My father suggested the Raglan Arms on our drive home from Abergavenny. Set a little off the beaten track this is a lovely country pub made over to dining. Sat on the soft sofa's by the log fire on to study the menu with complementary olives and fresh, home made bread. Varied menu which should suit all comers. Decided on Roast beef with all the trimmings. The generous portion of beef was absolutely delicious. Two courses for £18 mean it is not the cheapest Sunday Lunch, but certainly one of the best. Staff pleasant and attentive.

We have had a few meals at the Raglan Arms, this was on a snowy January night so not many people there. Both Waitresses were friendly and very helpful, we sat down on the leather settee's in front of the loverly log fire, with olives and roasted nuts.
Menu is not overly extensive but something generally to suit all tastes, starters were very good and I had a rib eye steak for main, the steak was good but not excellent, my wife had another starter for her main a vegetarian dish which she said was excellent.
Deserts were a chocolate dish with ice-cream very nice.
Chilean Red wine, very nice but bit pricey for what it was.
It is one of the better restaurants in the area and worth a visit.

Bread from their own ovens and unsalted butter were just the start of a really well balanced and tasty meal prepared by people who obviously care about sourcing ingredients and cooking them properly. A grilled mackerel fillet topped a spicy dhal with a homemade flatbread - all fresher than a daisy with a little salad to top it off. Mains were a chicken saltimbocca - new on the menu and no doubt there to stay - and a homemade burger topped with blue cheese, handcut fries etc - top quality ground beef cooked pink as a good burger should be. Puddings were a lime tart whose accompaniment was a homemade crunchie ice cream and meringue nest - both were beautifully made but didn't really go together so I ate them separately and had 2 for 1, the other was a light creme brûlée with pears poached delicately in saffron.
Roaring fire, tolerance of babies, locals at the bar just having a drink, a group of 10 having a celebration meal - top marks all round for the Raglan Atms.

We stopped here for a light lunch en route to mid Wales for New Year festivities and so pleased we did. A really friendly welcome and prompt service got us off to a good start. The standard menu offered only 2 or 3 courses but a simple request and a single course would be no problem. Mrs T had fishcakes with a chive voloute and chips and I had veal holstein - both were delicious. A power cut started just as our food arrived but the staff were great and had plenty of candles out very quickly making for a great atmosphere. The kitchen carried on on gas and they pulled an old push me pull you card machine from the back of the counter so no hold ups for us or any other guests. Just lovely!

Only ever had a light lunch here but come back again and again. It's a great discovery (once you've found it) which we stumbled across on the internet. Fantastic Welsh Rarebit and complimentary bread and olives etc, plus spritzers, got us on our way for less than thirty pounds. I call that a bargain.
