“A short break from Nairobi”
Reviewed August 26, 2013

Our weekend break in Ol Tukai was extremely good value for money.
We booked through Phoenix Travel in Village Market.
There were 6 of us in 3 apartments. 4 adults and 2 "young" adults.
Accommodation was very clean.
Only thing that stops me rating the lodge as excellent was that the buffet food at dinner was uninspired. That said, breakfast omelet was very tasty and cooked to order.
View of Kilimanjaro was impressive.

Room Tip: Try to get a room directly looking onto the park rather than second row.

Ol Tukai is good value in terms of accommodation and fact that it is full board. The view is amazing - across the plains with animals everywhere and they come quite close to the camp. Food was disappointing and alcohol was expensive but really for a family holiday it is ideal. We also stopped in at our favourite - Tortilas - as beautiful as ever - always more expensive up front but for adults wanting that special time away is a must.

Room Tip: Rooms with elephant view because Kiliminjaro not always guaranteed to show through the clouds

I write in that sequence because I still have an overall positive feeling about this place.
We visited OTL this weekend as a family of 3.

The Ugly
It feels a little grubby from a money point of view.
They have wifi, but you need to shell out USD 4/hour. That seems odd in a place like this in today's day and age. Most of the resorts I have stayed in Kenya either don't have wifi or it is free.
A game drive costs USD 80/per head. On its own it is not a big amount, but the fact that they charge you per head than by drive/vehicle is where it gets a bit nonsensical. All places charge by vehicle. So you get charged say USD 100/per vehicle and it will take people for the capacity. So if you are a family of 7 (and your vehicle can take 7) you pay USD 100/and not USD 560 as OLT charges. That makes it very, very expensive.

The Bad
The food. The range of food, for vegetarians is appalling. On day 1 for lunch we had some mixed vegetables and matoke. That was it. At night it was a bit better with a pasta station added. Breakfast again was rather limited. Again one doesn't expect this to be a a 5 star hotel from a food perspective, but I have stayed in cheaper places that are 'chains' that do better food.

The Good
Ah there are so many goods.
You've read everything here in other reviews already.
Firsly it is located inside the park so if you have your own vehicle you can step out any time to view the animals.
Rooms are big and spacious.
Plenty of hot water. (Remember to turn on your geyser switch!!)
Large open green spaces.
Nice pool.
We stayed in the elephant view room and all day we say elephants, impala, wildebeests, hyaenas and so on wandering on the horizon. We even saw a hippo and 3 lions!!
The sunrise over the plains is spectacular.
Staff are very courteous and helpful.
And there are birds of varying types, and baboons on the property.
As we drove back out we stumbled across a herd of elephants and spent a wonderful 30 minutes watching them gently cross the road not more than 10 metres from us. Really special.

Overall this was a great experience. I don't have experience of other properties to compare but from a location perspective this is a gem. However, unlikely we'll be back here.

Room Tip: We chose an elephant view room as we could see the animals and get the sunrise directly in the room...

Wow! We were very impressed with this lodge. It is a beautiful, upscale lodge. It is spread out in small cabins throughout the large property. We arrived to a warm welcome facecloth and a glass of juice. We were then given a quick introduction briefing before being escorted to our rooms. Our first impression was very good. The lodge and grounds are beautiful. There is a rustic double level bar area to enjoy before or after dinner drinks. There is a spa area and the massages were great. The lobby area offers many comfortable seating arrangements and offers free wi-fi, so we were able to email home, use facebook, etc. with no problems. The rooms are really nice. We had a big king size bed with a really nice design for the mosquito netting which is pulled around the bed during the afternoon turn-down service. It makes the room/bed look so romantic! The bathroom is really nice and it had hot water throughout the day and night which was different from our last lodge which only offered hot water at various times throughout the day. This lodge does not have a watering hole, so the animals are not nearly as close as they are at other lodges but you can still see many animals off in the distance. You have to be careful of monkeys at this lodge. They love sugar and they may try to enter your room. While we were there a monkey got in to one family’s room and went through a bunch of their stuff. They managed to lock it in the bathroom and then came to the front desk for assistance in getting it out!

Winfred, the hostess at the restaurant and Jackson, our waiter, were great – Winfred seated us both nights and always greeted us by name upon arrival at the restaurant. Jackson was good and funny! The food was delicious! The made to order pasta cooking station was so good and the chef working at it was really friendly and funny! The drinks are strong – we ordered a long island ice tea and it did us in for the night!

This lodge had several Masai tribe members working there and they were willing to have their photos taken with you. Every night, a campfire was started and it provided a nice, warm location to sit around.

Overall, we really enjoyed this lodge and would highly recommend it.

I prefer a small lodge when I travel in east Africa, but based on reviews here I picked Ol Tukai for a spur-of-the-moment two-night trip to Amboseli with my two teen-age sons. We weren't disappointed. We didn't have the best weather - we got only fleeting glimpses of Kilimanjaro while we were there - but there isn't much you can do about that.

Hospitality begins as you pull up and is consistently great throughout the property and stay. Warm, friendly, gracious. Up to the point of being fawned over without crossing the line into obnoxiousness.

We had adjoining rooms on the Marsh View side of the lodge (Mountain View is the other). The rooms were quite a ways from the lodge. We liked that, but you should ask for rooms close to the main lodge if you don't like a bit of a stroll. Rooms are very large and nicely appointed. Hot water was a little dodgy.

The food was typical of the Serena/Sharova-type hotel and lodge chains. Good and plentiful. Nothing that will blow you away, but a nice variety with a few pleasant surprises thrown in. The service in the dining room and bar was really exceptional.

The lodge is perfectly situated to explore Amboseli. We had our own driver/guide so I can't tell you how the lodge's services are, other than that seemed expensive at $60 per person per 2-hour game drive. The grounds are beautiful and there's a nice pool we took advantage of in the afternoons. Sitting by the pool with a cold Tusker while watching elephants and zebras graze less than 100 yards away is a hell of a way to spend an hour or two.

Just outside the park there is a Maasai village you can visit. I have mixed feelings about that sort of contrived cultural tourism, but I thought this one was good enough to overcome that.

Room Tip: If the weather is clear, ask for a Mountain View Room. If you opt for the Marsh side, ask for one di...

My best 3 nights of safari and relaxing. Great hospitality by all staff and unbelievable number of wild animals sighted during the 3 nights stay. Great 'nyama choma' as well. Waking up to watch the elephants graze was my best experience.
