Amboseli Serena Safari Lodge
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed February 4, 2013

This was the last stop on our two week safari, and we really can’t find anything negative to say. Rooms are a bit small, but nicely furnished with African themed wildlife murals on the walls. The king sized bed was comfortable and had netting. Hot water bottles were furnished at night but not needed as nighttime temps were warm. The heavy, white robes were a nice touch. A second supply of bottled water is delivered in the evening, which was unique in our experience. The lodge exterior gives one the impression of native village dwellings amidst a beautifully landscaped garden. In fact, the entire property is kept immaculately trimmed with beautiful native plants. There are great views over the savannah with a wide variety of animals being sighted. Unfortunately, there is not a view of Kilimanjaro from the lodge grounds but there’s a good view right outside the entrance gate. Our view was obscured by clouds about 95% of the time, but we did get an occasional glimpse of the snow capped peak - not the lodge‘s fault.

Meals are served buffet style in an attractive, multi-roomed dining area. We had a lovely view over the pond which was lighted at night. The food is excellent and choices abound. There were always several meat choices and vegetarian preparations galore. The creamed soups that were served at the table, were outstanding. There was also a chef station providing a cooked-to -order preparation of the night’s specialty.
Champagne was served gratis at breakfast the first morning. The wait staff was attentive, helpful and friendly. In fact, everyone we encountered had a “jambo” greeting and a smile on their face.

There are several outdoor lounges along with an attractive bar area. Unfortunately, all but one of the outdoor seating areas allowed smoking. The pool is good sized and there were plenty of lounges, tables and umbrellas. The gift shop has a good variety of native crafts and the folks who work there, go out of their way to be helpful. There was also a business center with computers that could be rented for a minimal amount.

We couldn’t have chosen a nicer place in which to spend the final days of a most memorable trip.

Went on safari with JT Safaris and this is one of lodges we stayed at. Everything about it was brilliant. It is immaculately clean and the food and service is second to none. The ambiance is very relaxing. It is the most wonderful experience to sit and relax with a drink and watch the animals pass by. You have to go to appreciate what it is like.

With the amazing Mt Kilimanjaro as the dominant backdrop for the Amboseli Game Reserve, the Serena team somehow built their very lovely Amboseli Game Lodge without a view of the mountain. This might be one of the more curious architectural mistakes I have ever witnessed.

The Amboseli Serena is a fantastic facility offering the experienced traveler just about everything they could wish for - nice accommodations, good food and even business and meeting facilities.

We were treated very well and enjoyed this lodge a bunch!

I can only wonder what a view of the mountain would have done for those times sitting with a cool drink in the afternoon or early evening...

Amazing place, great service. The food was good and the ambiance very relaxing. Lots of elephants, zebra, monkeys galore and the sounds of hyenas deep in the night. Also a wide variety of bird species in the park. The lodge at night is almost magical with a nice view point of the park and a cluster of trees. Elephants and other wide animals walked right up to the hotel at night, what a way to enjoy a beer after dinner :)

Wow !! The food is excellent !! From a great salad spread, open air ar be que's on the terrace for dinner with views of passing elephants. The food is beyond doubt or reproach in terms of quality, variety. And determination to please the guests. The staff are very friendly, decor is unique. The rooms though spacious and clean, could do with a revamp of some hapiness.. Maybe its just the theme !!. Every nite you have a lone gutarist serenading you while you sip your night cap. You are spoiled for desserts and they do special requests for meals toplease you. Don't think twice !! We loved it !!

Amboseli National Park was one of my favorite parks in Kenya and the Serena Safari Lodge was a nice compliment to our visit. This lodge does everything well - the rooms are updated and comfortable, the grounds are well cared for and the dining is excellent. The dinner buffet is served outside in a beautiful setting and the food selection is very good. Like most African lodges, their only failing is in handling the drink orders at dinner. Their servers need more training, both in taking and understanding what you want and in presenting the bill. To be chased down like a deadbeat by a server waiving an unpaid bill is not my idea of high-class dining.

The room decorating was very nice and although the ceiling fan seemed to be misplaced - not over the bed - it did its job; at least in November. The balcony is especially nice and we enjoyed taking our morning coffee here - just be aware of the agressive monkeys who think nothing of coming up and stealing food.

As far as room location - all of the rooms are on the first level and extend away from the central building in several arms. I could not see a reason for recommending one room location over another, except for closeness to the lobby. Like most Kenyan lodges, pathway lighting is at a premium, so finding your way back from dinner can be tricky.

The lounge was particularly nice, with a great outdoor setting and good service. Overall, this was a great place to stay.

Room Tip: All rooms appear to be pretty much the same, so go with one close to the lobby.

Had a great time at Amboseli. Variety and quality of the food was good. smiling and helpful staff made it a pleasure.

Was my second time there , first being on company business and this last one with the family.
the only thing that was missing was a telly in the room. Yes i know one goes to get away but the option would have been nice especially when you have kids.

The pool is a nice place to hang out when its hot and my daughter had a great time splashing about as the Mrs played games on the tablet.

Game drives were interesting and there were plenty of elephants, buffalo and all types of antelope. Lions were not easy to see.

Drinks are expensive bordering on extreme and with a beer at a about three fifty and whisky etc at obscene prices. However for the teetotaler there was a free tea bar with all kinds of beverages and cake (albeit cheap cake)

Overall the place was good, no issues with water , mosquito nets etc (which is common in other lodges), everything was super.

Room Tip: request for a room near the main hotel. we were quite a distance away and had to walk quite a bit fo...
