Girl behind the counter lacked some pleasantries so wandered 100m down the rd to the new cafe (Under the Oaks) which was lovely.

“Good, unpretencious food”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 26, 2014

There are a number of eateries in this rural town north of Christchurch, but this one, owned and managed by an award-winning chef, is known in this region for its quality and consistency.

It is situated in an historic, cottage-style building with additional garden seating and has full wheel-chair access. Furthermore, the staff pride themselves on giving customers a friendly and efficient service and ensure that they always serve delicious, high-quality meals.

Whatever your reason for visiting this establishment - for great coffee with morning or afternoon tea; a tasty lunch; or to dine by candlelight - you won’t be disappointed.

Some suggestions are: The chicken liver pate flavoured with mushrooms, bacon and brandy, and served with toasted rye bread and apple and mango chutney. Also, the filo pastry filled with sundried tomato, basil pesto and feta cheese then oven baked and served with salad and chutney. There is also a small selection of interesting wines.

“Great Cafe”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 6, 2013 via mobile

Everything about this venue is good. The food is well cooked, tasty, and well presented, the service is very friendly and efficient and the whole cafe has a buzz and very positive ambiance. If you are looking for good, wholesome cooking from a restricted but nicely varied menu, Cafe 51 is for you.

Lovely atmosphere. Friendly staff. Lovely food. Absolutely worth stopping for. I have been there several times now and never been disappointed. Has a homely feel to it but good quality meals. Great coffee.
