“A hidden gem in Georgia's wine region”
Reviewed April 17, 2012

Chateau Mere is a must-stop for anyone visiting the Kakheti region in eastern Georgia. It's only about an hour's drive from the airport and 90 mins or so from downtown Tbilisi. The chateau is on the right side of the Gombori road, just before you come to Telavi.

We visited in April and was in for a treat. Very nice, affordable and clean rooms, overlooking the majestic Caucasus mountains. The truly accommodating owner Giorgi and his wife are happy to tell you all you need to know about traditional Georgian wine-making. Needless to say, they also serve you their own red/white wine as well as chacha and various fruit juices, together with tasty local dishes. Breakfast was simple but delightful.

There's a small pool for hotter days and you can ride horses etc.

Room Tip: The higher up, the better view!

We just got back from an overnight trip...we heard about chateau mere from few friends, and the reviews were so high, that we decided to go with many friends, some that stayed the night and others that came for the day. from the minute we got there till our departure, we cou
D not have had a better time. The chateau was amazing, the views from every room, including the ones in the towers were spectacular .....sipping a glass of wine by the fireplace, and having great conversation with the owners Gia & Niño, made an incredible night, truly a memorable one. Thank you ....
Their swimming pool and jacuzzi should be functioning soon, and they are suppose to start having a full time massage therapist in may....can't wait. You definitely have to visit chateau mere, for the day or night.

Room Tip: The kids loved the square tower...

We had the most enjoyable two days in Kakheti in October. Our base was Chateau Mere, which is a small, cosy hotel with fantastic chef and plenty to do for kids - our kids were offered participation in grape harvesting, making "churchelas" - local , seasonal, grape-juice and walnut based treat, horse riding, hiking, and of course there is a pool for hotter days... The parents were offered a glimpse of traditional wine-making (in huge clay pots, buried in ground), wine tasting and lovely dinner by the fire-place. The chef was happy to share his cooking tips and cooking courses can be booked. And in addition to all these things to do there is so much to see around the hotel - old churches in enchanting woods, ruins of an ancient theological academy - all within 20 minutes drive. I strongly recommend Chateau Mere for its prime position, hospitable owners and wonderful execution of local cuisine. I would love to go there again.

Room Tip: ask for the court-yard view and get the mountain view in the background

Our group went to this newly opened guesthouse and winery to explore wine making in Kahetia, main wine region of Georgia. Trip was wonderful and I can say that viniculture is progressing rapidly in Georgia amidst general poverty.
Guesthouse owners are very hospitable people and try to do everything to make your stay enjoyable. However staff still needs more experience and training.
Guesthouse is located 4 km from Telavi (regional capital) beside road from Tbilisi in newly built "castle". Rooms are big and with most needed amenities. Here is even free wi-fi, albeit very slow.
