Owner description: Just like the sailors of old, you’d recognize this Venetian island by the picturesque pastel-colored houses and buildings visible from its shores. Burano also is famous for its intimate lace, an art its people want to keep alive.

Tiny, serene, dreamy island. I did not eat anything and I did not make any purchases, but it is an unforgettable experience.

We were in Italy on a cruise and our ship was going ton leave venice by 1:00 our second day in port so we decided to take the ship excursion to Murano and Burano. The big surprise to us was how beautiful Burano was. It is not to be missed. As we approached it was explained that each home had it's unique colored roof making the view a rainbow. We were told that Burano is famous for lace but seeing all the lace shops open to the streets, the Murano glass pieces great for inexpensive gifts, and the delicious bakery where pastry was a treat made this a wonderful excursion. The boat trip from Venice was lovely, seeing more of the charted waterways that we had before. I bought lovely lace shawls for gifts and one for myself!

I was one of those rare people that didn't really take to Venice, but once I stepped onto Burano, I was in love. All the houses look amazing and it's fun just walking aimlessly around the island without much of a plan. I was worried at first about getting lost but the island is so small it's impossible. I spent a good 2 hours walking around here before reluctantly boarding the vaporetto back to Venice.

This small island with its picturesque canals and brightly coloured houses is just beautiful and a pleasant relief from the tourist crowds of Venice. We spent about 4 hours here strolling along the canals, cross-crossing the waterways via quaint bridges and visiting a number of the shops selling what Burano is famous for - lace.
Fishermen in their small boats added to the wonderful atmosphere that this island generates. The leaning tower was of particular interest. Opportunities to take photos are plentiful.
After leisurely strolling around the island we capped off a great day with a late lunch at one of the numerous restaurants in the main plaza.
We visited Burano in late September and there were not many tourists there which made our time on the island even more enjoyable. Venice, on the other hand, was overcrowded, at and times quite unpleasant.
Vaporetto service to and from the island was frequent. It is well-worth the trip.

Burano island, just a short ferry ride from Venice is a quaint little fishing village - almost untouched by tourism - It was a joy to wander its streets, observe the lace making and visit the museum - It even has its own "leaning tower"

This is the island where all the houses are painted a variety of fairly bright colours - supposedly so that the fishermen, staggering home drunk after an evening at the pub dont go into the wrong house (many look the same except for the colour) and hop into bed with the wrong wife - well, that's what we were told
