Hotel La Sala de Camos

Certificate of Excellence

We stayed 2 nights at La Sala de Camos in July. We could have stayed more for sure. The Hotel was amazing, a lovingly restored old church rectory about 30 km out of Girona. We drove to the hotel from the airport. The place was difficult to find, but others may do it better than us. The map on the website was helpful.
We were greeted at this very old building by Juan and Sandra our unbelievable hosts for our stay. Although we could not speak Spanish, every effort was made to help us understand things and somehow we got settled and fed a fantastic dinner in the dining hall of this building (very beautiful). The Hotel is a boutique type hotel, much more in every way than we expected. Decor and gardens were immaculately designed and maintained. There are 7 rooms and a games room as well as a nice pool area to relax (with a nice Spanish Beer). Free wireless internet in the rooms, teenagers happy!
The area is popular for cyclists either coming in from Europe or up for the weekend from Barcelona. They come for the good cycling terrain and the wonderful food and atmosphere at La Sala de Camos.
The evening dinner menu was translated by the hosts on a translator for us which was really helpful. We were able to get information and suggestions about attractions in the area. I can recommend the Miniature Museum in Besalu and the Dali Museum in Figueres as things to visit. You'd definitely need a car (or Bicycle) to get around.
This was a lucky find that we would recommend to anyone seeking some high quality rural hospitality.

When you arrive at La Sala de Camos, you are greeted by two gracious hosts, Joan and Sandra, the owners. They treated us wonderfully from start to finish of our stay, which had been intended for only one night and day, but turned into two because we enjoyed the property and hosts so much. The room was spacious enough for us; it was a suite type, but we never used the living area since we were either out and about on the property or sleeping. The hotel is a fabulous hideaway in the mountains and if you didn't know exactly how to find it, a GPS is a great piece of technology to use. When we arrived, Joan (pronounced Joe Ann and is the Catalan version of John) and Sandra prepared us a delicious "snack" of wine, cheese, meats, and a fabulous salad. Dinner was even better and the breakfast is light, but tasty. The tranquil setting is what I enjoyed the most and hearing the rooster crow, from a neighboring property is what I liked the least, but it was a good way to get out of bed and seize the day! A special treat you can enjoy is a 20 minute drive from Camos to the quaint village of Besalu.

I went to Girona (from London) for a weekend of cycling and visiting an old friend. Cycling was great on Saturday (www.gironacycling.com) but friend missed a flight and so I had to fend for myself for Sat night. Gareth from Girona Cycling puts up guests at this local inn. I wanted to stay in the Girona centre and enjoy some tapas and late night dining, but agreed that perhaps staying 20k out from the centre in a restored church / rectory could be interesting and restful after 120k of rolling, climbing riding. The room was wonderful - small, elegant, with sponge-daubed-painted walls in an angelic blue, dark wood floors, a spacious bathroom, best bed ever, free wifi. The garden is tranquil, the pool perfect. The 3-course dinner I had was incredible (20 euro and 10 for a bottle of the best wine). Breakfast was an assortment of breads, sausages, cereals, fruits. The countryside was perfect for cycling one day and trail running the next (hiking is great around here as well with various trails to forts and outlooks). The hosts, Juan and Sandra are wonderful and treated me like family. 100 euro for a luxurious experience including all meals etc was such a treat. Closed in Feb. Go there!
