“Hof Gorei - a great place to stay”
Reviewed November 12, 2009

Hof Gorei Beach Resort, Samal Garden Island, Davao del Norte

This report refers to my fiancée and I staying at this Resort in October 2008

Let me start with a little comment about the alleged safety issues in Davao.
As Davao is part of Mindanao, one would be forgiven for having heard about safety related issues in the News. Let me say that my fiancée is from Davao and I personally have never seen any signs of trouble and I have never felt threatened in any way, even when walking alone at night through some of the areas off the beaten track. The Mayor in Davao has addressed petty theft and drug related crime with an iron fist.

Upon arrival at the Sta. Ana Wharf in Davao, the pier used by the boats to bring you to Hof Gorei, I have to admit that “mixed feelings” where surfacing, as this location is all but pretty, if compared to the excellent facilities one finds upon arrival at the pier servicing the Pearl farm Resort.

However, after a 50 Minute ride in the Resort's own boat, all negative feelings where dispelled intimidate, once we laid eye on the beautiful surroundings of the Hof Gorei Beach Resort.

We where greeted at the Hotel's pier by the Resort Staff with a Fruit Juice and guided through some magnificent gardens directly to our accommodation.

Having had reserved one of the Beach Huts, we found our air-conditioned accommodation to be very spacious, exceptionally clean and nicely furnished in traditional style, with an accent on natural building and decorating materials.

Resort Staff, who are all very friendly and not at all intrusive, took our orders for dinner, which we where going to have served on the terrace of our own Hut, overlooking the Gardens and the Sea.

The food is, for what you can usually find in the Philippines, not the cheapest, but the quality is way above average and, let's face it, under 9$ for a Main course is still more than reasonable.

The freshwater pool, complete with swim-up bar, is beautifully illuminated at nights and is a welcome place of refreshment to cool off from the warmth.

As the Resort, which includes a nice beach, is very new and not yet well publicised, you may find, like we did, that you are sharing the place with only two or three other guests.

Whilst on the subject of beach, it should be noted that the Resort is putting quite some effort in removing any stones and rocks from the water, which had left the seabed covered in a little mud at the time we visited it. This is only natural and should resolve itself in due time. The sea is absolutely safe to swim in and a Security Guard look your safety from his Tower whilst you are swimming. According to some of the guests we spoke with, Diving and Snorkelling is supposed to be just out of this world !

All the usual Water sports activities, from diving to Jet-ski, can be catered for, as long as you arrange it a day in advance. The same is true for any Spa treatments.

If you are looking for “high-life” and Nightly Entertainment, then this place is not for you.

If, however, you are looking for a place where you can find total relaxation, paired with beautifully kept surroundings, a beach where you can roast yourself and the possibility to partake in Water sport activities, then you should seriously consider this place.

Nice resort; located next to Pearl Farm Resort in Kaputian Island. My gripes about this place are: small a/c for the room. Had to ask for a fan (which we got) to cool down the place. Drinks (from the fridge in the room or from the bar menu) are a little outrageous. 100 pesos plus + 10% service charge for a can of SM Light? Even Marco Polo in Davao City does not charge as much! The resort claims that they have a view but you have to be located higher up to enjoy the view. Our cottage's view was blocked by untrimmed plants/trees and the fence on the front of the resort. Also, they need to fix their pier. It is falling apart in places and after a 45-minute banca ride, you want to be standing/walking on something stable. Two eyesores: the resorts' laundry hanging to dry right behind one of the cottages and the houses are that are falling apart right next to the resort. There is wi-fi available but you have to be located high up in the resort to be able to use it. The best part is the outstanding service. You get a guest assistant assigned to you whose job is to make sure that your stay is as pleasant as possible. The food was good and you can order off the menu if they have it. We had a fish dish that was not on the menu and it was very good. Check out the activities brochure as there are a lot of things to do (in and out of water) and are priced fairly. The resort has a lot of potential and it needs to iron out some kinks. It needs to check its pricing to remain competitive in the business. It is NOT Pearl Farm and shouldn't price itself like it.

I must say right off the bat I was truly stunned at the level of service we received. Every single employee was there any time we needed them. Meals were prepared in a timley fashion, food quality was great and the atmosphere, well it is like paradise.

From the moment we arrived we were treated like royalty and we could not ask for a better Resort Assistant than Joel. He did everything we asked of him and then some. He was always well prepared and helped us with anything we needed.

The rooms were very well set up and comfortable. This resort provided it all for us and made our trip a wonderful success. I want to tank all of the Staff at the Hof for a truly wonderful experiance.

The one thing I would recommend with all travelers is make sure you know just EXACTLY what the inclusions are and what is not included. We did have a little confusion there but overall it worked out just fine.

I do recommend the bat cave / falls outing and also the island hopping was very fun and Joel and his assistants were very well prepared.

This was a trip of a lifetime and the wonderful people at Hof Gorie really made this vacation over the top outstanding!! I highly recommend this resort to anyone.

On another note, safety was a concern of mine hearing all these stories of American's kidnapped and other things, I found Davao to be very welcoming and I didnt encounter any issues at all. You just need to be smart about how you present yourself and be aware of your surroundings.

Hof Gorei Resort is worth visiting ( even for solo travelers like me). The place is clean, quiet, and safe; the staff is incredibly attentive ( you get a personal assistant thru out your stay), the food is marvelous -- Western-style is delicious like that of a 5-star hotel & with big portions, too! The owner, April Kroell, is very friendly and accommodating. Nature is just at your doorstep, just make sure you pack some insect repellant.

I stayed for 3 nights at the Round Hut #3 and really, really loved it! Went swimming every morning--- enjoyed having breakfast by the beach. Went adventure-hunting and trekking--- visited Hamigit Falls ( 30 min. motorcycle ride away). Did some shooting (photgraphy, that is) --- lots of birds and bugs to see and scenery, too. Will go back again for sure!

We stayed at Hof Gorei and the resort was well kept and clean. For the price of stay it is OK. But when it comes to the price of their food, It becomes ridiculous. For their price I was expecting to get something that would be serve from a *** restaurant. The vegetables were scarce and not fresh. The cook must just be a regular trained at home. Nothing worth ordering once you tried it. And for a beach resort, We were expecting more on Ihaw ihaw and seafood. Got disappointed again. The owner needs to get rid of the sharp corals on the beach. Did not enjoy the beach at all. Sorry I cannot recommend the place to my friends and families.
