Right on edge of West Railay beach = one of the best locations available for access to exotic sights of this area. Short walk to east side and around bend to famous Pranang beach where you will find spectacular limestone cliffs etched through millennium in wondrous ways. The Superior bungalows are large and comfortable, but not particularly updated. Bed was just fine. AC not quite up to the task. A few things in the room needed attention, but no deal-breakers. Desk staff were very friendly, but with somewhat limited English . Except for included (and good) breakfast buffet, DO NOT waste your time at the hotel's beach-front restaurant, where you will receive very slow, poor service, no alcohol, and where it seems the odds of actually getting what you order are slim. But there are lots of other options very nearby. Be aware that only approach to this hotel is via water taxi. You will get wet to the knees disembarking, and it appears unlikely that you will receive any help dragging luggage across the sand beach to hotel registration desk. This process means this is not a great place for those with limited mobility.. Be sure to explore the entire peninsula area.

Room Tip: If you do not mind a bit of extra walk, ask for a bungalow around or near the tranquil pool at the rear of the complex.

We spent 5 nights in Sand Sea.

To get there is an adventure itself :) From Krabi airport to pier by bus, after taking off shoes to carry all luggage through water to get on a longtail boat (in Ao Nang; costs 100THB to Railay).
After 20 minutes ride, again getting wet :) just straight at the beach of railay where the boat stops, you will find Sand Sea.

Check-In was fast and the will bring you with a golf caddy to your room. We had the luck to stay in the new building (finished in Jan 2013) so the smell of fresh paint was still in the air.
That room was very nice with nice furniture, big TV, aircondition a lot of space and an own terrace (DON'T leave anything on terrace and always close all doors because of "monkey-business")

The breakfast was okay but not really not more than that.
The beach is between 1 and 5 minutes away from the rooms (depends of location of your room) it was almost clean but there was compared to other location still a lot of garbage everywhere around.
That was actually the biggest and only problem in all Railay: GARBAGE, in the Jungle, on the walk ways, at the beach... just everywhere.
Only for that reason we won't go there in future again, although the location would be verry nice without the waste problem.

We stayed at sand sea for 10 nights in a junior suite cottage. The room was a decent size with a huge bed, whirlpool bath, shower and a nice veranda. The room decor is a little dated with a hilarious chaise long. These bungalows are right at the front just a few metres from the stunning beach. They have 2 pool areas. We used the one at the back which was lovely. As you lie back sunbathing you can see beautiful limestone cliffs and the occasional monkey in the trees above. Sand sea is on Railey West, the nicest beach by far. There are a number of places to eat nearby. Generally it's cheaper on Railey east which is a 7 minute walk away. Bring a torch for night time walks. The restaurant at the hotel is more expensive than other places and the staff are indifferent. Breakfast is self service and ok. The staff just stand chatting don't expect them to clear any plates until 2 minutes to ten! We had a lovely time but people working on Railey are not nearly as friendly as other places like Phi Phi or Koh Samui which is a shame.

We booked a week here as part of our babymoon and we're so glad we did. First of all, staying on west Railay Beach is definitely the best. The resort is right on a beautiful beach and it's way quieter than party-central on east Railay. We stayed in a Jr. Suite Cottage which was right by the front pool but not close enough to feel like there was a lot of traffic right outside our front door. Plus there's some foliage to block the view, which is well-manicured. There's a cute little porch in front with two adirondak chairs. Inside was sufficiently nice, certainly a great value for the money, although the decor appeared to have primed 10-15 years ago. The bathroom had a two-person jacuzzi tub, which was fun and we did use it. The shower was awkwardly RIGHT next to the toilet without any kind of surround or curtain. It got everything wet so we ended up using the sprayer from the tub and kind of sat in the tub to "shower" instead. The air con, lights, etc. only turn on when you put your key card in a slot inside the front door, presumably to save electricity. It was fine because the air con cooled the room down quickly anyway. The breakfast buffet each morning was generous and all the tables have a fantastic view right on the beach. Get there early because the food goes cold! We didn't have any of our meals there otherwise due to other reviews and the fact that they don't serve alcohol (for my husband). We enjoyed splitting our time between the front pool and the beach, just steps away from each other. What a life, right? I'll echo other poster's comments about subpar service, that was our experience as well, and also the same as the place we stayed in Bangkok so maybe it's a country-wide thing. No friendly greetings, hard to get their attention in the restaurant, they just kind of stand around in clusters and talk to each other ignoring guests. I asked for another towel one day and was denied, too.

It's a five minute walk down a well-lit path from the hotel to the boardwalk of east Railay which has lots of restaurants, bars, a couple mini marts, etc. But it's all mangroves over there, no swimming beaches. On west Railay a 2 minute walk down the beach there's a cute walking street with some cafes and shops. I'll let you in on a secret one of the shop owners told us -- the absolute BEST food came from a little shack of a place called something like Local Thai Food. If you walk down the Walking Street away from the beach and you keep to the left, the path ducks under a downed tree and right after that on the left there are two little open-air places. It's the second one. Great food and super cheap.

Don't believe the bad reviews!!! We stayed for 5 days in February (5th to 10th) and for the location right on Railay West beach this is the best value hotel. We had 3 bungalows between us in the area behind reception up to the new pool at the back of the resort, both the pools are really nice, the one by the beach has a green hoarding up but you don't even notice it, but anyway we were out all day so didn't need a pool but we did swim in both as they were so inviting. The bungalows were clean enough and had very good aircon and no mosquitos if you keep the door closed. There were times when the water wasn't hot but to be honest you don't need hot water as you need to cool off most of the time and the water was always at least a bit warm not like cold water in London!
Breakfast was pretty good when compared to other places we stayed in Thailand, you can't expect western sausage and bacon, the Thai option was always good, good coffee and variety of fruit. We didn't eat in the evening so restaurant untested but Railay has so many options including Utopia Indian which is worth finding.
We did 2 boat trips booked through the hotel both of which pick up on the beach, Phi Phi by speed boat and 4 'islands' by longtail, both excellent days out with good food, ask at the hotel activity and travel office.
We would stay here again without hesitation.

Room Tip: Bungalows between reception and the rear pool have the prettiest location.
