“Huge room in a fantastically renovated convent”
Reviewed May 14, 2013

We never stayed in a room so large as this one. It looked like a double suite, rollerskates are in order here. Small windows but with great views on two sides on a beautiful scenery. A modern bathroom. We slept without hearing a sound at night. This historic building is very large and renovated with wonderful sense of style. Great food in the restaurant. The garden is lovely to sit in (ask for the lounging chairs). Go to the tourist office (officina de turismo) in town, the woman is very well informed and has very interesting maps of the town and neighbourhood available (the hotel has none). She showed us the most interesting route through the village with its rich history. On her advice we took a lovely walk from the old roman bridge along the Tago river (part of a National park) for about 1,5 hour in total (the total walk will cost you about 5,5 hours in the hot sun). We used our car to visit the caldera (man made lake) very nearby where you can see vultures.

Amazing place. Modern amenities in a medieval monastery. I was alone in this grandiose place a few days before Christmas. The staff told me it was low season ... I thought it was more thanks to the Spanish harsh economic times that I got a room in this 5-star hotel for 35 euros ( $50 !). An hotel like this in Paris, London, or New-york would have command 10 x the price!
The walls are very thick, the rooms super quiet, super clean, super comfortable. The window open to a beautiful and quiet countryside.
I was on a long bike trip through Spain, riding that day from Caceres and heading to Portugal. The staff was extremely nice and welcoming, they didn't bother that I left my bike in the middle of their beautiful lobby.
Delicious Estremeno food at dinner and copious breakfast in the morning - important fuel for the coming 80 km cycling day.
If you're around, don't miss that place and if you're in Alcantara don't miss the Roman bridge. (there is a tough climb after it, though)

Room Tip: I had only one room, can't tell about the others

On first arriving, the hotel building took our breath away. The hotel stands alone looking over Alcantara surrounded by fields. As we left the car, the sound of sheep bells could be heard in the distance. After being used as a convent, the building was a factory grinding different types of flour and some of the old machinery is still in place. Rooms are comfortable and cosy with the usual Hospederia standard of finish. The restaurant was stunning and the food of good standard. There are many beautiful buildings to see in the town, as well as the famous Roman bridge.

This was our first visit to this part of Extremadura and we were impressed by the general area but especially by this hotel. It had a strange, almost austere feeling to it which seemed to exude the pride and confidence of old Spain; this was reinforced by immaculate standards of hospitality and service.

We had a suite with balcony together with half board at a really bargain price. The rooms were enormous, really well fitted and the bathroom was, once again, very good. the only small quibble was with the time that it took for hot water to feed through, which I guess was a factor of the building size coupled with the low occupancy at the time.

Breakfasts were very well provided with plenty of everything that might be wanted and staff on hand to supplement this if necessary. The restaurant served an excellent three course dinner of generous proportions of imaginatively presented food, coupled with a quite reasonable wine list.

All in all it was a real pleasure to stay here and I would commend it wholeheartedly.

One tip is to book direct through the hotel's own web site - it is cheaper than the agencies.

Room Tip: Go for a suite and half board - really good value for money.
