Railay is absolutely beautiful, and I couldn't recommend it highly enough. Providing you don't stay at the Sand Sea Resort.

We stayed one night there in abject misery, and promptly left to stay at the far superior Railay Bay just next door.

Dreadful service, unimpressive and very basic rooms, and to cap it all we were ripped off horrendously at dinner. We ordered a fish barbecued (price by the 100g) - half an hour later someone else's leftovers arrived. They then had the temerity to try and charge us for 700g worth of fish - we saw at best 200g worth.

Thailand justifies it's name of the land of smiles. It's just a shame that they have rip-off places run by jokers. Avoid.

We had a wonderful time at Sand Sea! The hotel is almost directly on the awesome Railay beach - no more to ask for!!!
Bungalow rooms spotless with good private bathroom and shower.

Breakfast not so good, but food is cheap so bying a 2nd breakfast later on was not a problem =)

We decided to treat ourselves but couldn't afford the air-con rooms which are over 2000 baht so we stayed in a fan room for 1350 baht, paying for 4 nights and stayed for 5, so a good deal.
The rooms were a disappointment, in need of a makeover and had a musky smell. The shower was awful - scalding hot then cold. We complained but they were not able to fix the problem so they moved us to an air-con room with twin beds and pushed them together to make a double.
This room was much nicer, but was definitely not the lovely air-con rooms we passed everyday. But we were quite happy that they dealt with the problem quickly and received a better room. All bungalows have a private porch, has lovely garden path leading to the pool and sea.
Prices include breakfast buffet, which you had to fight your way through wasps!
If you have money then go for air-con!
Railay is amazing and definitely worth the visit. Sunsets are stunning.

Sand Sea is located on the best beach in Krabi and for a low budget holiday it offers so much. It is one of 3 hotels on Railay West beach and has a mixed group of guests from backpackers, families, and couples. I have lived in Bangkok for 3 years and it was my first time to Krabi (have been to Hua Hin and Kao Lak) and I believe it is probably one of the loveliest beaches in Thailand. The sand is powder white and fine, and the water is warm. Au Praow beach is walking distance to the right of the Railay west beach past the upmarket Rayavadee Resort (which fronts 3 beaches) and through the caves (!) and makes for a change of scenery. The vista of Railay west is breathtaking and sitting out the front of Sand Sea Resort and enjoying a beach that is normally reserved for out the front of 5 star resort make a stay here an easy choice. Run on the beach in the morning and count the stars in the sky at night.
Ask for an air conditioned room close to the beach (a 200 or 300 numbered room) as the 400 numbered rooms are towards the rear of the resort. Breakfast is OK (not great) - (watch the bees - not flies! - near the jam) but as it is included in the rate it is fine. Go to the "Real Coffee' cafe/bar next door for your coffee - its fine, and they are open from 7am - 10pm. Good food menu too.
Sand Sea has a good/cheap menu and the staff are very accommodating and their English is fine. You will be staying at a basic clean and value for money bungalow style hotel on a little slice of heaven beach - enjoy! You will miss the cool evening breeze once you are home.

  • Liked — Right on the beach
  • Disliked — Slightly tired superior Rooms - go for Deluxe (close to the beach)

The location is awesome, and the food is excellent, however, it's worth knowing a few things about the hotel.

Your best off booking an air-conditioned bungalow - we upgraded and it was everything we expected. We'd previously been in a super deluxe with a fan, and the room was outdated, and monkeys jumped all over the roof all night... but it was cheap so we couldn't be too upset.

The other thing to note is they don't serve alcohol, however the staff are totally flexible and have no issue with you bringing your own booze from the corner store to have with your dinner, or to just drink at their tables. The dinner is FABULOUS thai food for only about $10 USD total for two of us so is very much worth bringing your own booze to stay there.

This place is really basic. It is actually pretty expensive for what you get. The buffet breakfast isn't very appealing. Flies everywhere. The bungalows are sort of dated. The staff is disinterested. The pool is small, but nice. The beach is okay.

My brother was married on the 12th of July, on the beach in front of the Sand Sea Resort. The Sand and Sea staff were all fantastic, and went beyond the call of duty to make sure that his wedding was memorable.

I thought the resort did very well, considering that there is no road access, and no power form the mainland. To get to Rai Leh, you must do so by long tail boat. All power on Rai Leh is generated by diesel generators.

The rooms were very clean, and were accurately described on their website.

I would highly recommend Sand and Sea to anybody travelling to Rai Leh
