Whilst visiting the Elgin area on a day out from our base in Franschhoek, we called in at the Pool Room at Oak Valley wines for a light lunch and were so glad we did. The quality and presentation of the food served around the pool was as good as we have experienced in numerous holidays around the Western Cape and compare it equal to, say, Bread and Wine or Heaven restaurants. As this was an unplanned visit, although tempted to try their steaks (they looked first class), we just ordered a salad and beef burger with seasonal vegetables. I forced myself to try a dessert and was not disappointed by their apple tart tartin (apples grown on the estate). All the food was fresh, professionally prepared and beautifully presented. Service was very good.
The weather was perfect for dining outside on the day we visited. When next in the area we intend to return but prepare ourselves to sample more of the menu!

As stated in earlier reviews the location is just a few minutes drive from the N2 - off the R321, near Grabouw and for example, less than an hour's drive through beautiful scenery from Franschhoek.

PS their estate wines were really good and there is a small delicatessen stocked with fine produce.

I took three friends for lunch at the pool room today. Expecting great things, first what a lovely setting a very impressive view the food was good, not great, the wine is first class. The sad part was the service, I don,t mind slow because i go for the occasion but i do mind bad manners and i will not have food dropped in front of me like some cafeteria and staff that do not communicate, there are too many good restaurants to waste time on a restaurant that does not care enough .
very very sad

This newly opened Restaurant is a must to visit if you are travelling on the N2 to say Hermanus or Cape Town.

The outside seating, as the name suggests, is around a pool - beautiful.

The food on the two occasions we visited this year was excellent and the service likewise.
We would highly recommend.

We've had a few excellent lunches here, but the one that stands out the most was our post wedding brunch last weekend, with 60 people picnicking on the lawn under the oak trees. The food was great, the service very good, and such a beautiful location, we'll definitely be back.

No-one there when we arrived. Not a good sign but within 30 minutes almost all the tables were occupied. A varied menu was offered around the large pool. One of the signature dishes was a charcuterie platter - excellent - with locally produced Spanish-style hams, salami, dried beef and rillettes. A delicious roast veg salad (including haloumi) was another starter as was a Pool Salad both of generous proportions. The steaks were very tempting but opting for a kebab was just as good. Well aged, tender and oh-so-tasty. The side dishes were extra, but affordable. A burger turned out to be a giant portion with very good, thrice cooked (par boiled, baked and fried??) chips. Of course we didn't need dessert after the substantial meal and the speciality baked-on-the-premises breads (for sale too) but... one chocolate dessert with a home made ice and fresh fruit isn't too large, when shared four ways. It too was a real treat. Oak Valley produce a good range of wines and their Shiraz rosé was much more palatable than that of their decorated neighbour's. The price was very, very reasonable and so that is why I'd say it was one of the best meals I have had in a South Africa that increasingly thinks high prices equal excellent meals. Wrong! There is more, much more to producing a memorable meal.
