The Netherlands doesn't have a large number of castles, since their defensive systems where largely based on their towns. This is arguably the finest castle in the Netherlands (at least its the most interesting I've been to). The location opposite the Royal Netherlands Yacht Club and beside the IJsselmeer lake is also superb. To make it a full day you can add a trip to Pampus (the ferry leaves from near the castle) or (my personal recommendation) to the nearby fortress town of Naarden Vesting.

This is definitely tailored more towards children, but still interesting for an adult. There is a "tour" offered with entrance fee, but is given only in dutch. Other speakers will be given a card in their language describing the 5 rooms you will visit. Though I felt like missed out on some details not written on the info cards provided. The 5 room tour is about 30 mins long. The rest of the castle you view and climb the towers on your own. And take the bus from Amsterdam Amstel NOT a train from Central (learned the looonger way)

We spend a lovely day at this castle. The castle is situated just to the east of Amsterdam on the shores of the IJsselmeer. It is in a very good state of maintenance and gives you a good feel of how life must have been in the Middle Ages and in the golden age when PC Hooft resided in and governed from this location.
The castle is very child friendly. They have a kids treasure hunt, interactive games, dress up, pencils and colouring paper in the restaurant, kiddy toilets etc etc.
Not sure kids need a lot of encouragement when visiting a castle this beautiful, but the I guess they really want to make sure they have a good time.
When visiting in low season you can park at the castle entrance. On busy days expect to park further away along the A1 highway. When parking nearby (what we did) please note that you can only pay with chipknip (Dutch e-wallet) or maestro compatible bank card. Not with cash!!
The entrance fee includes a free 30 minute guided tour through 5 furnished rooms with decor from the golden age. Beautiful furniture and good explanations from a knowledgeable guide. Tours are done in the Dutch language, but hand-outs are made available in foreign languages to the guests from abroad.

We loved it, and can recommend as a little add-on to your trip to Amsterdam and it's surroundings.

The castle can also be reached by the Amsterdam ferry leaving from the end station of tramline 26. Ferry leaves once or twice a day and combination tickets for ferry and castle are available.
