Description: Whether you're in Ceres for the cherries at Klondyke, the snow on Matroosberg or in the Koue Bokkeveld, the big-sky beauty of the Tankwa Karoo National Park and the Cederberg or a thrill-seeking day with Ceres Zipslide Adventures, make sure you stop over at Die Tolhuis Restaurant, without doubt the coziest restaurant with the best mountain views in the Ceres area. And if, like welcoming owners Reint and & Karien Grobler, you swear by the wise words of Mahatma Ghandi, "there is more to life than increasing its speed," you can prepare yourself for a mouthwatering 'kuier' that will keep you coming back for more.

“Quaint and traditional with flair”
Reviewed July 23, 2014

Most meals are based on the traditional roosterkoek with quaint names such as "Kaalgat" (Jam and cheese) and a lamb stew with vegetables that will please any hungry stomach. Take aways a definite possibility. Moerkoffie on the fire adds to the traditional flavour.

“A great little unpretentious restaurant. ”
Reviewed July 10, 2014 via mobile

I often drove past Die Tolhuis and wondered what it was like. Well my wife and I decided to try it a week ago. It was a toll house in 1765 on Mitchells Pass which is between Wolseley and Ceres. It is now a rustic restaurant and seats about 34 inside and lots of seating outside. It is now winter and there was a lovely fire going with coffee in old pots etc. The menu is different! Real old Cape food and other. We had Skillies and Bangers with onion and mash. (Skillies = liver with fat) It was sooo good we went back yesterday and had the same. They are licenced and the lady serving, Sheila, was delightful. It is only open during day from about 9 to 5. If you enjoy a really South African experience in a rustic restaurant, make sure you stop there on your way to Ceres or, if going from Ceres. No cell phone reception, no wi fi, just lekker kos and a peaceful surrounding with a baboon or two running around.Highly recommended to those who want something different and inexpensive. Credit cards accepted.

Hi James

Thanks so much for the great feedback. The Tolhuis is what we are all about: hospitality, comfort food, good company and 'langbeen-kuiers' in front of an open fire. Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for the great support.

Best regards

Reint & Karien

“Worthwile to stop”
Reviewed May 30, 2014

friendly staff - great mountain view - lovely atmosphere ......

and we had a delicious Tollhouse Roesterkoek Burger. It was very hot that day so we choose the home made lemonade which was so delightful.

All in all a nice stopover when you are on the R 43 and it has a interesting history dating back to 1765 when Jan Mostert of the Wolvenkloof farm build the first pass

“Something Special”
Reviewed May 19, 2014

Whenever I have friends or family visiting nearby Tulbagh, we always plan a drive which will necessitate a meal at the Tolhuis. There is a genuine welcome from the owners and staff, and great, freshly cooked South African fayre. Not to be missed.

Thanks so much for your feedback. Hospitality, comfort food and big smiles is what we're all about. We are there for people who actually enjoy the journey rather than speeding to their destination.
