Rambutan Boutique Hotel
Ranked #5 of 23 Hotels in Lovina Beach
Reviewed June 13, 2012

The 'deluxe' room we had was a bit run down, but still it was a good deal and better than any other hotel in the area. We were here on a moment of our trip that we had to do some extensive communicating for the remainder of our trip and with the home front, but the (paid) wifi proofed to be unreliable. Not worth the frustration of logging in over and over again, only to be thrown out just before you're ready to send off whatever it is you need sending off. You are better off just going around the corner to the Internet café and do it all in one go, if you need to.

We fixed our own "snowy" tv ourselves, but after that we were often left with a blue (sattelite?) screen telling us something in Indonesian we couldn't fix ourselves. Going to the reception would help (they probably reset their satelite box) until the next time the system crashed (often), making watching some great movies a bit of a tedious experience. Alternatively there is a dvd player for rent with a decent selection of movies.

All in all probably one of the best options for staying in Lovina, but our room was in need of a serious upgrade.

Great pool area, middle of the road breakfast.

Thank you for your review. Sorry about the WIFI cutting of like it was during your stay but we were having teething problems with it. Yes we do charge for the convenience to have a WIFI connection anywhere in our large grounds of over 1 hectare. The charge is very reasonable and works out at USD1.35 an hour. Due to the size of our place and our few rooms of 24 scattered amongst this area, means we need three phone lines and many boosters to cover each corner. The cost is quite high for a small hotel like ours, so we charge a nominal fee to help cover these costs. Most small hotels and even large ones, will only have a WIFI connection at the restaurant. As you say there are many restaurants in the area that give a free WIFI connection. Regarding your comments about the rooms, well they are regularly renovated and the deluxe rooms are in very good condition and are only 10 years old.

We enjoyed our stay at the Rambutan. It is well situated, the pool by the restaurant is awesome, the room was spacious and clean. The welcome by reception was nice and we were offered a welcome drink at the restaurant. Our superiour room was on the second floor but very close to the locals living behind on the hotel grounds who had their laundry lines right beside the stairs leading up to our room. A room closer to the larger pool would have been better. Wifi connections are not free at the hotel, which strange considering almost all the restaurants and warungs in Lovina offer wifi... for the price we paid for the room, wifi should be included. Breakfast was lovely. We would stay at this hotel again. Try the Apple Warung, on the way to the beach, not far from the hotel for an awesome dinner

Thank you for your review and we are pleased you enjoyed your stay with us. As you say it is probably better to choose a deluxe room out the back near the main pool and restaurant.

We stayed at the Rambutan Hotel with a research team of 5 persons in the queen villa for several weeks in April 2012. We had chosen the Rambutan because of its central, but quiet location in Lovina and its very good value for the money.

The Rambutan turned out to be the ideal place to stay for us: We had enough space to work in the tastefully furnished villa, which the friendly staff equipped with an additional table, the WLAN connection was excellent, and the garden area was usually calm. In our spare time, we enjoyed the wonderful pool or the very good and reasonably priced spa, and also arranged for a three days trip with the experienced and cautious driver of the hotel (which really is an asset in Indonesia!). A variety of restaurants, shops, ATMs and everything else you might need are within walking distance from the hotel. We didn’t go to the beach as often as we had wished, because the water turned murky around noon at least in that time of the year – but this is obviously nothing the hotel could change. We therefore only went swimming in early morning before breakfast (which you can choose from a menu and which is definitively enough to feed two persons if you stay in one of the villas).

In sum, this is a great hotel for people looking for a beautiful place to stay with a relaxing family atmosphere.

We stayed in the Rambutan for 8 nights at the beginning of April. The holiday planning started 5 months earlier,as this was just part of a long S.E.Asia trip.First impressions were positive because of the quick informative replies to my questions from Richard(the owner)We booked directly with the hotel paying in advance by credit card under a secure system which saved the hassle and expenses of bank transfers. We were sent lots of info on excursions, airport transfers etc all with prices so that we could make informed decisions.
We decided on the' Putri' villa, which was the right decision!!There was a discount of 10% as we were staying over a week.
We arrived from Ubud and from the first moment it was heaven in this hotel!!It consists of balinese style buildings, some 2 story,a few bungalows etc spread out in well kept gardens with mature trees, winding paths,2 swimming pools, tree house, open sided reception with comfortable chairs, duck pond, decorative water features, spa,(my husband was happy with the massage he had there),their own 'temple'/shrine in the grounds, raised open sided platforms with thatched roofs where you could lounge and read,split-level open sided restaurant and bar.Additional features were 2 computers, books you could borrow(please bring more recent mags if you visit as some of these dated back to 2007),a daily newspaper, sun loungers with mattresses, parasols, plenty of shade if you needed it,childrens' playground, pool table, board games for loan. All of this was like living in an extended Balinese family compound, with staff taking round flower offerings, praying at their shrine, decorating the surroundings with flowers picked off the trees and excellent unobtrusive service.

Breakfast was included for villa guests and consisted of various choices which included a cooked breakfast,or porridge or pancakes, toast or nasi goreng with fresh fruit juices, coffee or teas.It was promptly served but no-one rushed to move you away and on some indolent days I started at 9a.m. and finished at 11; as I was reading the paper or a book.Breakfast is officially served from 7.30 a.m. till 11.00(how civilised is that???)
The coffee is balinese coffee and was delicious,by the pot full.
Another plus was authentic espresso coffee served in the bar during the rest of the day.My husband's holiday is not complete without finding a good espresso.

The Putri villa was a detached villa facing the pool and the restaurant, with a front veranda and bamboo furniture. It consisted a large room with big french windows on one side(floor to ceiling nets curtains, and yellow curtains for privacy),a large comfortable bed(slept like logs) fresh linen changed daily,2 pillows each, bedside tables with lamps which were ideal to read by,a sitting area with low table and chairs,as well as being decorated with balinese art and fresh flowers.
The Aircon unit blows straight on the bed but this was not a problem as we set it at 27° when we went to bed.
They was ample drawer and wardrobe space to unpack for a 9 day stay.
Although there are no safety deposit boxes in the room,we felt comfortable in using our locked suitcases;although we had been advised in advance that we could use the hotel safe if we had any doubts.
Also in the room was a medium size fridge stocked with drinks,(payable),facilities for coffee and tea making,a large jug of drinking water which was replenished each day,2 plates and knives and forks. This was useful as we always like fresh fruit in the room and have to have snacks available for my diabetic husband.
There was also a TV and DVD player(DVDS available for rent)
There was printed information sheets concerning costs for the minibar, massage, dvd rental etc in the room.
There was also a hairdryer and Gideon bible.

The bathroom was amazing. The walls are decorated with pebbles in different designs, there was a large wash basin with plenty of surrounding space for toiletries,a sunken bath with shower fixture, and a separate shower which washes you while you stand on a floor of rounded pebbles.A third of the roof is open(over a little garden) and you can sit on the toilet and see the sky and think what you are going to plan for the day!!
There are 2 coloured bath towels and flannels provided each day,and 2 pool towels which you can change at reception when needed. Also shower gel and shampoo provede
There was also a bamboo clothes rail for drying things.
(One of those bamboo ladders which are all the range as towel holders would be a lovely addition as the existing towel rack on the wall was a bit precarious.)

We couldn't have been happier. There were other guests around but none that intruded in the atmosphere, there was no sound from the street,no raucous noise from other properties, and no scrabble for places around the pool.I appreciate that this was low season.
For the time we were there,we had 2 brief showers of rain and the other days were sunny with some cloud, but high humidity. We found it much hotter and more humid than Ubud which we had left the previous week.
The gardens were swept twice a day, lest a naughty leaf stay too long on the ground!!
We didn't eat at their restaurant, but it was nice to know it was there if for example the weather had been wet and we didn't want to go out.
The hotel is situated in a little road which leads down to the beach and there were plenty of cheap eating places in this lane as well as 'happy hours' in restos/bars,travel agents ,souvenier shops and a few minimarts where you could buy extra water etc.
At the other end of the lane is a main road and if you turn to the left you will find a local market that sells fruit and veg as well as reasonable batiks. Also along this main road you get a better rate of exchange although it might be in a shop rather than a bank.

The fact that Richard was going to be away during our stay initially perturbed me,but I am happy to say his Balanese wife Tini was the perfect host. They live on site and are there to say hello or help, but do not intrude.Just the right PR combination you want.Thank you Tini.

We unfortunately were not pleased with the Doctor who is on call.My husband had a high temperature one afternoon and wanted a second opinion. The doctor didn't even have a thermometer with him,nor took my husbands blood pressure. He announced it could be a virus and sent a bill for 70US$ and 10$US for a bottle of cough medicine we didn't need.I thought this was a poor and expensive service and glad that we really didn't have something serious. The doctor spoke English.

As regards Lovina. It has a delightful village feel to it and everyone said hello and was friendly. There is a lot of scooter traffic as this seems the main way to get about. However the black volcanic sands were offputting. There are no sunbeds and parasols on the beach,so you can only sit on the black sand which is almost impossible to shake out of a damp towel.I only saw one couple swimming despite the water temperature being warm, and I asked several people why no-one swam???it seemed sort of ominous,no waves,no sparkle.Several small rivers run down to the sea and the preceding week with storms it meant that all sorts of detrius was washed down to the sea and hadn't been cleared.I was also told that rubbish from Java washes up on the beach.I don't know if in high season there is a cleaner beach policy??
The beach is also very narrow in places with just enough width for the local fishing boats. These boat owners were very pleasant and you can arrange to go our dolphin watching, fishing, sunset cruising and snorkeling with them.

We found 'Bangli' No 38 with boat named 'Sea Walker' to be very obliging.I went out with him on my own for 60,000R (about 6US$) altho the boats can take 5 people.
The dolphin watching means you leave before sunrise at 5.45a.m. and get back about 7.30 depending on how you feel;I saw hundreds on the day I went out, altho 20+ boats with long-tail motors chasing them did not enhance the experience!

However, about 5 minutes by boat from Lovina beach there is excellent coral. The sea was crystal clear, depth of about 2 - 3 metres and absolutely NO human rubbish on the sea floor!!Is this Lovina's best kept secret or what???
Again I went out twice(on my own) with 'Bangli' and he had good masks and flippers all included in the price of 6US$ and also a ladder so that you can get get back in the boat(a major concern for me:!) We went out at 9am and he was quite flexible how long we stayed. It was fabulous;all sorts of coloured fish, blue starfish on the coral and good coral.Well worth doing. There were only 3 boats out at that time which was a sharp contrast to other snorkling ventures(eg Thailand) where you can't move for boats loads of people in luminous life jackets screaming and shouting. It was wonderful!!Do it!!

A driver can be booked through the hotel for longer trips as can dolphin watching at the same price as arranging it directly.

There is always a good sunset to watch from one of the cafes near the beach at the bottom of the road and a pre sunset game of volley ball or badminton to watch played by the locals just by the beach.

The hotel arranged our transfer to the airport which took just over 3 hours. However the roads can be cut by landslides if there has been rain.Allow for this.We paid 500,000 for the car and driver(to the hotel) and the hotel put together a simple snack to replace breakfast as we left before the start of breakfast,so we could eat it on the way.

In summary,if you are going to Lovina, see the dolphins, definitely snorkle and the best place to stay on earth is the Rambutan for that Balinese experience.I didn't find it one bit old fashioned,I found it heaven on earth in the Putri villa.Arrange a sight- seeing prog if you have the energy.Never slept so well.Wonderful staff, and many thanks to the night receptionist who carried my 20 kilos of case on his shoulders to save the wheel damage of rolling it across the cobbles paths!!!Thanks also to the professionalism of Richard running the reservations side!!
Altogether a lovely experience!!!

Room Tip: Various options for different pockets.Putri villa is self contained, large and pool facing if you wan...

We loved it so romantic and beautiful it's the best hotel we ever stayed in
We booked a standard room which was nothing fancy but it was clean!
And we had everything we needed
The surroundings were magnificent like the garden and the swimming pool the restaurant etc.

What we did not like is that you have to pay for internet.
Also when you buy 6 hours you get a password but while surfing the internet automatically logs you out this happens a lot while surfing which was quit annoying

Thank you for your comments and we are pleased you thought it was the best hotel you have ever stayed in.

Regarding the internet we have just recently changed it, so the entire hotel is covered with the Wi-Fi. We are only a small hotel in terms of number of rooms but our rooms are spread over a large one hectare area. So to have a signal covering the whole hotel is quite expensive, as we pay for three different lines to give us unlimited downloads and uploads 24 hours a day covering the whole resort. We charge USD8.00 for six hours of use and you can log off and on, so it is six hours of actual usage and this works out at only USD2.00 an hour.
