Lovely rooms though we needed a triple and got a roll-away shoved into a double room (watch your toes!). Buffet was fresh. Pretty cool having the Maasai locals around to protect you from the black faced monkeys. We were lucky enough to see lots of elephants and get a full day with Kilimanjaro out but don't bet on it!

We stayed at several excellent serena lodges during our time in Africa and although this may have not been the biggest or perhaps the most plush, it was certainly the most friendly and welcoming. The staff were outstanding! The rooms were lovely and the food was great, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay there and would happily return. We particularly liked the little monkeys that ran around the place and although you didn't really have any view from your room the service and atmosphere certainly made up for it!!!

  • Liked — The wonderfully friendly staff
  • Disliked — no view although we didn't really mind about that
  • Tips/Secrets — Take a deep breath before jumping in the pool its very cold!!!!

Within the context of Kenya all lodges have a high standard to live up to and the Amboseli Serena is presently only average amongst them. The rooms are quite small and the bathrooms are OK, but their real drawback is a complete absence of a view. One of the selling points of Amboseli for many people is the wonderful view of Mount Kilimanjaro not only can't it be seen from any of the rooms but it can't really be seen from the lodge itself.

There is a major refurbishment/rebuilding programme going on which might address this particular issue.

There are many plus points. The food is excellent at all times with great variety coupled with freshness. Service is both friendly and excellent also. The position is also very good indeed for access to the gane park, which is also first class. For any birdwatchers, of which I am one, this lodge is recommended for position alone. I would happily stay here again.

This hotel was the frst lodge I stayed in on my Safari. My room was great. The velvet face monky's were fun to watch. They ran around as if they own the place. Plenty of signs that read don't feed the monkey's. The service was wonderful. They did take USD as currency. Didn't have an ATM but would cash Travelers checks. The do offer laundry serivce if you stay two nights or more. The view from the bar area was wonderful. The did offer spa services. like Massage salt rubs etc.

The prices were very cheap. For a on hour massage it was only 37.00 USD. You can't find that rate in the U.S. The food wasn't bad. At times the meat dishes were a bit over cook. They did offer a good selection of food for all diets. They did have a theme night on one of the nights. Their homemade bread was really good. The keys to the rooms were a real pain. They were mini clubs. Hard to put in a pocket of a pair of pants. You have the option of leaving your key at the front desk when out on Game drives. The staff is always at the drive way with a hot towel to wipe your face when coming back from a game drive. I would stay here again..

We stayed here for two nights as part of a safari. We felt that the lodge was not up to the standard of other Serena lodges we stayed at during our trip. The accommodation is, by other Serena standards, rather basic, has no outlook and is not particularly well appointed. Rather narrow single beds in our chalet didn't help - I'm, shall we say generously proportioned and spent part of the night resisting the risk of falling out of bed. Meals are served in more of a dining hall than a restaurant and food is standard Serena fare and could be better (Oh for sausage and mash). High spot is the outlook from the lounge areas, where you can see animals passing by just outside the boundary wall in an area floodlit for the purpose. The orphaned zebra was a hit as well - do hope that it survives. OK for one or at most two nights, but suspect that other lodges at Amboselli might be better, at least from the guides comments.

As some of the other reviews have mentioned, the main reason for disappointment with this lodge is that it sells itself as 5 star accommodation, and it is far from that. Understandably safari lodges aren't anything like hotels, but I would have expected an adequate bug screen on the windows of the hut, and maybe a fan.

The outside seating area was a great place to have a late night drink and watch the animals.

I'm glad this was the first lodge stop on our safari, because we didn't know what to expect from Serena lodges - we stayed in 3 more after that, and they were all absolutely outstanding.

Serena Amboseli is disapponting in this context, but nevertheless very charming. It has a real 'home-made' feeling to it.

I could have done without the Masai bloke standing outside my window when I got out of the shower in the morning though!

We stayed here one night during our 8 day trip. It was very hot that day but the night cooled off rather well. The rooms were small and not much ventilation during the day. Everything was clean and the staff was very nice. Beware of the monkeys. We had our door open for a breeze and almost had 3 monkeys walk in! The food here was good also. It's a small lodge but seemed to be popular.
