We finished our Pennine Way walk here. Although it is full of walkers it did not offer a drying room. The welcome was not brilliant but the room was spacious enough and the evening meal was generous and well cooked. Breakfast was disappointing though. Guess it would be fine for overnight stay before doing the 3 peaks..

We were beginning to wonder whether we had booked the right place or not looking at the previous reviews, we had stayed here before in the past.

Well we had. Some of the previious reviews are nothing like we experienced.

Arrived early evening, to be shown to our room by a pleasant man, who asked us if we required a normal breakfast or a early breakfast. We went for the early option as we were doing the 3 peaks challenge on the first morning . The breakfast was quite adequate cereals toast fruit juice tea and coffee. The full breakfast on the Sunday was very good.

The room was larger than a lot we had stayed in , was spotlessly clean and had a very comfortable bed. The furniture was old but nothing wrong with it and matched the old building ,modern furniture would have looked out of place. Yes the walls had chip wood wallpaper on but what is wrong with that it was all decorated to a high standard and at least the wallpaper was not hanging off like in some places we have stayed in. We had a bath and a shower in our room.

The food was extremely good, and reasonably priced. My wife had the cheese and Beetroot pie the first night and was so good had the second night to we even brought the recipe home with us so we can have it at home to. The food and drink are so good you will want to return.

We never came across any rude staff they were all very friendly and helpful. The landlord lent us a map as we had forgotten ours and showed us the best route to take on our journey, his wife sat and talked with us too on the Saturday night.

The location is ideal for walking and touring.

As this was not our first time here , it won't be our last either. Some of the previous comments are nothing like we experienced in fact they were totally the opposite.

Great place to stay either for one night on Pennine Way walk (as was the case for me) or a little longer to explore the area. Clean and tidy room with helpful staff and great home cooked food. A little gem !

Hold the front page! Shock-horror - "Cereal is in Tupperware", "The TV is small", "Carpet in the bathroom" - oh dear oh dear, the world will end. If insignificant issues like this worry you, then fair enough, but when 'inconsequential whinging' is introduced to the Olympics there are medal winners here!
Reviews are all about personal experience, so here is mine.
After a long walk when I am wet, cold and clarted with mud I want a few basic things:
1. A big enough room to move in and unload rucksacks etc. The room we had was big enough to swing several large cats in. I care not one iota that the wardrobe doesn't match the chest of drawers. The room was clean, warm and comfy.Box ticked.
2. A nice bed. The bed was very big and comfy. Box ticked.
3. Good food. We enjoyed two excellent evening meals. Good quality produce, hot, varied, and with good service. Couldn't be faulted and all for less than a tenner. The full English breakfast was fine. The self catering breakfast (ahead of a 6am start to our walk) was perfectly adequate. Box ticked.
4. A decent bar. There are several hand pumped beers and guest ales and a fair selection of malt whiskeys to finish things off (2 less now though!) Box ticked.
5. Friendly staff. We received a warm welcome and were served politely and efficiently all weekend. Box ticked.
No, it's not a Radisson. It is a Dales country pub catering for walkers. It is a building that is a couple of hundred years old. It has character and is not a soulless modern city boutique hotel - thank goodness.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will certainly visit again.

Having recently completed the 3 Peaks I thought I would add my thoughts to this site and have to say I am amazed at some of the comments left....they are in no way indicative of my experience.

I arrived at nearly 11pm and was given a pleasant welcome and shown to my room with everything explained - bathrooms, breakfast etc.

The room was clean and the bed was VERY comfortable, it doesn't have fancy decorations or swanky bedding but that doesn't change the fact that the room did exactly what it should.

My room only had a basin and as such I used the bathroom just down the hall and having used the bathrooms on both floors I found them to be always clean and tidy.

The crowning glory for me though has to be the quality of the food served - as part of a large party we ordered a lot of meals and they were all cooked and served quickly and cooked well - the steaks were beautiful, the fish, bangers & mash and pie all looked great and went down a treat.

If you like a proper pint then you won't be disappointed - Old Peculiar and Black Sheep both on draft and both kept nicely - it's strange how a few pints of Old Peculiar makes you forget your aches and blisters.

Breakfast the next morning lived up to the standards set the night before.

All in all a very pleasant stay, a very warm welcome, great food and ales and comfortable rooms - if you're looking for the Crowne Plaza book the Crowne Plaza - if you're looking for a proper pub in a proper community with a proper heart than book the Crown Hotel.

not being one to write poor reviews as any one can have a bad day but would have to agree with the reviews from the week end 8/9 June 2012
To label every one as in that group is poor and I must admit I saw no mud being trampled into the hotel by the people you mentioned so would wonder if they were trying to discredit the review
There is a lack of investment in the hotel we had lights that did not work and our friends all had problems with their rooms such as showers not working and poor quality of the accommodation. This did not really bother us as we were just there for the walk but to pay a premium price for poor quality does not bode well. Found the bar expensive and felt we were being taken advantage of and whilst the food was ok I would not call it good value for money.
Felt the warmth of the Yorkshire people I have experienced in the past was sadly lacking and all we were was a cash pony to be exploited at every opportunity
