“Great place to stay in the Pantanal!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 11, 2012

Stayed in Aguape as part of tour booked at Brazil Nature Tours. Great location with nice terraces including hammocks and outside dining facilities. Excellent fresh food (especially the BBQ and lemon pie :-)). Tours were small and personal and went for additional nighttime jaguar watching (although didn't find it). If you don't speak Portuguese bring an English guide - ask for Alessandra Scherer when booking via Brazil Nature Tours, she is great!

Stayed here for two nights during a tour through the Brazilian Pantanal. The grounds are rustic, but the rooms are large, clean and have air conditioning and modern bathrooms. Plenty of hot water. There is a small library, with television, and internet access in the office area for a small fee. There is a relaxing hammock pavilion and pool next to the open air dining area. Meals are served during regular hours and are quite good. Drinks are extra, you keep a tab and pay on checkout. The staff is very freindly.

Game drives produced sightings of giant anteater, crab eating fox, caimen, rhea, jabiru stork, red-legged siriema, armadillo. At the lodge one can see hyacinth macaw, black-hooded parakeets, Toco toucan, Chaco chachalaca, plush-crested jay, saffron finch, and more.

We are 5 Canadians who booked through Brazil Nature Tours. We were provided with our own private English speaking guide. His name is Rodrigo the Uruguayan, ask for him either through Brazil Nature Tours or through the pousada. He made the difference in our trip. We cannot recommend him enough. He is very professional and well informed about the flora and fauna, and I can really say that confidently since I am a biologist. His energy and enthusiasm was contagious. He went beyond his guide duties. I cannot imagine this trip without him. Rodrigo accompanied us on all our outings in addition to the local guides, so we five with 2 guides to spot animals and birds for us. We saw so many animals and birds, even an anaconda! Thanks to Rodrigo. We felt the locals guides also worked hard at spotting the animals and took their work seriously.

The property is definitely rustic, but very charming and clean. Everyone was very friendly and we felt just like home. The food was excellent. Even our teenagers loved it. Almost no English is spoken at the range, understandably, so having an English speaking guide is a must. No one asked for any tip but we tipped because the service was outstanding from all the staff, from the local guides to the cooks.

I picked this pousada over others because the proximity to the airport. I did not give it a 5 star because the nature of the lodgings which was expected because we were there for the wildlife, not luxury. We would be happy to return here.

We visited Aguapé for 2 days in October 2011. Our experience was somewhat mixed. Positives were the easy access, the friendly and efficient staff, the pousada grounds with lots of shade and hammocks (and many beautiful birds), and the excellent open-air restaurant where you can watch birds, armadillos and foxes during breakfast. The excursions were a bit disappointing. Groups were rather large (10-12 people) and noisy (children can't help that), and it all felt a bit too much like routine. The boat tour on the river felt (and sounded) more like a race between two boats, with quick stops to take a compulsory picture of a bird or a monkey and then full throttle again. During the jeep excursion, cayman, jabiru stork and foxes were fed, and clearly behaved like they are fed every day. Still, there were many beautiful things to see. An easy and nice introduction to the Pantanal, especially for families with young children, but not really recommended for more experienced nature lovers.

Pousada Aguapé is a great place to go!! Some 50 km from Aquidauana, almost 200 km from Campo Grande you are in the mid a very beautiful place. When you do the safari and return to the place in the night, you can see how far it is from the civilization and can appreciate hte isolation, the beautiful of the place.
The trips are very good with very experienced guides (the downside is that they don´t speak english). You can ride horses, go walking or in a boat. Everything you will stay in you memory and you´ll remember for a long time.

In terms of picking a holiday for riding & wildlife viewing (espcially birds), Aguape and its related pousada of Pique couldn't be better. First off, it's a beautiful place where the cows and the animals & birds co-exist in relative harmony, secondly the people from the owners to the cowboys to the barman are charming and courteous. It's not often that you can go riding round a huge farm in the company of the owner! Also, the accomodation is excellent without being over the top and the common areas are very pleasant. It did not take me long to get used to sleeping for an hour or two at midday in a hammock between sorties! I was very pleasantly surprised by the horses which were of a good standard and enjoyable to ride and by the quantity and variety of birds. Of course, sighting mammals is a lot harder, but capibara & both kinds of anteaters were very much in evidence, as were little grey foxes & armadilloes.A truly wonderful experience!

We stayed in three different locations in the north and south Pantanal and this was by far the best as it gave immediate access to the river, wetlands and woodland. The trips out in the safari van and the boat were real highlights with anteater and other exciting sightings.. Good guides. Excellent food and friendly service. Take your Brazilian Portuguese phrase book.
