“Good stay, would come back again”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 5, 2014

Great location, but you can't go wrong with any resort on this beach.

Note they don't serve alcohol at the hotel/restaurant, but you can get drinks everywhere else so it's not a big deal.

Breakfast was among the worst, but still edible.

Bathroom didn't have ventilation so was hot and got musty.

The bungalow was cool to stay in. The bed was OK, pillows not so good, having a safe in the room was great.

Would stay there again.

Stayed 3 nights in December 2013. As other reviewers have said, West Railay is definitely the place to stay; perfect beach and great views.
We were toying between staying at the Sand Sea and at the more expensive Railay Village next door. We compromised and went for the Sand Sea but with a Grand Deluxe room and that was a great choice. The Sand Sea has facilities that are every bit as good and the Grand Deluxe rooms are brand new, massive and really high spec. We had a 1st floor room and these are much better than the ground floor simply because the windows are so large and you would need the curtains closed most of the time.
The bungalows also looked a good standard and we would happily stay in them in future.
Breakfast is not great (like most of SE Asia) but the omelettes are good so go for them.
The 2 pools can get busy and the palm tree surroundings mean that you can need to keep switching loungers to get the sun or shade that you are looking for. Also the loungers are red hot owing to them being dark brown PVC!
The best bit about Railay is the mornings and evenings, before and after the day trippers from Ao Nang have descended. This is when the place feels even more special and makes it really worth the (small) effort of getting the boat across to stay here. We went kayaking in the morning with the beaches almost empty and it was idyllic.
Final bonus was spending half an hour with a family of Langur monkeys by the back pool. In general these are much rarer across Thailand than the Macaques and here they were in the trees by the pool mid-morning with almost no-one else there!

-you dont mind over-crowding, mass tourism, noise ( this happens i suppose during peak season which is when we went)
-when you arrive by tailboat, there is a chance that you arrive on east railay beach which i really don't wish for you because, not only will you be dropped off in the water and be expected to carry your luggage on your head, but the sand in the water is grey slime (to be fair, it is known that east Railay is not really a beach and that the west is supposedly better. Supposedly.)
-you dont mind having a beach but can't swim in the sea because there are about 150 tail boats parked around EVERYWHERE waiting to pick passengers up and drop them off and have the noisiest motors running all the time
-when you are finally shown to your room (we had a deluxe building at the back of the hotel, and which is described as being in the quiet part with access to another pool) only to be welcomed with this overpowering smell of sewege and sulphur outside the door, and then to go into the room and realise that the smell has seeped in and that they tried to cover it up with an awful airfreshner which made it even worse!!
-you dont mind a very average breakfast, lunch and dinner
-you thought that Ao Nang would be better but then arrived there and were disappointed by the lack of authenticity in the town-it was literally built to cater for tourists and nothing was authentic, and the putrid smell

Now for the few good points:
-as soon as we arrived, we immediately wanted to leave the next day, went to the receptionist and asked to leave and be refunded. I suppose she did all that she could and we ended up paying for two nights instead of 5 (one for the night we stayed and one as a fee), we thought it was unfair because seriously, having to sleep in a room that smells like a sewer and then having to pay for it is a joke. In the end we got out and the receptionist was kind with us.
-this part of the beach is small with these cliffs around it. The setting seems very beautiful and with blue skies, blue waters and green cliffs, it would seem like a gem. But it was crowded, dirty, the boats, the sea which was in low tide...it was overall so so disappointing, but i suppose during low season, there would be less people, therefore fewer boats and if the beach was cleaner it would be much better.
I know there are several reviews here which rave about this resort but we really didnt have a good experience of it at all. Maybe during low season it would be better.

This place is awesome. We were unfortunately only there for one night but will absolutely be back again. The rooms are really nice and service is very good. We enjoyed the more chilled out second pool away from the beach but appreciated the choice to do either high energy or more chilled out. Overall just a very cool experience and beautiful place.

They put on a great night for NYE. Not a crazy party but we enjoyed it a lot. We'll see you again!

My husband, friend, and I stayed here over Thanksgiving for six nights. We had stayed here previously two years ago on our honeymoon, and loved Railay so wanted to return. My husband and I stayed in one of the newer deluxe rooms, and my friend had a deluxe bungalow. (We had stayed in a Junior Suite two years ago.) The deluxe rooms are by far the nicest rooms on the property and maybe even in the whole area. Big, new bathrooms, comfy beds, and a nice deck/lanai. I would definitely recommend paying the extra, as all the other options are a little tired and worn. The second story room's deck catches the ocean breeze better than ground floor. I would try not to stay in the first two buildings (1100, and 1200) as there is a pretty bad sewage smell that comes off the Railay Bay Resort. We stayed in 1300, which was fine. Breakfast is nothing to write home about, but it is free and the ocean front setting can't be beat. The staff is generally disenchanted with tourists and typically only smile to little kids. We ate two dinners there, first was amazing, second not so much--I think that was partly due to what we ordered. Flame Tree just down the beach is a great option for lunch and dinner on the west side, they also do take away--which we did one night and sat on the beach. They also make a decent coffee. Pizza is good at Railay Bay Resort. We did a bunch of rock climbing, and used Tex & Railay Rock Climbing. King is also good and hot rocks. Different companies go to different places, so you might have to switch if you want to mix it up a bit. If you hire a private guide, do it the day before and try to start as early as you can so you beat the traffic. Deep water soloing from Railay all goes thru Hot Rocks, and it doesn't matter where you sign up. If enough people sign up, they will hire a sail boat to take you out to the back side of Poda Island (this is where the Tonsai group goes as well), otherwise it will be a long tail. The captain of the sailboat is an AWESOME climber-(bare footed of course). It is worth trying to get him to do a route or two. Also recommend renting a kayak and paddling out to the karsts across from phrang-nga bay. They are pretty cool.

Room Tip: The deluxe rooms are by far the nicest rooms on the property and maybe even in the whole area. Big...

We loved this hotel and Railay in general. No traffic, 50metres to the beach, 20metres the pool and 10metres to a great mango smoothie.
No alcohol in the resort but you can buy it and take it to your table in the restaurant. Fabulous!

Room Tip: We liked the bungalows.

Railay is divided into East, West and Tonsai. East is mangroves with a very strong high and low tide making for unpleasant smells and no beaches to enjoy. West Railay is the place to stay hands down. Beach front hotels, white sand beaches, clear water, etc etc. Tonsai is definitely for the backpacker crowd.
Sand & Sea was perfect for us which is on the West side. We had a bungalow by the back pool (there are two swimming pools). The front one attracts more families and hence it was nice to be set back from the hustle and bustle of the beach crowd, kids, etc, yet was still only a 1 minute leisurely stroll to the beach and restaurant etc
The bungalow was spacious, clean, AC, no bugs or mosquitos….
The breakfast buffet was fantastic!! huge variety!! loved waking up and having such a delicious breakfast practically feet in the sand.
And the price before the peak season was a huge plus! We initially reserved three nights and then extended another two. We continued our travels onward for another few days but decided to come back to sand and sea in railay before flying out of krabi our last night. the last night fell into 'peak' season and was double per night of what we paid per night for the first five nights. so advice for next year: stay before christmas week!!

Room Tip: Bungalows near the back pool: 302-315
