One of my favourite restaurants in the world. Fabulous setting around the swimming pool in the Oak Valley wine estate. Fillet steak from their own cows is to die for and their 2007 blend is delicious.

Oh, oh, oh Oak Valley. What a pleasure. We were surprised that it has taken us so long to seek out this hidden gem, which opened in 2012. But better late than never. The setting is lovely. The food delicious and the service came with a friendly smile. Oh, and the wine is excellent although somewhat expensive, given the mark up in the restaurant. The number of walk-ins on a 'quite' Saturday came as a surprise, not only to ourselves but to the staff, but it shows that the word is getting around and this is one of the latest 'in' places.

We had the distinct pleasure of enjoying dinner at The Pool Room on Friday 2 May 2014 whilst staying in Grabouw for the Houw Hoek Mountain Bike Adventure and the Cool Wine & Country Festival. The restaurant is situated well along a beautiful oak tree lined road and although we arrived after dark, we were most impressed by the layout and setting of the restaurant itself, which as its name suggests overlooks a large, well-maintained and lit swimming pool. One can only imaging how awesome this place must be on a lovely long summer afternoon.

The pork chops were definitely the best I have ever tasted and my partner's sirloin steak was also superb. The beef and pork are both produce of the estate and the quality is excellent.

The service was excellent without being over-attentive and the wines are superb.

We will definitely be back sometime soon, hopefully for a lunch, so we can enjoy the stunning views and pool area.

A very pleasant environment - with more formal seating around the pool and in the pool room. Those folk looking for a more relaxed environment ... try the choice of picnics which can be enjoyed on the lovely lawns close by. Our group included 6 adults and 6 kids - everyone had a great meal with the roast chicken coming out tops together with the rib-eye. Nice gourmet burgers for adults.

The only downside was the wine - besides the fruity rose and enjoyable sav blanc, the rest of the wines were over priced for what was to be a casual lunch ... maybe slightly restrictive for the more cost conscious.

Lovely setting for summer. Unfortunately we were there on a cold evening and there was a chill coming from the fridges. The manager stacked some boxes sheltering our table which made the experience more pleasant. The marrow bones were exceptionally presented where the bone was sliced vertically creating a long bone instead of the traditionally horizontally cut bones. The grilled vegetable salad was incredibly generous too. The prime rib was cooked to perfection and although not very cheffy in its presentation will certainly satisfy any meat lover. I like my plate to come complete with complimentary flavours so when I ordered the yellowtail I was a little surprised to have to order extra vegetables on the side. It shows a lack of confidence in the kitchen when one offers creamed spinach and other choices with your meal. Perhaps I expect this at a pub and not a restaurant known for its charcuterie. The melon sorbet was exceptionally mellony and delicious. So too were the chocolate fondants. The perfectly oozy gooey centres spread lazily across the plate when the spoons were sunk into the middle. The apple tart tatan was honest and delivered on flavour. A lovely night out with friends but perhaps a few strategically placed heaters and a real fireplace could really add to the winter experience.
