere that they recently renovated all the units. Can't seem to find where I read this, may have been in their internal book, its certainly not the case or I misread this information.

The entrance had not been swept in months, it us full of feathers, leaves and the drain was blocked with dirt.

There was food stains on the wall in the hallway.

The carpet was worn on the staircase, look like it had been there for 30 years.

The couch had hairs on it and sand/dust. You could still see where the last people were sitting which made it obvious that it hadn't been cleaned.

The quilt covers (a maroon colour) on all the beds were covered in white fluff, looked disgusting. The one in the master bedroom had severaI stains on it. It looked like it was washed, but it still turned me off using it that night.

Inside the wardrobe was where the sweeping brush for the kitchen was kept. It was full of hairs and dirt from when it was last used. It wasn't even cleaned when put back in the wardrobe. To make matters worst the extra blankets for the beds were on the floor in the wardrobe beside the dirty sweeping brush!

The master bedroom looked like some attempt at a renovation. There was a half completed wooden floor in the master bedroom. The area that wasn't completed (which was the size of the bed and larger) was covered in a cheap mat/rug. The room looked really tacky. The bed was very uncomfortable to sleep on.

The Kitchen bench top was clean but the drawers were a bit dirty. We only had 4 of everything, which was OK since we were only staying 1 night, for a 4 star accommodation you would expect at least more crockery. Some of the utensils were very old and tacky looking, not what I would expect from a 4 star.

The fridge, and stove was very old, again not what I would expect from a 4 star place.

One of the blinds in the lounge room was worn at the sides.

Seeing the hairs on the couch and the dirty sweeping brush in the wardrobe put me off the place.

I was extremely disappointed in P.Rendezvous. I was expecting a 4 star accommodation and instead I felt I got a 1 star accommodation. We paid $150 a night and felt it was only worth $80.00 a night.

The Pacific Rendezvous - Tutukaka (literal translation Parrot’s Perch) (near Whangarei) A self-contained, non-serviced apartment accommodation located in a spectacular setting atop the cliffs above Tutukaka Harbor and overlooking the Poor Knights Islands Marine Reserve dive area on the Pacific.

Our unit, number 15, was a two bedroom, with queen in the bedroom and two twins in the second bedroom, sofa, chair, table with four chairs and color tv with dvd/vcr in the living room, small, but functional full kitchen with full size refrigerator, small four burner stove, sink, basic cutlery, pots & pans, dishes in the kitchen, and a microwave. The usual coffee press and hot water heating (hot pot) apparatus, and tea pot, along with tea bags, sugar, and instant coffee were provided.

Fresh towels are available daily, but the unit is not cleaned except every five days for long stays, or at an additional daily charge of $20,if daily servicing is required. Basic cleaning supplies are provided, and full size ironing board is available. Two “conditioning shampoo” foil and one small soap were provided by way of amenities (for a three night stay) with no indication of any others forthcoming.

Other than the gorgeous grounds and setting, other recreational opportunities include a pool and spa pool, and a game room with pool table (.50 to operate) and table tennis, with a .50 deposit for table tennis balls, putters and balls, petanque court, and tennis courts (fee of $1.00/hr and racquet hire at $1.00) and a beach areas with fishing and swimming. Barbeques are available as well.

Guest laundry is operated on an “honesty box” basis at $1.00 per load washed and $2.00 per load dried, and there are laundry lines and pins available as well. Nearby are kayak rentals, dive boats, cave trips, charter fishing, golf, and snorkeling. The Marina area at Tutukaka provides three restaurants and a small town nearby has some basic services and supplies. Some grocery items are available for purchase at the front desk.

Nearest gas station is just outside of Whangarei or north almost to Paihia, so be sure to have plenty of gas before venturing into the region. Dive and snorkel boats operate from the harbor, and swimming beaches are plentiful in the area.

Pillows were terrible- flat and hard, with no options available. Heaters were provided. Cooling is by natural breezes, and cross ventilation was adequate during our stay. No screens on widows or doors, leading us to wonder what this might be like in the height of summer. However, screening is uncommon in New Zealand which may indicate a lack of insect problems.

Lovely setting, comfortable units, but strong sense of “nickle and dime” cost cutting which may be fine with the mostly local clientele who know to bring their own beach towels, shampoo, etc. but it felt sort of chintzy to us, which was not in keeping with the setting or the overall feel of the property, which is beautifully manicured and well maintained.

This is a wonderful self contained facility, owned and operated by a husband & wife team. You can stay in a two story, or single story unit and the views are beautiful no matter what room you are in. There is a security gate to enter (this is because the views are so breathtaking, they probably had many looky-loo drivers.) and on the hill overlooking the water are sheep that quietly graze on the grass. This is a peaceful place, very low key, just like the area. There is a small store on the property in case you need anything. The harbor is a close drive, and visible from the property. There is a laundry room, with washers, dryers and clothes lines outside, with payment on the honour system. I don't think there are any units with bath tubs available. The units are clean. Kitchens are stocked with all utensils, and cooking items. There is a small pool and spa, and game room, put-put golf, trampoline and climbing unit for kids. I loved it here.

This is THE place to stay when in Tutukaka...it is a bit more costly than other hotels in the area (~$100 USD/night), but the view is breathtaking and the rooms are HUGE, with two levels, fridge, stove, etc. If you can swing it, you won't regret staying there. It's a great base to explore the rest of Tutukaka, and close to the dive operators for the Poor Knight's.
