We (dad, mum and three kids aged 5-10) went to Vegera planning to have a light lunch in the early afternoon. We found a table and sat down. The older lady in charge was busy with other tables and we were in no rush and played cards. When she arrived at our table, instead of the menus we expected we were brought water wine, water, bread, four large main dishes (moussaka, pork and peas, meatballs, ... ), followed by chocolate cake. She spoke no English, we spoke no Greek. We paid the 40 Euros (8 Euros each, but maybe the children were less and adults more? - I have no idea as the bill was a tiny scrap of paper with "40" on it) and left, delighted by the pleasant service and feeling rather full. The whole place (including the toilets) was clean and inviting. Our advice: great place for a great meal if you'd like the best of Cretan cuisine but have no interest in making any particular selection form the menu.

This was our third visit to Zaros and we have always enjoyed eating at Vegera. We like to have no choice because we get to taste food we might not have ordered from a menu. Vivi creates her own recipes and we love everything we eat at Vegera. The wine is good too - not the brown stuff that tastes like watery sherry. We will return! It's excellent value at 12 Euros including wine and tea with dessert.

This tavern was a great surprise to us. It was the first time to experience a real traditional greek tavern and we loved it!We didn't know there is no menu, we didn't notice what was on that evening's menu before entering, but when we figured out how it works we loved it. The food was excellent and here I had an excellent Dakos (I found out later that I can't find one like this in any other restaurant on Crete/Greece). We were surprised to see that we only have to pay 12 euro. We plan to go back to Crete and Zaros will be again on our list because of its location and because of this excellent tavern! Looking forward to the next visit!

Meals delicious. Hospitality great in this lovely mountain town. Every night we stayed in Zaros we ate at Vegera. Vivi was the soul and the life of the restaurant, with her mother as her right hand person. There were locals and tourists that mingled at the restaurant which created a real Cretan experience. Vivi prepared special dinners with fresh fish and fresh local vegetables. Lots of variety in the cuisine with lots of wonderful tastes for the palette. Will return again to Zaros and stay at the Keramos with their unique rooms with wonderful balcony views of the mountains.

If you are OK with being served a variety of good home cooked items for a very reasonable fixed price, then I think you'll like Vegera. The restaurant was suggested by folks at the Keramos hotel. The dishes kept coming - 8 or 9 of them. While we were not excited with one or two of them there was plenty with the others. Tasty home cooked food, at a reasonable price with a view of what's going on in the center of the village of Zaros.
