Had for a starter, loved it but portion could have been bigger. My girlfriend had fish croquettes that she loved..I had pork belly for main. no complaints.. and my girlfriend had roast beef. yorkshire pudding was a little burnt but the beef was cooked to perfection and the bearnaise sauce was very good. the panacotta and treacle tart were exceptional. loved the laid back feel, homely atmosphere of the place and will be returning. the quality of the food is very good. bit more attention to detail and why not a michelin star.only complaint is service could be a little faster

We decided to try this pub as we often go to the Olive Branch on our way up the A1. This pub is more of a detour (20+minutes each way) so I think it is probably better for those who live locally unless you don't mind the extra journey. It was nice to see their own vegetable garden behind the car park. The building itself is a bit more run down than the Olive Branch and the atmosphere is not quite the same. We had good food and there is a reasonably priced set menu lunch. Not so keen on the popping candy sprinkled over desserts but the chocolate brownie was very good. Some interesting starters - quail eggs pickled in Guinness and Marmite popcorn.

Had sunday lunch here. Had high hopes since its sister pub is The Olive Branch. However the best bit was the drive through pleasant countryside from the city.Got off to a good start with delicious bread. Food was ok but portions could have been bigger especially the vegetables. Certainly not enough for growing lads! Quality was very good however the service could have been better. Wine was not chilled and we had to ask for an ice bucket. Service was poor given that they were not that busy.

We had high hopes for the red lion having been to the sister pub, the olive branch which is excellent, however it didn't quite deliver. The afternoon started with flat coke and the sparkle never really returned. Food was of a high quality which is expected at the price. We chose the Sunday roast but were disappointed at the size of the veg portions. We asked for some more which we got but were charged £6 extra for this. Service was below expectation - water never arrived, condiments weren't offered and had to be requested and we never felt quite looked after.

Great honest pub food - and if you're just after a beer you could do worse than their own brew! And why not have it with a bar board - which is a really taste selection of nibbles to share (included quail eggs and satay-ed beans!). Reasonably priced mains and if you're not up for a pudding - at least try the petit fours!

Fish and chips seems to be on special offer if you get in early on a Friday nght (and even comes with curry sauce), but I would recommend booking. Average for 2 course and a drink - about £25
