Granted this excursion was booked late, but Island Marketing had no trouble charging our credit card a deposit for an excursion that did not take place. We actually got the confirmation (which we were to take with us to the meeting location) the day AFTER the excursion was to take place!

When we got to the dock, a very nice security officer called Island Marketing and left a message. A half hour later he called back and was told no one was coming. No explanation, no attempt at contacting us, they simply did not show up.

We were told by others that this company is not reliable. We know this to be true!

We took the Sunset Cruise and got an 'inside' view of the harbor and bay area by Captain Neil. The cruise begins and ends at Skippack Jack's so you may opt to eat there before or after the cruise. Either way we really enjoyed the short but informative cruise.

A group of 14 of us reserved a private island tour and had an excellent tour guide named Thomas that took us around the whole island and gave us a wonderful explanation of the history and the french and dutch side explanation. Thomas took us where we wanted to go and gave us some beach and some shopping time. It was a great excursion!

This review is to tell you how to see the French section of St. Maarten (the largest part) without paying the $20/person or so fee that the cruise ships want you to pay.
When you land in Philipsburg, go to the Tourist Information desk (open air and may not be manned) to get a map, just as you get off. Then go ahead and visit that part of the island. You may have to take a taxi to get into town, because the walk is really too far with limited time. This Dutch part of the island is very touristy and not too interesting, except if you can find a local café and enjoy a drink of something cool!

Then track down (on the street -- they're frequently there) the local bus to Marigot. That's the main city on the French side (north). The sign will be in the window and the "buses" are old VW-van-looking vehicles, but they ride all right. That's the local bus and it costs (in 2013) $2/person! It's a long ride (20 minutes or more), and you get to see the local people as they board and leave the bus at various stops. The ride is beautiful, as you pass above some Caribbean bays and local spots. The bus drivers speak English, Dutch, French, and the local language, and they're very friendly and helpful.

If you don't have lunch on the Dutch side, I highly recommend waiting until you see the selection of lovely small French restaurants in Marigot. They have true French specialties, and the prices are even in Euros (so check the exchange rate before you get there). There is an old fort (St. Louis) at the north end of Marigot, way up high on a hill, and you can get a picture of that while you're at the bay/port area of Marigot.

Wander around (there's a great local grocery store) some interesting boutiques, a
"Dollar Store" and then head back to the main road to catch the bus back. It's a delightful way to spend the day and you will have seen the two sides of the island and all their differences.

I can't answer all the questions below about accessibility, strollers, etc. since I didn't need to know that. You can buy postcards there, but don't send them home from there: it'll cost you $1.00 each! Wait until the next island and send them from there for a normal postcard price.
