“Nice on the water!!”
Reviewed June 19, 2012

Four of us, a couple and 2 singles stayed at Gede's for 3 nights in Mid May, our 4th visit. The place is excellent and right on the beach. The staff and restaurant are great and the rooms are all that you could ask for at the price offered. The location is wonderful~ close to the early morning dolphin boats and night fishing events, the Buddhist Monastery, the Hot Springs, and Menjangan Island. It is an easy drive up to Pura Danu Lake Temple, GitGit waterfall and also the rice paddies of Pupuan. We will be back again and again!! Beach Bum Bill

Room Tip: Gede is building some new rooms 'upstairs' and the view should be amazing! The restaurants i...

This is not a 5-star place, but this is a very high value place, and Pak Gede and his family are extremely helpful to satisfy your every need. We especially enjoyed the private tours, and our participation in a family religious ceremony. See http://javaorbust.blogspot.com/2012/06/temple-ceremony.html

Room Tip: we had the only room with a bathtub. Worked just fine for aching muscles after a climbing the stair...

Picked up late at night by Mr Made from the Airport. Very efficient with a fascinating drive through the centre of Bali in the dark.

Mr Gede made us welcome & pulled out a few bottles of cold Bintang to help us adjust.

Aircon room for 20k. Fine, nice balcony. New upstairs rooms being built which I was given a tour of. Look great. Will be 30k I think.

Unlike other reviewers I was very disappointed with breakfast, which led to me not eating in their cafe.

Dolphin trip was cool, though once spotted, there were 30+ boats chasing these amazing beasts. Had to ask myself how exploitative this is? Also verging on dangerous. The boat operators aggressively vie for position once Flipper & his mates have been spotted.

The area around the homestay is very quiet. Dining options are extremely limited & very much geared for western tastes.

All in all though a fun few days despite the unseasonal heavy rain.

Mr Made picked us up again to drop us down to Ubud, with lots of stops for photographs.

We loved Gede Homestay and plan to go back there this year. We booked online from Australia and had no trouble at all with the arrangements. We travelled with our friends and we're all in our 60s. We had large, clean rooms which were airconditioned, with plenty of storage space, clean linen and an ensuite bathroom . We loved the fact that we could walk straight onto the beach - and the restaurant was right on the beach. Our breakfast was included in the amazingly cheap price and we were able to enjoy delicious fresh fish barbecues in the evening.
The family that run the homestay are really beautiful and nothing is too much trouble for them.
Gede, the patriarch, plays the gamelan. He and his friend put on a wonderful performance for us on our final night. We were able to use the pool at a hotel a little further along the beach as long as we bought a drink, so we spent many happy hours relaxing there. Gede Homestay is real value for money.

Small family run homestay, right by the beach, wonderful view of the beach and sea from the restaurant which is at the seafront. It’s in a quiet end of Lovina where there are very few people trying to sell you tourist trinkets.

We got a really good welcome here. The family all like to sit and have a chat with you.
Bit of sales pitch on their tours when we first arrived but to be expected.
We went on the sunrise dolphin tour and saw the dolphins, along with quite a few other boats.

Low season 150,000rp for fan rooms, 200,000rp for aircon. All have hot water
Aircon rooms are bigger and a bit nicer, they have a double bed and a single bed so good for families.
Lovely terrace outside all rooms with 2 chairs and a table – nice place to sit and read your book.
Old bathrooms, bathroom floor tiles could do with a good scrub. Good shower pressure. Sheets and towels old but clean. All as you would expect for the price.
They are building 2 new rooms upstairs and will be great when finished.
Aircon rooms have wardrobe with a few hangers, fan rooms just a cupboard but both have lock and key for your valuables. All rooms have a big mirror in the bedroom as well as old tatty one in bathroom, hooks on wall, 1 electric socket (takes French power plugs)
A/C units are modern with remote temp control. Table with shelf under for your things.
Some of the tables are covered with nailed on plastic which could really do with replacing.

Restaurant cheap and cheerful. Inclusive breakfast fairly limited but you can of course buy extra or just have a bigger lunch.
Their Gado-gado is the best we have tasted on Bali – cooked mixed vegetables with tofu and a boiled egg covered with plenty of delicious peanut sauce and a portion of steamed rice.

The beach is black volcanic sand, Gede keeps their bit swept clean every day and the other homestays do this too. Areas where there is no homestay are just left with debris.

You can swim out straight in front of the homestay where it is just sand. Turn right if you want to snorkel and there are rocks and coral and a few fish. Further out about 100 metres diagonally right there is more. Large bright blue starfish that look unreal on the bottom.
Sadly there is quite a bit of rubbish on the sea bed in the shallows. You would not see this unless you are snorkelling. It is not the fault of the homestays, people in the mountains throw their rubbish in the ditch and it is carried down into streams and into rivers and finally into the sea.

We stayed in the cheapest room, for 120,000 a night, with just a fan and cold water and it was as to be expected for that price - very simple, just a bed really and a little lock-up cupboard and a tatty bathroom, but this was offset by the lovely beachside restaurant, cheap food, and sunbeds right on the beach.
There isn't much shade to lie in in the afternoons, and beware the super feet-burning black sand, but we had a nice day just lying about listening to the waves (the sea is very calm here, more like a lake, but don't expect turqoise waters) and the staff are all friendly and helpful if you need a scooter etc.
Breakfast is OK for the price - just toast or pancakes and tea/coffee.
Would stay again.

Room Tip: Cheapest room is ok for the price but thin walls, and a bit grubby, a bit of motorbike noise from t...

Gede is the friendliest hostel owner I have met. We were treated throughout our stay as if we were family friends, with someone always on hand to help us out. The hostel is right on the beach and is a glorious place to watch the sunset with a Bintang or two.
