Dunston Hall
Reviewed July 3, 2014

We had an absolutely fantastic wedding day at Dunston Hall. From our initial meetings with Sarah and then with Libby to sort out all of the arrangements. The final arrangements were made with Jenny and she made sure that everything ran absolutely perfectly on the day, even making sure that my hair looked ok before I walked into the ceremony. Everything has been done in an extremely professional and very friendly manner.

Our menu tasting evening was fantastic and the head chef and his team did not disappoint at all on the day. We only wish we had come with a better appetite!! Many of our guests commented on the lovely food throughout the day. The trio of puddings went down particularly well!! The Eaton Suite looked perfect on the day and the room turnarounds appeared to work like clockwork.

We did look at alternative venues for our wedding but nowhere came close to Dunston Hall. It was the perfect setting and we were not disappointed in any way. The team at Dunston Hall obviously always do a very good job as people we used for our wedding all said they love working at Dunston Hall.

The weather forecast for the day was not good but we had no worries beforehand about the photos as it is such a wonderful setting both inside and out. Luckily the weather did hold out just long enough to get the photos done outside. The bridal suite we had, we think it was The Birch, was beautiful. Just a shame we didn't get to spend longer there!!!

Dunston Hall holds a very special place in our hearts as it was where we first met back in 1999. We used to be regulars in the gym!! We spent many an hour in the bar after a good workout. My sister's wedding was one of the early weddings held at Dunston Hall in July 1993. The hotel was obviously a lot smaller in those days and had only just been finished being renovated. However the wonderful charm of Dunston Hall has remained, in fact, we would say it is probably better now.

So many, many thanks again to the whole team at Dunston Hall for giving us a truly wonderful day to remember.

This hotel is ideally located to be a base for days out looking at the stately homes and gardens in north Norfolk of which there are many. The building is Victorian so is predominately dark wood and high ceilings. The young local staff are excellent and go beyond their remit to ensure you are well looked after. Bedrooms are comfortable but have no refrigerator and can be hot but have ceiling fans. The disappointment is the bathroom as the shower is over the bath and there is no hand rail to ensure balance. For the older person with dodgy knees there is no way you can take a shower and washing your hair is difficult as the shower is ceiling height and sprays everywhere. One is back to the days of sponging down. Food is good but it is not fine dining as you help yourself to the main course from a good buffet. Grounds are pleasant and full of golfers

Dear CCUP2013

Thank you for taking the time to leave feedback about your stay at Dunston Hall. I am so glad that you found the hall an ideal base for visiting stately homes and gardens in Norfolk. Indeed the hall is Victorian being built in 1859 and over the years has had a variety of uses before finally becoming a hotel in 1992.
I have passed all your lovely comments onto the team and do hope that when you are next in Norfolk you will once again come and stay with us.

Kind Regards
Catrin

This is a beautiful building and setting, with a very good golf course available. However, don't be deceived because the rooms and service aren't up to the same standard. Check in staff seemed indifferent and not particularly welcoming. I had forgotten to bring a comb with me, but don't expect the reception to help. I had to find the leisure centre and BUY a comb from them. We had been upgraded to a deluxe room with a king size bed, but this was irrelevent. The mattress was so soft that we kept rolling into the centre, so the extra space was wasted. The pillows were also very poor, so we had a very bad night's sleep. The TV remote in our room also didn't work and the shower was weak. The service and quality of food in the restaurant was not up to the standard expected and the staff seemed to have little (if any) training. The buffet breakfast was particularly poor, with long queues to get a fried egg, undercooked sausages and cold mushrooms. At one stage, our table was actually cleared while we went to the buffet even though my wife had left a bag at the table. I have stayed in many of these country house type hotels. This must easily be the worst.

My Mum very kindly treated me to a spa day to celebrate the end of my studies and for her to have a pamper after a recent house move. She chose a mother and daughter spa package which included use of the facilities, a beauty treatment and an afternoon tea. We lived locally so decided to try Dunston Hall as we had visited a few times before for meals and special occaisions.

We were asked to arrive at 10:50am so that we could fill out some forms and be shown around the leisure area which included a gym, pool, jacuzzi, steam room and sauna. The pool area was lovely and the water was warm. Our treament was booked for 1pm so we only used the facilities for an hour and a half as we didn't want to use the facilities after having nice aromatherapy oils put on us.

The treatment itself was very nice and the treatment rooms very pleasant. We both had a massage which was one out of 3 treatments we could choose from. Our afternoon tea was booked for 2pm so we were directed to the Garden Terrace room soon after.

We received our tea which included sandwiches, cakes, scones and champagne. As soon as we bit into our sandwich a member of Dunston Hall staff came up to us and advised that we had not paid our bill! My poor Mum, you can imagine her embarrassment at being told something like that with a room full of other diners who could hear the conversation. Despite my Mum giving all of her card details over the phone 6 days earlier, one would assume that payment would be taken at time of booking or at least on the day. The Lilac Room did not mention anything about payment when we arrived and said nothing after having our treatments. My Mum had the choice of using the card details she gave or to go back to the Lilac Room to pay. Thankfully the staff member sorted this out for us so we didn't need to leave our seats but this embarrassing situation would never of happened if communication was better. We finished our tea and left. It sadly put a damper on what was a nice few hours.

The grand drive approach to this grand hotel was the perfect and quaint introduction to Norfolk when we stayed at this Dunston Hall with our visiting Oz friends. The appearance of this splendid hotel really made there day.

The rooms were clean and well decorated although the bathroom in our room was showing it's age. Staff were helpful and friendly throughout our stay and the food over diner and breakfast was really good.

The relaxing ambience in this hotel is excellent and the leisure facilities were first class. More than happy to recommend this hotel and we will look out for offers to go back.

Room Tip: The corridors are long so if you can't walk well ask to be near reception.

We regularly stay at or visit this hotel and we are never disappointed.
We decided to treat ourselves to an upgrade on this occasion and booked a deluxe room in the old building. We weren't really sure what to expect as the website doesn't give specific info for each room but were genuinely surprised when we opened the door...
Not a room but a full penthouse suite! The 'room' had 2 bedrooms, a bathroom, a full kitchen, a dining area for 6 and a lounge area with 2 sofas.
The views were incredible and worth booking the room for on their own merit.
On the negative side, the beds were soft and we rolled together in the middle of the night due to the dip, the furnishings were a real miss match and I get the impression that they were once in another part of the hotel and brought up it furnish by accident rather than design.
The bathroom was probably stunning originally but the shower had seen better days although it was clean and there was plenty of hot water.
I have to admit to moving the furniture around (sorry housekeeping ) as the view over the golf course was amazing and I wanted to sit in comfort by the window to appreciate it.
There were plenty of consumables provided but a basic choice, tea (tetley), coffee (dowe egberts) and hot chocolate (suchet) and the toiletries were good quality though not the Espa products advertised.
Complimentary wifi in the suite was efficient and easy to log on to.
We had afternoon tea in the terrace bar. Super service, lovely manner from the waiter. Plenty of tea and coffee and quality sandwiches. Sadly, the cakes on this occasion were disappointing - we have had afternoon tea previously and the selection and quality could have been better on this occasion. There were 3 bits of lemon cake, chocolate brownies, bake well, coffee cup cakes and cherry scones. 15 bits of cake for 2 people! The clotted cream was good quality but there was no jam :-(
Breakfast was superb as always. Hot food continuously replenished, beautiful thick bacon and tasty sausages. Again the staff here were friendly, polite and efficient. We went down at the busiest time of 9am but we were easily found a table, didn't have to queue for hot food and were given hot tea and coffee promptly.
Reception staff were superb. Check in was smooth and our taxi booking was arranged with a minimum of fuss.
I would recommend this hotel without question. It has a fantastic spa and pool, great golf course, superb treatment rooms and professional staff.
On our next visit we are going to try one of the 4 poster rooms and maybe take part in one if the party nights again. Looking forward to it already :-)

Room Tip: Basic rooms are clean, comfortable and well furnished as you would expect in a 4 star hotel. Request...
