“Excellent dinner”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 15, 2014

We had a dinner today for 22 people to celebrate the baptism of my daughter and everything again was just perfect. Amongst the group we had a selection from the entire menu and everyone was extremely happy with their meal, beautifully presented, tasted delicious and served promptly. this time I went with the more traditional pub fare with the sausage and mash -excellent. a great dinner thank you. I will definitely be returning.

“Nice 'gastro' pub, poor food, gone downhill”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 13, 2014

I've left 2 previous reviews on this pub. The 1st was days after it opened (willing to give benefit of the doubt), the 2nd was some months later. Just been back and it's definitely gone downhill food-wise.

The more recent reviews are accurate - the decor is clean, modern and homely, the staff are welcoming enough (although none seem to stay very long...), the beers are mostly local, and the new outdoor area is spacious and a nice change to the usual beer garden. But the BIG negative is the food. The 'vegetarian' offering is terrible, some sort of aubergine and spinach dish with no name (£9) but looked more like a side order. Here's a tip I learned here, if a dishes name is just the ingredients then avoid it. I've tried the cod and chips previously, average at best, but the pricing suggests it should be far above what it is. I honestly felt cheated out of my money on this most recent visit, and had to order a side-portion of chips which of course aren't cheap either. I doubt I'll be back for a long time.

The problem with the food is either the menu, or the chef, or both - why is there a restaurant menu, an indoor bar menu and an outdoor pizza-only menu? What a ridiculous system. A restaurant can certainly have too many dishes, but this one doesn't have enough. At least they've finally added a vegetarian dish after almost a year - shame it was so dire.

I've also noticed the car park isn't anywhere near as full in recent months, which might just be a coincidence. 6 months ago you couldn't park here, now it's half empty. I want the owners to fix this place up, they clearly have the money. I fear they are trying to market themselves towards tourists going to Sissinghurst Castle rather than building up a decent local reputation. I hope the owners take on board the feedback that has been left recently and change the menu, get a new chef, whatever. Just do something about the awful food.

We are sorry that your dissatisfaction with the vegetarian option on the Classic Menu has triggered such a negative litany.

We continue to take all constructive feedback posted on trip advisor as we develop our new business.

We are disappointed and sorry you are feeling so aggrieved. This business is jointly owned by myself and the Head Chef - there has been no change of management or chef since it opened. Furthermore, we are thrilled to have enjoyed loyalty from our hard working & dedicated team and can report that we have nearly 10 team members who have been with us since we opened on 20 September 2013. We have added significantly to this team as the business has grown. Additionally, your observations on the vegetarian option are in isolation to other feedback we have had. Our Roasted vine tomato with feta, chickpea, aubergine and spinach salad with a yoghurt, mint & cumin dressing has been one or most popular additions to the Classic Menu. For the benefit of other readers, we would like assure you we have always had vegetarian options on ours menus.

As we introduce new food offers to the business, it is essential we do that gradually. We have observed the extreme frustration this causes you, but know that it is better to try and 'ease' into new menus with defined limits than open them up across the whole establishment and fail to deliver to our high standards.

Our strategy has been since we opened approximately 9 months ago to be a Village Pub with a good quality food offer and very comfortable & homely bedrooms. This is first & foremost in our minds as we go about our work every day. We have been very privileged to enjoy the support and loyalty from the majority of our local residents - as well as from people who come from further afield.

“All style and no substance.”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 9, 2014

With pretensions of being a "gastro pub" this place falls heavily flat on the "gastro" side.

Much money has clearly been spent on renovating what was a very tired-looking pub. The garden is nice (if noisy from passing traffic) and the decor is OK if bland.

Where this place currently fails is in the food. I have visited twice. The first time all main dishes were badly over-seasoned. On a more recent visit, a cheeseburger was dry and tasteless and served with a small portion of soggy, cold chips.

Given its location close to Sissinghurst Castle, this place ought to be a publican's gold-mine. At present, there are much better options within a short drive.

We are very sorry to hear that your two experiences at our Village Pub & Dining Room have been unsatisfactory. It's very disappointing for us to receive this feedback and we can assure you that these comments have been raised with the kitchen.

Our primary objective when opening The Milk House was to re create a Village Pub which provides a high quality dining experience for our guests. Our kitchen sources all it's produce locally, and it is prepared freshly every day and cooked on site. We have remained true to our goals and have been delighted that, in the majority, our Village Pub has been well received by locals and visitors alike.

Tasty food, nice atmosphere, good menu and quick service. Felt a little rushed at first but it settled down once dinner service for a little busier.

“Lunch”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 8, 2014

Took my 90 year old mother to the Milk House and whilst the décor and ambiance are very nice thought the prices were high for the food quality. Sides were charged as well as a high price for mains
The drink prices were high as well £2.50 for 200ml coke is surely too high.

Service was ok but petered out as it was busy.

Sorry would not return
