Tilal Liwa Hotel
Ranked #1 of 2 Hotels in Madinat Zayed
Reviewed July 17, 2011

Just under 2 hours from Abu Dhabi, is the Tilal Liwa hotel. Although it is just outside of Madinat Zayed, there really is nothing around with the exception of the camel race track and some camel farms. Although they were a couple of kilometres up the road. The Liwa Oasis is approximately 50 km south of the hotel We spent two nights here and it was just perfect. Although, it was the middle of summer and hot this time of the year, the hotel was fairly busy due to the Date Festival in Liwa. We were greeted upon arrival by one of the managers, who answered our questions and told us about the hotel. It only has two floors and just over 100 rooms. We had a ground floor room, that was about 20 feet from the pool. It had a little patio with a bench and table, and also had two beach chairs right out in front of the patio in case you didn’t want to lay directly by the pool. The rooms were clean and spacious, and there was fresh fruit upon arrival. The curtains are very good at keeping the light out.

There is one main restaurant, the pool side restaurant, and a bar. The main restaurant has a buffet for breakfast and dinners, but I also believe you can order a la carte. I thought the food on the first night was very good. It was a seafood buffet. The brunch buffet the next day was ok, not worth the price though. They had a different variety of food, from hotdogs to Indian curry, different variety of desserts. The breakfast buffet wasn’t bad at all, with a variety of foods and someone to make the eggs of your choice. That was included in our room rate.

I personally liked this hotel, the pool area was kept nice and clean, and the attendants were friendly. The view from the edge of the pool to the Empty Quarter is beautiful, but it seemed like they left the patio unfinished. There was a small gym, and you can have sisha by the pool in the evening overlooking the desert. We were lucky to be there during a full moon so made it all the more prettier. I will definitely find my way back to Tilal. It’s a nice weekend getaway if you just want to go somewhere and relax.

The staff were always friendly and always had a smile on their face. Even at 7 am when we ordered coffee because we couldn’t sleep and decided to get up for the day. Service always was prompt. There was nightly/afternoon turn down service which was a nice touch.

My one real complaint is there is no covered parking. When you are there in the middle of summer and get in your car after being parked in the sun all day, is a bit rough.

This was home to me for 6 months and I would recommend it to anyone. Cleanliness is second to none, the food was very good and, above all, the service is excellent. Whilst this is a very good hotel, the staff at all levels, make the place what it is.
Room service runs for 24 hours and is delivered with a smile, whatever the hour. The gym is very adequately equipped but does need a better layout and upgrading to match the standards elsewhere. The pool is superbly run, with regular testing for temperature, Ph values etc. and is backwashed as per spec.
Whilst some negative comment could be made about the cost of drinks, comparison with prices in the English cities can be favourably made. However, remember this is a Muslim country and the hotel is in the most traditional area of the Emirate so, why should they be seen to remote alcohol?
The rooms are very clean and spacious and whilst the second visit by housekeeping, later in the afternoon, might disturb the afternoon nap (use the 'Privacy please' notice), they are there only to ensure you have everything you need.
A parking service for the car is often welcome, as is the welcoming drink on first arrival. The gardens are very well kept and, as you lie by the pool, there is a poolside drinks service for you.....I am missing that already!
The internet connection is not good, but that seems to be similar in other areas of the Emirate.
In summary, the management of the hotel are very much on the ball and the staff are probably the friendliest and most helpful. Along with the other activities available to you, this a great place to stay and is a compensation for its' relative isolation.

Room Tip: A room looking inwards, with a balcony, is better, but make the booking as early as possible.

Perfect weekend getaway in the UAE, although despite the hotel name some 50km away from Liwa half way between the coastal highway and the big dunes. Took us 2:15 hrs to reach from Dubai Marina. Beautiful Arabic architecture throughout the hotel, fabulous infinity pool with large shaded area underneath archway, good breakfast, and thanks to no humidity the intense summer heat (46'C) was actually quite 'pleasant'........for UAE residents living on the humid coast I mean. F+B prices like other UAE hotel, although some items were a little over priced.
Nearest civilisation is Madinat Zayed, some 10km drive from the hotel, the drive to the main Liwa village takes a little more than half an hour. The road to the tallest Liwa sand dunes is new and all tarmac but with quite some sand blown on the road in certain areas which could pose a challenge to normal cars.

Stayed there for 1 Night and I was impressed, it was my first time to stay in a Desert Resort; the surrounding desert view was magnificent.

Standard of the room and breakfast was high, stuff was friendly and helpful.

Excellent choice for relaxing vacation away from anything else

We stayed one night at Tilal Liwa. It's approximately a 1 hr 45 minute drive from Abu Dhabi into the western region of the Emirate. The hotel is the only establishment in the area for quite a distance, but that's why you go there! The architecture and Arabian theme is beautiful throughout the hotel. Swimming in the pool and looking through the archway into the vast empty quarter is amazing! The rooms are very clean, well designed and well appointed. Getting a room with a walkout patio area to the pool is a plus. There are plenty of TV channels and the free WiFi is a great bonus. The restaurant Al Badiya service is quite slow, which is our only complaint during our stay. The front desk, housekeeping and poolside staff were very helpful and attentive. Would definitely return!

Room Tip: Pool View room provides easy access to the pool!

Spent 1 night at the hotel, following a trip to the Liwa desert. A beautiful hotel, located in a middle of a desert (don't be expecting a repeat of the Morib dune here though). We stayed in a desert view twin-bed room - which was adequate in size (again the desert is more of a dirt patch). Everything was very clean and comfortable. The decor of the hotel is stunning - so make sure to bring your camera. Complementary breakfast was tasty, and there was ample variety. Overall, a great experience. Would highly recommend it.
