Beautiful place, good food, manolis and staff very friendly and attentive, only caveat I would make is we stayed in a mezzanine cottage with our small baby. It's all very open plan-so was hard to be quiet/keep it dark when he was in bed and we were still up....

Room Tip: Watch open plan when you're travelling with a light sleeping baby!

Me and my partner have just arrived back from a week at Eleonas and to describe it in one word would be PERFECT!

We went to these cottages based on a review in The Independent. The main purpose of the holiday was for us to relax; and that we most definitely did! We did not hire a car so most of the days were spent around the pool. The pool was so peaceful everyday and we really felt like we were there on our own! Most other people seem to hire a car and so the pool was quiet everyday with people going off to do their own thing. Even when others were around the pool it was still so peaceful, it was just like our own villa! Some days we used the bikes at the cottages which weren't the best but we found them fun!!!!! On the bikes we visited the reservoir and winery! We also did a few walks from the cottages. We visited the beautiful lake (great smoothies), Nikolaos Monastery, and Zaros village itself. If you want to go on holiday to see more places, it would be best to hire a car (that can cope with moutains/hills!). The area is also very good for hiking and Eleonas provide a good little map which has nice routes for walking/driving/cycling!

Our room was great, it was called "Apthrodite, 10" and was close to the pool. Good size, everything we needed, very comfortable and with nice toiletries supplied. Complementary red wine and fruits on arrival!

One of the best things about the cottages was the most fantastic food. We went half board and most definitely was not disappointed. The breakfasts were the same everyday but this included a wide-ranged buffet, which was truly wonderful! And then the evening meals were superb, most nights we got to choose from 2 choices for the main course (but we could ask for a different one if we wanted), a wide range of starters and then this was finished with a lovely desert. Everything was homemade and fresh, using the local ingredients. We also ate lunch at the pool some days (we did not move from here!!!!!!). This was also just as a good; SO TASTY!! A few days we ventured down to Zaros for lunch, we weren't disappointed but we both agreed that the food at the cottages was tastier (and better value). The bar area was also very relaxing, with cards, games, books, DVDs to borrow, and a pool table.

The other great thing about Eleonas was the staff. They were honestly so helpful and were there for anything you ever needed!!!!!!! Thank you for making our holiday truly wonderful. Also, as we didn't have a car Manolis arranged a transfer for us. Great!!

I cannot recommend this place enough. I was so sad to leave and hope to go back soon!

GO!!!!!!!

Room Tip: We had room 10 and it was great! Although we didn't have a balcony it was nicely shaded, near th...

My partner and I stayed at Eleonas right at the beginning of the season in May this year for 9 nights at the start of a 2 week holiday in Crete. Serenely located traditional cottages tucked into the hillside, with glorious views and simple distant sounds of goat bells and the odd barking dog, Manolis has worked hard to create this paradise. He and his father have nurtured the beautiful established garden, with its little magical footpaths through the follage and herb gardens, which have labels so you know what fabulous herb you can smell as you pass by. The pool is sublime with the most amazing views of the mountains. Its small so to be able to have the opportunity of having it to yourself is best and perfect. Thers a pool bar but it was too early in the season to be open. My request on arriving was to feed the goats - which I'd read was possble as they have a small farm - and despite the farm still being completed, Manolis took me there and let me be a child again whilst I fed said goats and held a 3 day old kid. The restaurant is supplied by the on site garden and local produce - no mean feat considering the watering require to make anything grow in the summer heat. Diamonda ( sorry if spelt wrong?!) the main member of staff, was really attentive and lovely to everyone. The cottages have been thoughtfully designed and were scrupiously cleaned every day. They have a juicer at breakfast which was a nice surprise and I hope Diamonda is using it herself now! We missed the cooking classes as the beaches were too tempting to tear yourself away from. We had the most memorable time here and have been raving about it to everyone...my only additional request in this green age of ours is to ask if more recycling can be done - plastic water bottles etc- Manolis- is that possible?
If you love the countryside and want to relax... go ..... you will love it and Manolos deserves the success ...

Room Tip: the higher you go the less overlooked you are...but be prepeared to walk up the steep hill!

My husband, young son and I stayed in a mezzanine cottage (Urania) for 5 nights in August. We chose Eleonas based on the glorious reviews on TA and can confirm that they are totally accurate - we had a wonderful time.

Here is why:
Scenic area, up on a hill covered in olive trees, beautiful view over a monastery, exactly how I pictured Crete... ;-)
Private cottage, comfortable with a large shower room and 2 terrasses (yes, the road leading to the cottage was steep, but to us it was good exercise!)
Lovely swimming pool surrounded by olive and pomegranate trees
Hard working, friendly and efficient staff
Good food for a reasonable price
Great environment for kids with both outdoor and indoor play areas. The children all play together while the parents enjoy their post-dinner raki in peace ;-)

Guests were a mix of families and couples, there is something for everyone.
There are many places of interest around (archeological sites and monasteries), though you need a car. Beaches are just over 30 minutes drive, our best experience was Agio Farago beach, reachable only after a walk through a scenic gorge (not too difficult, we did it with a 4 year old).
And of course, your visit would not be complete without a meal at Vegera restaurant in Zaros...

We would love to return to Eleonas, it was a highlight of our 2 weeks in Crete. I am glad that we started off the trip there rather than with the North coast/Chania area, which is way more touristic.
I can only imagine that Eleonas must also be lovely in the spring or autumn, when the temperature is more comfortable for hiking. We will be back

Room Tip: The higher the cottages, the more privacy you get.

This was the perfect place to relax. Excellent cottages: we actually had one that was in wonderful shade, with all the facilities one could wish for, and plenty of Greek coffee with a little coffee pot, a little pool to cool off in. The staff, under Manolis' direction, are attentive, efficient knowledgeable and discrete. Breakfasts are wonderful with a big range of continental and Cretan specialities, and the meals in the evening on the terrace are excellent, with great local grape varieties to explore. And talking of exploration, the local walks are wonderful, the aghios Nikalaous gorge to the Rouvas Forest, to the hermits church, and to the monastery through the olive groves are in various degrees of difficulty. The one to the local bar by the lake is wonderful by moonlight. And village itself is delightful, and is an excellent location to explore the beaches on the south central coast, and the magnificent Minoan site at Phaistos and the roman site at Gortyn. And there is a traditional musical instrument maker in the village. My perfect location. We will be back soon, and will probably do some cooking..........I want those pastry recipes.........

Eleonas is a fabulous find, the perfect start to our visit to Crete. The owner welcomes you warmly as his guests, and Mando, who runs the taverna, is exceptionally friendly and helpful. Our cottage was clean and comfortable, with a great view of the mountains. Great hiking and delicious food at breakfast and dinner proved a memorable combination. My husband and I loved our stay this spring amidst glorious wild flowers and would gladly return in any season. Bravo, Eleonas!

Eleonas is one of those rare gems you stumble on through sheer luck and just don't want to leave! A big smile from the owners and a bottle of the local firewater: raki, welcomed us on our arrival. The cottages are immaculate and surprisingly modern but without losing their rustic charm - inside the stone walls and wooden beams in s a lovely roomy bathroom, a fridge for any bits and pieces you might buy along the way and facilities for coffee and their amazing mountain tea. The staff were all incredibly friendly and welcomed us like old friends every time we turned up at reception, asking if we needed advice for walking routes or perhaps to borrow a parasol for the beach? The food was AMAZING - the vast majority locally sourced and all absolutely delicious! We thoroughly recommend taking a cooking class if you can - we were taught how to make filo pies by 'Mama' who spoke virtually no English and yet gave the most fun and instructive class! If you're an adventurer you're within a short walk or drive of some spectacular walks, beaches and activities, but if you prefer just to chill out in the grounds of the resort or by the pool then you'll find it lovely and peaceful. Generally a fantastically run resort ideal for those who enjoy absorbing a bit of local culture on their travels - we'll definitely be going back!

Room Tip: All of the cottages are beautiful and have lovely views. They're set on a hillside though so ask...
