Giron Chill Out is located about 10 minutes from Bucaramanga airport in the small town of Giron. It's billed as a boutique hotel (it's been recently restructured from a hostel) but it has more the feel of a B&B , (although none of the very good meals, including breakfast, are included in the price.)
From the moment you enter there's a feeling of homey intimacy. A small sitting room, with a TV and a few books to look at, makes a nice place to hang out while you wait for a meal to be prepared in the heart of the home— the pretty, open kitchen that sits in the center of the hotel. Alternately, you can sit at a small bar-style counter or at the single, open-air dining table and watch the preparations while enjoying a soft drink, a glass of wine or a beer.
Our room was one of two that open onto the kitchen area. There are others down short hallways leading to both the front and back of the building. The room was large and clean— fairly simple, but with some interesting artistic touches due to the unique style and imagination of the owners. The bathroom was small, but perfectly adequate and had a unique bowl sink and hand-made brass and copper fixtures that we found delightful.
The room faced a street, which is common in the small pensions throughout the little villages of Colombia. This can lead to noise issues, and should be taken into consideration if you're a light sleeper—perhaps some of the other rooms in the hotel would be quieter. (If you plan to spend any time outside the bigger cities of Colombia, and/or prefer family hotels to corporate hotels, I would suggest ear plugs or a sleeping aid for your trip.)
The woman in attendance when we arrived spoke no English, but summoned a long-term English-speaking guest to help us with the preliminaries. Both women were very genial and made us feel genuinely welcome and comfortable in the surroundings. Later, when we met the owner, Davide, he too seemed very pleased to have us, and spent a good deal of time on the internet and telephone sorting out some sight-seeing dilemmas we were having. During our evening meal, we thoroughly enjoyed an engaging conversation with Davide on a variety of subjects including his family history and the recent renovations of the Chill Out. He's a charming, open, hospitable man, very well suited to the tourist industry. The kind of man whose goal seems to be to provide a setting that ensures your travel experience will be exceptionally personal.
