The pictures make this place look beautiful, and it is until you step inside your room. Remember when Don and Betty Draper took Bobby up to camp and hooked up at that motel? That's your room. Unchanged since 1968.
But dark wood paneling aside, the real issue was that the room smelled terrible, like sewage. I came to learn that this is a problem with all of the resorts at Railay as they don't have the infrastructure to handle so many visitors. Had I known this I would not have stayed at Railay at all. The shower had more brilliant orange mold on the caulk than I have ever seen in my life. Not the cause of the smell, but disgusting to look at.
The free breakfast was ok. The coffee was terrible so I bought some on the walking street. We found the staff to be friendly. One day the shower wouldn't drain and the ;maintenance guys came within ten minutes and fixed it.
The best things about this resort were the secluded front porches on the bungalows and the monkeys! If you like monkeys you can watch them for hours. They get quite close to humans. It was also cool not having to contend with motorized traffic. Also, to my surprise the pool at the back of the resort was never crowded, even though it was high season and the beachfront pool was packed.More
