I visit the Matra mountain region with my wife for a few days maybe every second year. Gyongyos is the closest city, so we usually stay in Hotel Opal.
The hotel was closed until spring 2012 due to renovation and extension. This was our first visit after it's open again and we got a room in the new wing. The room was big, modern, decorated in light colors. There was a 32'' LCD TV with a channels in maybe 8 different languages, including a few in HD and also premium sports channels. The room and the en-suite bathroom were spotlessly clean. The bathroom (with shower) could be bigger, but was more than adequate for us. Free internet access was included in the price of HUF 15000 (double room / night) as was the breakfast.
The breakfast is rather basic with bread, cold cuts and cheeses, hot sausages and eggs, butter, jam, cereals, yoghurt, cold and hot beverages, all of which only a limited selection is offered. There is a drink bar with terace and they serve the menu of the day at dinner, for which you have to sign up during the day, if I understood it correctly. (We really like the Giardinetto d'Italia restaurant in Gyongyos, so we didn't dine at the hotel.)
The hotel has a gym and also some wellness features, which we were offered to use, but then didn't as we've spent the better part of the day on the mountain.
The location of the hotel is not right of the middle of the city, but the pedestrian zone can be reached within 5-10 minutes walk and the main bus station is a mere two blocks away. The hotel has a fenced car park, where we could park our car free of charge.
I'd give this hotel a 4.5 rating, but that's not possible... So all-in-all, putting it in perspective with experiences of the same price range in other cities, I'm gonna give it a 4. But it's a 4 with a high recommendation, as I really doubt that there is better value in Gyongyos. We'll return most definitely.
