“Not bad”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 13, 2007

The location is perfect, the surrounding area and beaches are perfect, really beautiful. It only takes a 5 min boat ride to get to Ao Nang; the nearest town center, the only problem is that the boat drivers insist on waiting for 8 passengers so you could be there for hours.

We came here after spending 3 nights at the Conrad Bangkok so we naturally expected it to be worse, but the staff were suprisingly off and very unfriendly, don't expect them to smile back at you if you smile at them. Nowhere seems that cheap in Railay but next time we'll definitely go somewhere else.

The rooms are pretty basic, everything you'd expect for 1,950b a night minimum, if you're not fussy then it should be fine.

Basically the surrounding area is breathtaking, but the staff are pissy and the food is terrible, and the rooms are basic but bearable.

Loved it!
Bungalow was great - nice and clean. Location was brilliant, hard to beat in all of Railay, East & West. The included breakfast buffet was fine - plenty to choose from. We ate at the restaurant at lunch and dinner on a few occasions and the food was delicious - authentic Thai food as well as Western fare. You can bring in alcoholic drinks from the shop that's 100mt away. Pool was lovely and clean.
All in all, we had a great stay - would go definitely go back.

We went here for our honeymoon. The location of the hotel is great. Small bungalows on the west side of Railay (definitely don't go on east side, it's muddy and full of mosquitos in the evening), in a tropical surrounding. Bungalows are a bit old, but still OK. They could smell nicer though. So, if the location is great, then the restaurant services is another matter. I read in some reviews that staff is rude. Nope, I couldn't say that, they were really nice. But extremely incompetent. We ate there 4 times, and 3 times they made a mistake or simply forgot about one dish. And they were always very slow. For dinner, I'd sooner recommend a restaurant further down the beach, called Flame Tree.
Oh yeah, the hotel also has massages - which were very good, worth going.
So, if you're not too hung on going to a very classy hotel and prefer to have a good location in a bit old, but still nice bungalows, it's definitely worth going. The price is good also.
We booked through [--], also the transport from Phuket airport, and had no problems with that, it all went well.

Railay beach is idylic, absolutely beautiful. The Sand Sea resort itself was nice - our bungalow was a good size with a nice terrace outside, nice comfortable bed. Pool is nice enough. We were however quite disappointed that the hotel is dry so no alcohol in mini-bar or with meals. Which brings me to the food which was not too good. Actually it was really bad. It was bland and it came out cold the times we had lunch and dinner there. Breakfast not too impressive - there were ants crawling over the bread. Coffee alright though. We were there for 5 nights and didn't eat there again - there is a bar/restaurant a couple of resorts along where the food was really yummy so we ate there the rest of the time. West Railay is beautiful but it is worth taking a walk over to East Railay as well where there are some funky bars and cheaper shops. So I would recommend the location and the bungalows but other resorts looked to have the same on offer but nicer food so I probably would try staying at one of them next time.

Sand Sea Resort is a good, solid hotel set in beautiful Krabi - the hotel's restuarant is unfortunately typical of places that cater to tourist -overpriced and bland. The breakfast was also as unspectacular. As a young couple, my husband and I felt out of place with the hordes of swedish families there. Reilley had alot of other diversions so we didn't have to spend alot of time at the hotel. Overall, a nice place, friendly staff.

We stayed at the Sand Sea in July of 2007 and came away with a mixed review of Railay beach. The good part was the location which is amazing and one of our favorite places on our month long trip.

The only bad part was the hotel which had bugs in the bed and all over the bathroom (we are not overly fussy travellers but having dozens of ants in your shower was not what we were expecting for 2100baht per night). We had light bulbs burnt out in our room so it was dark and smelled musty.

After changing rooms we realized the door on our new bungalow was warped enough from the frame that someone could reach in and unlock the door if they were ambitious enough.

One thing we noticed is that the more expensive rooms (we were into one of them) appeared to be in much better shape. If we had stayed in one of those our experience might have been better -- but probably not by much since the service and attitude of the staff is awful. If someone was planning on booking a regular room from this hotel I would strongly discourage them from doing so.

From our experience the service, food and rooms at the Railay Bay resort next door was far superior and we would not hesitate to book here if we come back.

Railay is great... the Sand Sea Resort was not!

--unfriendly staff
--the wanted to place us in a bungalow near a building site ('building is finished") whicht it obviously wasn't. hence there was a notice at reception saying they are sorry for the noise.

--when we entered the room the dust bin was not emptied. the aircon made a terrible noise and the interior of the bungalow was more in a darkish colour.

--bathroom was so-so but not okay for the price.

--dirty pond

-->wouldnt stay there again nor wouldnt stay at railay beach again due to the loads of waste all over the place and the generators in the middle between the two beaches.

-->people seemed to be less friendly than in the rest of thailand but that may have been due to my non-objective krabi sands experience...
