“The most peaceful sleep i have ever had...”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 30, 2013 via mobile

After reading the negative reviews, one might think that this is a terrible place.but being there makes you think otherwise.

The place is very clean and very peaceful.the only distractions that you will experience is from the other guests.

Chema's by the sea is a home.it is not just a resort.the "no food allowed policy" is understandable because this is the owner's home first, resort second.

People who complain about the corkage and policy do not understand that concept.i bet that after they consume the beer and snacks, they will just leave it as is just like on a public resort without any respect for the place.tsk,tsk...

The owner is very hospitable.like the cool Tito you visit every vacation.we had fun having a beer with him talking about anything.

The room we had with my girlfriend was the one directly facing the sea.it is very beautiful,it has cable tv and aircondition, and its the one that has the strongest wifi signal!(but you are on vacation so why need internet?).hot and cold water is available plus rain shower!very relaxing!

Even the pet dog is very hospitable and so cute!you see him walking around the place like a chubby pug resort manager.

The staffs are very accommodating.my girlfriend had her birthday there and the staff bought a cake for her.

The food was delicious!250 pesos sinigang that is good for 3-4 people.and the tuna steak,oh the tuna steak.my mouth is watering again.

There is only one area for improvement.the room we had have leaky roof in the bathroom and in one of the closet.but take note that we had heavy rain during our stay.and a roof leak can be fixed easily.

But even that small glitch does not take away the fact that we had the best time!

Highly recommended if ever you need some peace and quiet.

We stayed at this resort with family. We were inquiring on making an upgrade but what we get is a very frowning face and rude owner thinking we can't afford extra cost for an upgrade. This is an overpriced resort with a pool that is just sea water. Stay away from this resort. Very rude owner, doesn't know the word hospitality.

One of the most relaxing resort for me, I really liked chemas due to how peaceful it is, this place is amazing especially for those who wants complete relaxation, and the transportation to this resort is easy too, just need to contact the resort and they will pick you up, on our first stay on this resort we had a small problem , we had a fight with the owner due to bringing of some food in the resort. and we did not stay overnight as well so just enjoy the beach and it's infinity pool.

On our second visit, which I was treated by a friend,we did not bring anything and we order food on the resort's restaurant and the food was great and it is not that pricey too, it was a bliss staying on this resort. I totally enjoyed my stay on the second time, and we stayed one night as well, the resort is very peaceful.

Oops as a tip, go to this resort if your up to relaxation and dating. But if you are in a group i think this resort is not a good choice. :)

The beautiful traveller's photos of the resort convinced me to book here, in spite of the some negative comments I read, that is why I was guardedly optimistic when we arrived at the resort. The welcome at the resort's jetty was not overly effusive, I was expecting a cold welcome drink and a warm greeting from the resort's staff, but was mildly disappointed that all I got was a half hearted smile and a lukewarm greeting.

The gardens, beach area and accommodations were as beautiful as they are pictured on this site and it was certainly nice to have the added bonus of having a personal butler attend to our needs for the duration of our 3-day stay.

I booked an island tour on my own on our second day, and Samal Island did not disappoint! The island offers many sights that will leave you in awe. We were taken to the Monfort Bat Sanctuary, had a succulent native lunch at a local resto and proceeded to Hagimit Falls and finally to the Maxima Resort where we enjoyed the long slide into the Davao Gulf! It was a beautiful way of spending our second day in the Island.

I was concerned about the mixed reviews about the resort's food but contrary to the negative posts on this site, we actually found the food to be good, although portions could have been bigger for the prices we paid. We had the option of dining outside our Cabana for four overlooking the gardens or in the resort's restaurant. Either way was good depending on one's mood.

The most important part to remember about booking here is that it is most ideal for anyone whose idea of a vacation is peace and quiet, as the resort is inaccessible to the neighboring resorts unlike the open beach atmosphere present in Boracay. There is no nightlife to speak of and the only activities available is to swim at the small but very well maintained beach, lounge outside your Cabana and marvel at the well manicured gardens, curl up and read your favorite book or swim at the free form salt water swimming pool overlooking the Gulf. The option of dining in town can only be had if you hop on a motorcycle for rent in the rear of the resort.

Over-all, it was a good relaxing stay for this family of four who are not really after the rowdy fun to be had at other popular beaches like Boracay or Puerto Galera.

The owner of this resort came to our room and talked to us after an issue about a corkage fee. Instead of solving the issue in a polite manner, he verbally attacked us and did not give us any chance to talk.
The issue started when we asked the staff for the nearest convenience. We returned from the store, carrying our drinking water, cocacola and some beers when the staff asked us to pay the corkage fee. it was about 50% on top of whatever we had bought in the store and for that price we might as well have been drinking in the resort restaurant and saved ourselves some money and the bumpy moto ride to the nearest shop.
I don't mind paying corkage or even pay whatever it cost to drink in the in-house restaurant but the fact that the staff never informed us and actully stood at the gate waiting for us to return so they could charge us, made me complain about the way we had been treated. By the way I have never in my life been to a hotel or resort where you are not allowed to bring your own drinking water for consumption in the room.
By talking to the owner I learned that it is their policies and according to him it is clearly written on their website. according to the owner it's my own problem if I didn't read their website careful enough. (and after double checking their website it turns out that the policy section is no longer functioning which makes it impossible to get this information in the first place). The owner kept on talking nonsense in a very rude manner, not letting us say one word. his behavior was extremely aggressive and we decided to check out the following morning after encountering him. very bad experience!
The owner neglected the fact that no one informed us about corkage fee, he claimed it was out own fault because we never asked when the booking was made. He then said that he would easily buy us all the beers we could drink to which I refused. He was being aggressive and seemed like he could explode it any moment. it was very uncomfortable to stay in the resort after that and that is why we checked out the following morning.
this place does not deserve your time or money.
furthermore I can add that every single table near to the beach has a "reserved" sign on it, which means you are going to pay extra to have your dinner at these particular tables. furthermore it turns out theres a fee of 200pesos to have housekeeping change the towel. this is already a very expensive resort where these kind of things should be included.
they try hard in every sneaky way they can to squeze money out of people. fx. its written on the website that if you are not wearing proper swimsuit you are going to pay 200pesos if they catch you in the pool !!!
the staff are not helpful. the only thing they do is to walk around to try and bust people in breaking their rules so they can claim a fee. This might have to do with the fact that many daytours visit the beach at the resort. But the staff and especially the owner should learn to see the difference of a paying in-house guest and a daytour'er trying to sneak his way in. because that is how he made us feel standing on our very own -paid for room terrace.
Don't ever go there.

besides extremely rude staff, the food is overcooked. there's hardly any vegeatbles in the dishes that comes with vegetables. (about 10 corns and a bitter cucumber)
Ants are everywhere. you can not finish a meal without having ants crawling on your plate.
Waterpreassure in the shower is non excisting. its just dripping out. aircon extremely noisy and can only turn on and off when the plug is pulled out. the control panel and remote does not work at all. staff did not bother finding a solution to that.

We had our third getaway to Chemas last Holy week. Holy week being one of the busiest time for resorts, Chemas never lost its serenity and cleanliness due to the controlled number of guests on the resort per day. For families, couples, people, who want to go quickly to the beach thats not crowded, this is the place for you. Our first visit, we had a day tour... second was overnight w/ family, third was overnight with extended family. Honestly, we dont consider going to other resorts anymore. Kids love swimming inthe pool when lowtide comes at 11am-3 or 4pm. When the sun is not so hot anymore then, tides go back up. If you go swimming in the morning (highh tide) , many of us experienced bites from we dont know what... maybe jellyfish(?)... but its not the resorts fault. maybe those creatures just appear in the morning in any beach...Almost every part of the resort is picture perfect.... Our cabana is very clean, bed is comfy, having our own dining area is great. Each cabana/cottage has its own butler/attendant at a ring of a bell. Their attendants are courteous and ver hardworking too. Imagine the legwork they do with the terrains of the resort, under the heat of the sun. ( well its shady there, lots if trees so maybe not too hot thought)... and they can still manage to smile! Food orders are reasonable and delicious too. Grilled blue marlin, chicken barbecue, onion rings, french fries, halo-halo were our usual favorites. For those bringing cars, theres not much to worry coz you are allowed to park your car at Waterfront insular hotel.... Cant wait to go back!!!!

At first, we were having second thoughts due to all negative comments here. But looking at the pictures, this is the place that my husband will very well approve of. He is very particular to the cleanliness and ambience of the place we go to so I booked the place for us for 3 nights and 4 days. And the resort did not disappoint us. Our cabana is homely and welcoming. We were greeted by nice and polite staffs and yes, we have our own butler. and as soon as we finished unpacking we went down to check the beach. But it was still low tide and they said the water will rise around 3 or 4pm so we sat down and relaxed at the beach side. We saw some maintenance, raking and cleaning the beach, removing corals. The place was very well maintained and clean with nice landscaping. My youngest son doesn't like beaches since he doesn't want his feet dirty but the beach in Chema's has white sands and very clear water that he enjoyed swimming as well. It was very private and the night was very relaxing. On our second day, since we have teenagers, we hopped on another beach to have some drinks and hear live band music. As soon as we arrived, my son said, "Mom, is this where we're going? its too crowded and the water is blurry, not as clear as Chema's." But we paid for the trip and tried to enjoy the crowd. We dipped for a swim and my, the corals wounded my son's feet we have to wear our slippers so our feet won"t get wounded. So we just showered and ate dinner and enjoyed the band playing and went back to our resort, It was good that we tried to go to other beaches and had our own personal experience and comparison. Chema's is heaven compared to other beaches.
We met the owner during our last night at the resort. He is quite a charmer and very nice and he treated us for a couple of beers. We learned he lives on the resort and even met his family. I understood why he doesn't like bringing in food, coz it will mean trash. That is why he kept their food at reasonable price. He maintains the place well, so guests should respect it. If you don't want clean and serene place, Chema's is not the one for you.
