“Great place to stay”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 1, 2012

We stayed at Amboseli Lodge for two nights after been driven down from Nairobi in a safari jeep hired just for the two of us. The views of Kilimanjaro were fantastic when approaching the lodge through the park and there was plenty of wild life to be seen. We stayed in a room that was facing the park with great views. The room was spacious enough, a double bed with mosi nets, mosi spray and torches came as standard (although we did not have to use them). Sure no tv or mini bar- but who cares? With elephants, zebra, antelope and monkeys on your doorstep who needs a tv? It was full board with three buffet style meals a day. The food quality was okay and plenty of it with a good selection. The bars were fine and we sat out watching the animals in the surrounding savanna. The staff were friendly, courteous and attentive. Out on safari we saw lions, elephants, hippos, zebra, all kinds of antelope and birds and hyenas. Not forgetting the Masi's cattle. The stay was great. Highly recommended.

Room Tip: We asked for a park facing room. If you don't like a two minute walk to the restaurants ask for...

This facility is located within the grounds of the reserve. There is easy access by small aircraft from Nairobi with a short bumpy ride by Range Rover to the Lodge. Our guide/driver for our 3 day stay was well educated in the animals, ecology and habitats of the animals and areas near the lodge. The lodge itself is an inviting facility with a friendly staff, well cared for grounds and excellent buffet choices. Rooms are clean and well maintained. Of the 3 parks/reserves that we did visit during our 10 day holiday, the roads were the best of the 3. If you do not appreciate open air and some seat bouncing this is not your type of holiday. The animals provide excellent photography opportunities as they do daily walks for food and water and near the roads for viewing. The optional(additional cost) evening meal under the stars with a native presentation and dance is well worth the added expense.

We were at Amboseli Serena for a planning session for 3 days with a group of 30 or so colleagues. Located 36 KM inside the Amboseli park we saw some lions, elephants, buffaloes monkeys n other herbivores on our way in . Reception was amazing . Food exception. The staff was helpful ,engaging and kind . We did not get to see more carnivores in the game drives other than a thieving hyena. Mt. Kilimanjaro looks majestic and inviting from Amboseli Serena, no wonder I gotta climb it sometime next year.

Great place, the rooms are small but very cozy. The territory is groomed and extremely clean. There's no view from the rooms but you can sit on the terrace and watch the enimals pass by. Yes, no tv and fridge but this is not something you need in a place like that. Champaign for breakfast and commentary wifi is a pleasant bonus. Highly recommended.

This is a beautiful resort. Our room was fantastic, all staff were fantastic and helpful. The restaurant was wonderful, the best food we experienced in Kenya. The swimming pool was very nice and the best part of our stay was sat around the bar area after dinner with a beer when an elephant and a hyena walked past, within 25 feet of us. Magical!

As with all the 10 properties we used on a tour of E. Africa, we are torn between evaluating them campared to other E. African properties (where this one fares very well) or compared to American/European/Asian hotels, where the comparison is poor. The Amboseli Serena is almost the opposite of other Serena properties we used (Manyara, Serengeti, Ngoro) in some respects - the rooms here had NO view (while the bar/restaurant had great views of the water hole - elephant, gazelle, etc frequent), but the rooms were more comfortable and had better lighting for reading. amboseli is noted for views of Kilamanjaro, which are spectacular, esp with the elephant and hippo, etc, presence. Unfortunately, the great mtn cannot be seen from the lodge. Our buffet dinner was perhaps the best of the trip, though breakfast average. Staff friendly and helpful - unlike other Serena lodges in Tanzania we used, Amboseli was willing to leave room/bar charges in Kenyan shillings for our charge card, instead of converting to dollars at unfavorable exchange rates as was done in Tanzania.
There is no safe in the room; the bed was very comfortable for us, and the room was very quiet, and clean. Bar prices seemed higher than other Kenyan hotels. Road out to west (on way to Tanzania) awful. If solely comparing to other Kenyan properties, would give 4* easily.

W spent two days and one night at Serena - lovely to see huge herds of elephants at sunrise (and at all other times) and the mighty Kilimanjaro. Amboseli is much drier compared to the Mara - the heavy winds, the red robed masais from a distance make good Kodak moments. The cottages were beautifully painted, with lovely masai bead themed lampshades and other accessories, including a spear for a curtain rod. The painted gourd light shades over the bar and the masai neck pieces behind the main bar was such a wonderful idea too. We were spoilt with the food choices - Kelvin, who was mostly on duty in the restaurant, for the 2 days that we spent there made sure we were well taken care of. Continental food choices were good for all meals and breakfast was particularly good with fresh choices of fruit and juice. I was thrilled for my mother, who is strictly vegetarian. At night times, the dim lighting was wonderful to sit out in the open and watch elephant families and gazelles pass by. Bar and a musician who also adds a personal touch to the evening. That was a wonderful, unforgettable sight. I would go back -NOW!, and would stay perhap for 3 days-2 days to go for game drives and a day to spend in Serena itself.
