“Affordable hotel in great location”
Reviewed July 2, 2013

Krabi is gorgeous, and Sand Sea had everything we needed to enjoy it. Our bungalow was small but comfortable, the breakfast buffet was extensive and tasty, the beach in front of the hotel was quiet and beautiful, and we were a quick walk to the other beach and restaurant zone. It obviously couldn't compare to the 5 star places we stayed at in other areas of Thailand, but for the price, it was great. A couple of drawbacks: (1) the hotel is under construction (though our room was far enough away that it didn't bother us); (2) the dinner we had at the hotel restaurant was probably the worst meal we had in Thailand.

Railay is a great place to spend a holiday. It has beautiful white sandy beaches (Railay West beach and Phranang Beach) with fantastic views of limestone hills, rock climbing, kayaking, island hopping etc. Despite it being isolated from the rest of Krabi (you have to take a long tail boat from Ao Nang Beach / Nam Mao Pier / Krabi town to get to Railay), this cape is sufficient in it's facilities and activities (mainly recreational and outdoor). Staying in Sand Sea Resort made the experience better. It is centrally located in Railay West (good beach and view) but has access to East Railay (cheaper restaurants, minimarts, internet, spas, travel agents) at the rear of the hotel. It shares the same beach with Rayavadee Resort (exclusive 5 star hotel) and other 4 star hotels. The hotel has a brand new accommodation called the Grand Deluxe Rooms which we stayed in for 3 nights and it was very clean with modern design and very spacious. The resort has 2 swimming pools (the rear one better). My only complaint would be that there is undergoing construction at the most rear and most front of the resort (9-5pm) which could get a bit noisy at times but mainly tolerable. Would definitely visit Railay and stay at this resort again.

Room Tip: Choose the brand new grand deluxe rooms - modern design, spacious and clean There are 2 swimming po...

When we checked in to the Sand Sea resort I was pleased overall with the accommodations. The location is central and the pools are a nice addition to the facilities. However, I have never stayed in a hotel in which the staff was so unprofessional. Furthermore, it wasn't the general staff, but instead 2 different managers.
Perhaps the most notable incident occurred when we ate dinner at the hotel restaurant. We ordered drinks and the manager who took our order misunderstood, bringing us twice as many drinks/the incorrect drinks. Instead of taking responsibility for his mistake, he angrily told us it was our fault, insisted we take the drinks, and pay for them. He then proceeded to stand next to our table and quite obviously talk about us in Thai to another waiter.
The second incident worth noting occurred the next morning was we were checking out. We had a very early 6 am departure, and when we went to return the key, they told us we had to walk back to the room with a manager to inspect the mini bar and make sure we didn't eat or drink anything. After inspecting the mini bar, he accused us of having consumed a coca-cola, and told us we needed to pay him 50 BHT before we could leave. This accusation was especially preposterous because the mini bar is stocked with 2 of each item, and there were still 2 coca-colas in the fridge. However, at this point, we were in danger of missing our boat and the manager would not back down on the 50 BHT charge. Due to the short runway we now had to make it to our boat, we caved, handing him 100 BHT, having no smaller change ( he claimed to have no change either). Thus, paying twice as much for an item we didn't consume in the first place.
There were other staff members who were accommodating and friendly but the interactions we had with both managers mentioned above was truly unacceptable. On a beach full of beautiful resorts and hotels, it's worth taking a pass on Sand Sea to stay somewhere with better service.

Railay Beach is stunning and an absolute must do when in Thailand. We visited Railay 5 years ago and stayed at one of the cheaper resorts on the other side of the Island.

Sand Sea is a good option as it is on the better side and in the low season is quite affordable. We took advantage of a THB1500 Internet special for one of the older ac bungalows and breakfast.

The room was very clean but felt rather tired, the bed also very hard. Lots of space though and a nice area outside to have a beer and read a book.

There are two pools - the original one near reception gets wifi but is currently in a construction zone as they extend the resort. The new pool at the back is much better but doesn't get as much sun and no wifi.

The breakfast buffet was as expected. Lunch and dinner at the resort restaurant was good (for Thai food) and priced reasonably considering the location. As this is a muslim run resort no alcohol is served, however they don't mind if you bring your own. If you want to save money there are lots of other options on the other side of the Island, Mom's Kitchen would be our recommendation.

We found the staff rather rude and unhelpful (especially at reception).

All in all not a bad place but an improvement in staff attitude and reinvigoration of the rooms would give it a real lift.

There isn't much choice on Railay but would recommend this as a good combination of value and location ( on the better side of the island)

Very nice hotel. There are 2 types of bungalows: brand new and old. I was in one of the older. It was clean, no bugs/insects and very confortable. If I had to go again I would ask for the newer ones. The food in the restaurant was really good and the staff super helpful.

Room Tip: Get the new bungalow

There are two types of bungalows. The older ones look like the typical holiday style bungalows and are a little bit outdated. The newer bungalows are under construction and look real nice but are much more expensive. The older bungalows are large in size, with tiled floors. The aircon does not do the job, because it is too small to keep the large place cool. The beds are good, restaurant is nice and located at the beach with nice view. Breakfast is buffet and also good. Rooms are not cheap, but then again the whole beach is quite expensive and this is one of the more affordable ones. You can rent a kayak. Nice to paddle around the bay. Bear in mind: this place is under construction for newer bungalows so expect some noise. It looks that they are allmost ready. It hase a nice beach and swimming oppertunities and an own swimming pool.

Just to aware you the breakfast can make you sick as my husband spend whole day in the toilet vomiting. The place is nice that's true but only for the price in low season. I will never wont to pay for that full price in high season. Staff not much English speaking. Toilets/Bathroom stinks - some days more some days less depend how much work housekeeper wont to put in it. After my complain they clean properly and they spend 30 min but the day before only 10 minutes for whole room and bathroom as we were on swimming pool and we saw that. Beach it's nice, very nice if it's clean - again not to often that's happen. Basically lazy staff and horrible breakfast.

Not recommended.
