Pearl Farm Beach Resort
Ranked #1 of 8 Hotels in Samal Island
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed June 16, 2012

Pearl Farm Beach Resort is considered the top-of-the-line accommodation in Samal Island, Davao. It's 45 minutes from the mainland unlike the other island resorts, which take just 5 minutes. This location actually works in favor of Pearl Farm, since it's well away from crowds and the whole property was actually tailored so that guests can source everything they want and need right there.

AESTHETICS:
1. Samal is done in tasteful vernacular interior design and architecture. The resort was made by Filipino architect Francisco Manosa, which means you expect intricate native details on your rooms which showcase the unique Filipino culture. There is emphasis, of course, on the culture of Mindanao. It's fascinating to say the least.

2. Amenities and facilities are excellent. There are rooms on stilts; those located on top of a hill (which means you get a panoramic view of the nearby islands); and there are exclusive (read: pricey) suites located on nearby island Malipano. There are newly refurbished modern rooms as well. Each room is designed for the family in mind (most suites are multilevel. Typical suites have two levels--one contains the master bedroom, the other contains extra beds for the kids--all done tastefully. Really large glass windows too for beautiful views. I suggest you get the Samal Suites--the room whose facade was made to look like an eagle's head).

3. Staff are very courteous. Walk all around the resort and each member of the staff you meet along the way will greet you with a smile. It's a small gesture that goes a long way.

4. Food is great too. There's a wide selection of international as well as native cuisine to choose from. There's a cold cuts & sushi section as well. Every night, an acoustic band performs (when we were there, it was a family of singers who serenaded us).

5. The beach on the main resort is a bit short; the sand is coarse; but since you're hardly sharing it with anybody at any given time, it's bound to be a peaceful experience for you. You can take a dip at Malipano's beach too (the resort offers free transfers to the island every 30 minutes. It's just 3-5 minutes away). Kids can engage in fish feeding; you can rent kayaks too; When we were there they were testing a wakeboard facility in Malipano; and there's a shipwreck less than 60m from the shore which divers can have a look at.

6. They also have a spa but we haven't tried that. Average rates of treatments are P2,000.

Room Tip: Book the Samal Suites (just ask for the suites whose facade were tailored to look like an eagle'...

Me and my family stayed here in April and had a great time. This is my second visit to Pearl Farm. We stayed overnight at the Mandaya House. Although some of the amenities are old and needs repair, this is still a great place for relaxation. Staff are friendly! We love the pool next to the restaurant. It has a great sunset view! We'll come back!

Our visit to the Pearl Farm in Samal Island was excellent. Service and facilities were impressive - even starting from check-in at the Marina and throughout our stay. My husband enjoyed snorkelling in the very clean white beaches with plenty of fish, while my sons splashed around in the infinity pools. Buffet spread was delicious. An electronic cart was constantly available for those lazy to walk. Speedboat to the island across was also nice. Service by all the staff was impeccable! Really nothing to complain about. Since access to the resort is limited and strict, you do not feel any congestion unlike other resorts which may feel crowded. Easy to forget the world outside. Truly relaxing.

I was here twice early this year for 2 seminars. Didn't expect much as I knew this was resort is quite old but it was surprisingly very well maintained. From Davao city proper, we were taken to their own port which was also actually a resort with a small pool. Their ferry was docked here and the ride to the island took about 40 minutes. We were greeted by their staff who served cold drinks and the bags were taken to the rooms. We stayed in the rooms on stilts. Although the furniture was dated, the room was well maintained. One thing to complain though are their toilet and bathroom. To say it was small is an understatement and especially the bath area which lacked hooks to hang your stuff. Their grounds are very well maintained. We took a trip to their island property which was 5 minutes away from their motorized 'banca'. The pools were really nice, and one offers some privacy. Their buffet meals were really good and something to rave about.

Will recommend and definitely bring my family here.

t was such an experience staying at Pearl Farm. I got to enjoy 3 of their villas in Malipano island but I guess Villa #3 is still the best for me. It's a paradise that gives value for money. Very Good accommodation, excellent buffet choices! It is a paradise for both outgoing and private people. From massage, fish feeding snuba diving, snorkling, beach volleyball and meditating name it they have thought of what you wanted! Loving the time be in the parola or my room... It was an amazing experience. To the dependable staff, I surely missed Shella who toured me and Gio who gave us the service that is truly world class! Of course who can forget my girl Melanie! Thank you! And yes I will be back!!! Soon!

We boarded the resort's ferry in its private marina a little before 1:30 in the afternoon. I consequently got a headache since we were made to wait for 35 minutes with the boat's diesel engine turned on and diesel fumes blowing towards us. 30 minutes into the pollution assault and with a pounding headache, I stood and asked on the delay's reason: the resort was waiting for a passenger who had just come out of the airport. I couldn't understand why one (late) customer's comfort would be favored at the expense of a boatful of guests. The ferry could have left the marina on time with its boarded guests; meanwhile, the resort could just have ferried its late guest in one of its other boats -- all guests would then be happy. (note: I later learned that the latecomer was one of the organizers for a computer brand's corporate event that was to be held the next day... Do corporate clients take precedence over personal-account guests? ).

After taking a dose of Excedrin and an hour's rest, I began to appreciate the resort's well- kept grounds and very friendly staff. A dip in the pool relaxed us. A supposedly short nap turned into a very long one as we woke up to discover that it was already 11 pm and had missed the buffet. Great thing that room service was available and it was fast and efficient. (note: food is good now since management is new).

The next morning was rushed since we needed to take the 1 pm ferry back to davao city. After a good buffet breakfast, we headed to the aqua sports center. The banana boating was great fun. We fell off the water once but then, that 's where the excitement lies! Though we only snorkelled near the beach it was still great since there was much to see.

We'll be returning to the resort this May-- this time staying for two nights. We hope to snorkel out in a coral reef (reached via a short boat ride) and have one of their popular spa and massage treatments.

I hope this time, the resort from beginning to end will accord hospitality equally among all its guests.

Room Tip: For our april trip we booked directly with the Resort's booking office. For our coming May trip...
