Amboseli Serena Safari Lodge

As with all the 10 properties we used on a tour of E. Africa, we are torn between evaluating them campared to other E. African properties (where this one fares very well) or compared to American/European/Asian hotels, where the comparison is poor. The Amboseli Serena is almost the opposite of other Serena properties we used (Manyara, Serengeti, Ngoro) in some respects - the rooms here had NO view (while the bar/restaurant had great views of the water hole - elephant, gazelle, etc frequent), but the rooms were more comfortable and had better lighting for reading. amboseli is noted for views of Kilamanjaro, which are spectacular, esp with the elephant and hippo, etc, presence. Unfortunately, the great mtn cannot be seen from the lodge. Our buffet dinner was perhaps the best of the trip, though breakfast average. Staff friendly and helpful - unlike other Serena lodges in Tanzania we used, Amboseli was willing to leave room/bar charges in Kenyan shillings for our charge card, instead of converting to dollars at unfavorable exchange rates as was done in Tanzania.
There is no safe in the room; the bed was very comfortable for us, and the room was very quiet, and clean. Bar prices seemed higher than other Kenyan hotels. Road out to west (on way to Tanzania) awful. If solely comparing to other Kenyan properties, would give 4* easily.

W spent two days and one night at Serena - lovely to see huge herds of elephants at sunrise (and at all other times) and the mighty Kilimanjaro. Amboseli is much drier compared to the Mara - the heavy winds, the red robed masais from a distance make good Kodak moments. The cottages were beautifully painted, with lovely masai bead themed lampshades and other accessories, including a spear for a curtain rod. The painted gourd light shades over the bar and the masai neck pieces behind the main bar was such a wonderful idea too. We were spoilt with the food choices - Kelvin, who was mostly on duty in the restaurant, for the 2 days that we spent there made sure we were well taken care of. Continental food choices were good for all meals and breakfast was particularly good with fresh choices of fruit and juice. I was thrilled for my mother, who is strictly vegetarian. At night times, the dim lighting was wonderful to sit out in the open and watch elephant families and gazelles pass by. Bar and a musician who also adds a personal touch to the evening. That was a wonderful, unforgettable sight. I would go back -NOW!, and would stay perhap for 3 days-2 days to go for game drives and a day to spend in Serena itself.

We enjoyed a two night stay here, set in the middle of lots of animals. The Lodge was clean, had a great atmosphere, good food, helpful staff. Our room was small with a small bathroom, but it was very clean and adequate. The room overlooked many monkey's playing, even coming onto our patio. We enjoyed the tropical setting of the pool area, which looked out onto a vast area of elephants, zebras, etc. The staff even cleaned our shoes after we had been to a Maasai village and they had warriors warding off the monkeys, keeping them mostly at bay. A really neat place to stay

Great resort, unique so near the Kilimanjaro and in the middle of the park. We made 2 gamedrives and had dinner with the Masai. The lodges are wonderful, with a nice view directly on the elephantpool, people are so nice, great service. We haven't seen the big 5. But nevertheless it was unforgettable weekend.

We stayed here for the 2nd night of our safari and it is an excellent lodge. From our room we saw lots of wildlife - elephants, zebra, deer etc etc!
The lodge itself is of a very high standard. The rooms are excellent as is the food and the staff are very friendly. There is a very good atmosphere in the lodge and we were very happy to sit and have a nightcap after dinner and just soak up the atmosphere.
The monkeys can be a nuisance but the keyring is a huge wooden 'club' which you can use to frighten them. The staff are pretty good at keeping them at bay though.
The safari on the way to this lodge in Amboseli from the previous one in Tsavo West brought us a sighting of a leopard and not long after that a cheetah - 2 amazingly beautiful creatures.
Amboseli also has an abundance of elephants.

WOW! The location is right in the middle of the park, the hotel has a cute African camp set up and the rooms where impeccable. With each room having a balcony, you can see wildlife passing by. Great food provided 3 times a day and very friendly staff to make you feel at home. Swimming pool in the middle of it all and amazing views from the viewpoint over the park

This is a nicely located lodge, slightly off the group of lodges (Sentrim, etc) bunched together. This gives it a slightly more secluded air. The central sitting area has a provision for a campfire and the resident guitarist (the songs across all the lodges we stayed in seemed to come from a common source!). This looks over a vast grazing area beyond a small fenced-off area - you can spot a variety of gazelles, waterbucks, zebras and elephants with a basic pair of binoculars. Though the vervet monkeys can be a hassle - keep your food and drink close and your long-handled room key handy to scare them away - the experience of an elephant entering the grounds to graze less than 10 feet away is fascinating. This is in spite of the fact that one sees so many elephants in Amboseli that you can almost be forgiven if you get blase about it.
Our room had a sit-out porch - they recommend that the screen doors be kept shut to keep the monkeys away. But it was also a great place to spot birds - malachite kingfishers, grey woodpeckers, etc. The room itself was nicely done with animal murals covering the walls and the ubiquitous mosquito net. Electric mosquito repellent mats as well as insect repellent wipes are provided. The standard bed arrangement seemed to be 2 singles - but the staff quickly put them together when requested.
Meal service can seem a tad rushed; seating in some of the alcoves off the main buffet area did seem a little too close. But the food was good and service very warm and friendly. Like other lodges in Kenya, vegetarian (specifically Indian vegetarian) food was not a problem at all. On the final evening, they put up a barbecue meal outdoors. Do keep an eye out for the complimentary champagne at the entrance during breakfast - you may have to request the Maasai standing there to pour you a glass.
While there are no views of Kilimanjaro from within the resort itself, on a clear day you will not miss it as soon as you come outside the gate - it does tend to dominate the landscape.
Overall, a great stay.
